After purchasing a whole new PC just to be able to play the xpack, I have installed the origanal CD, downloaded the xpack and installed it. (As a sidenote, with my new system the game runs perfectly and has finally become a WONDERFUL experience, as opposed to the lurch/lag/crash/argghhh! I have become used to...total cost to play the game $4000+ http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_wink.gif )
My question is this: Why is URU.exe connecting me to the internet???? I have to disable Norton just to play and then, of course, I am interupted by spamola, messages, etc. I find this really wierd, and haven't seen anyone else complain, but, I swear, unless I disable Norton, I get a message telling me that URU.EXE is attempting to access the internet. What gives?
And all the rest is silence...

Whilst I don't know why URU still tries to connect, URU will play ok if you block the connection.

My firewall constantly threw me out of Uru asking me if I wanted to let Uru.exe connect until I finally blocked it. Somewhere around here there is a thread in which people discussed this in greater detail though.

Uru.exe -> impossible
UruExplorer.exe -> yes, loopback connection..
UruSetup.exe -> yes, loopback connection.
Well, in an older post, someone posted the ip address where uru was connecting to, and the ip address was property of microsoft corporation, being that connection a new feature of Diretx done my M$ for some unkonwn purposes that are against the end-user privacy.
I can asure you, that Uru doesn't do any connection to Internet. Some firewalls, detect the port that Uru is opening, but nothing else. Also, to avoid possible attacks against this open port, the solution is to use a firewall.
Block these connections and that's all, all should be working well.
If you see a destination ip address where Uru is trying to connect, then check the owner of the ip address.

it's Uru making calls to your browser for checking system settings. A little bit leftover from Live/Prologue/etc.
Most likely you have "Automatically assign proxy" or something like that set. Since Uru calls through IE for its web information, IE proceeds to connect to the Internet in order to determine your proxy information.
Since Uru is initiating the call to IE, well norton complains about Uru.

Thanks for your info guys...interesting and helpful.
Of course, to those of us for whom the glass is half full (wait, now I'm confused...wouldn't a pessimist say that it's only half full...compeletely full being the better option...and wouldn't an optimist see that at least it's not as empty as it might be...)
Okay, I mean to those of us to whom hope springs eternal, I thought perhaps this meant that some vestiges of connectivity were left just in case...you know..just in case...

It's a year and a half later, and the problem re-emerges. Whenever I start up Uru: CC, it attempts to make a network connection,
A couple of replies in this string suggest that I block the connections. I will, as soon as someone explains how.
Thanks.

I did have the same problem with some Ubisoft games and solved it by doing a spyware scan + removal. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/59.gif

nhstagehand,
Questions:
1. Do you have a hardware firewall? If so, what manufacturer and exact model number.
2. Do you have a software firewall? If so, what software and exact version number.
1. Do you have antivirus software? If so, what software and exact version number.

No hardware firewall.
Yes. Microsoft Firewall (I'm running WXP Home, SP2)
Yes. Norton Antivirus 2005 V. 11.0.16

Norton Antivirus uses a set of rules to monitor and handle all traffic and applications. If the default protection isn't appropriate, you can add, modify, or remove rules using the Rules Wizard. (Look through Antivirus Help for details.) This may or may not solve the problem.
IMHO, the Win XP SP2 built-in firewall is much more trouble than it's worth. I recommend turning it off and installing a good commercial software firewall.
Take a look at Zone Alarm Pro (http://www.zonelabs.com/store/content/catalog/products/sku_list_zap.jsp?dc=12bms&ctry=US&lang=en). There's also a free version of Zone Alarm (http://www.zonelabs.com/store/content/catalog/products/sku_list_za.jsp?dc=12bms&ctry=US&lang=en&lid=dbtopnav_pro). A comparison of features and with appropriate links is available here (http://www.zonelabs.com/store/content/company/products/znalm/comparison.jsp?dc=12bms&ctry=US&lang=en&lid=ho_za). Zone alarm allows easily and completely blocking any program's access to the Internet with a few mouse clicks.

The Norton software was not a problem.
Per your suggestion, I disabled the Windows Firewall, downloaded and installed ZoneAlarm's freeware firewall, followed the easy-to-understand interface, and disabled Internet access on UruExplorer.
Everything is working as it should.
Many thanks, Heimdall.
