I'm an average gamer. I like sims and arcade style, too. My favorite games are chopper sims and arcade style games. Apache Longbow, Commanche 4 and DCS Black Shark are some of my favorite games. I also really enjoyed IL2 and HOTP.
Here's the rub with this game. No saves at the checkpoints combined with a short mission timer, no assistance from friendlies and waves and waves and waves of enemy make it impossible to enjoy the gameplay.
I also have a VERY hard time when I try to line up a shot on an enemy formation inbound or even over their target. I get hammered after one or two seconds by some enemy fighter not even visible. I got the red carrot but it goes away as soon as I brake off to hunt him down. I go back to the bombers and immediately I get hammered again.
I like it mostly but it's SO very frustrating for me to play and enjoy it.
At least one of you have echoed these same hiccups while saying you liked the game, so I know it ain't just me saying so.
I think I'm going to be putting this one down for a while until a content patch comes out. Too bad.

I sent the game back to gamefly.com I won't play it again until all the aforementioned bugs are fixed.
I'm using ps3 console I liked the blazing angels series this one though is better in some respects and worse in other.
It could be the best one if these details are corrected.

I enjoy HoE, but I also expected much more. You can almost stop your plane in the air and it does not stall. Last night I crashed a B17 with a Thunderbolt and it just rolled upside down with a bit of fire. IL2 is harder, prettier, and has extra mission packs. Ubisoft and Transmission Games should launch HotP in 1080p and with extra mission packs. It would be better than this unfinished game ...

If you're getting hammered by enemy gunners on bomber formations, you're sitting still for too long. Attack from different angles, or if you're going to sit behind them - don't do it for too long. Energy attacks (diving from above while accelerating) are especially useful for breaking up large formatoins.

Finished the whole game to the end on Rookie mode. Working through it again on Pilot and Ace modes. Its a great game (now that the flight stick is working).
If you're getting hammered regularly, then use a different strategy in your attack. Not surprisingly, flying in a straight line (say, behind an enemy bomber formation) will get you lined up and killed quite quickly ... so don't do that.
Ace kills and Energy Attacks ... use them both ... they make all the difference, especially on Ace mode.
If you get stuck on a Rookie mission, go back to previous missions and do them on Pilot and/or Ace mode to unlock better planes.
Great game.
