got to admit i downloaded it but it wont run on my older version of windows media player...am a bit dubiuos about up-dating media player as it might install directx9 at the same time(?) and my old VooDoo 3DFX graphics card probably won't like directx9 one little bit..

an urgent case of upgrading will be in order to even think about running SH3...For the the pair of us.

http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_smile.gif yup most likely..mind yu i'm stumped as to what the best options are...i held of buying a new graphics card becuase i was hoping they'd stop bringing out new ones evry 3 months and i could just stroll up buy the most recent an stroll out knowing i had the required bit of kit...some hope of that !!!

and well now it's more a case of it's probably cheaper to just plain buy a brand new pc..he! he! even my local supermarket store sells PC's for very little money that wipe the floor stats wise with my old machine..every time i decide to upgrade and start looking at the options i end up shrugging my shoulders and saying "next year then.." 'ain't got a clue what to do!! http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/images/smiley/53.gif

Graphics cards is a huge niche market, and despite pop' belief, it is the card that powers the software. (Game or 3D intensive wise)

But! all u really need is to upgrade the motherboard, to take a bigger CPU, with the latest DDR RAM, and an AGP slot for a graphics card. Then u can just buy a gen or 2 lower than whats out, and upgrade as and when u need to.

i need a new cd rom drive at the same time..am using an external drive as the in-built one died a long time ago...that plus ram and a high spec graphics card puts it all about the same price as the cheapest complete PC...the voodoo 5500 i have is a 64mb card so no point replacing that with another 64mb card..i dunno something about the whole process makes me vaguely suspiciuos..aint nothing happening in modern games that can't be seen albiet in a slightly more primitive form (except the AI of course) in the original half life http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/images/smiley/52.gif

Sorry to say, there is no longer any driver support for voodoo cards, im using a GF2 MX400 and that 64MB's, and it still poors on Voodoo.

Im building a new machine, but with a recent house move, and re-decorating takes a higher priority over a PC, its gonna take a lil' time, but im hoping to have it built intime for SH3.

The 5500 was really a nice card for a long time... ppl reported it could beat GF256 and 2MX cards, if there was a Glide renderer IIRC.
But today, Glide is antique, and you won't get much out of that DX7 card (or was it wven DX6?). It lacks things like T&L and Pixel / Vertex Shaders badly to render SH3 graphics. It was great for a long time because real T&L games were first available in numbers when the GF3 was out already. I had gotten a 2MX shortly before the 3 came out and until I got my GF 3 Ti200 I had less than 3 games that used T&L - the 5500 would have been the better card for most games over the 2MX, and I first wanted to buy that one, as it was really a bargain at that time http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/images/smiley/16x16_smiley-happy.gif. And those 64MB were VERY much back then. The 4 chip 6000 even had 128MB, a very rare card. Standard cards had 32MB at that time, just the Ultras of the GF2 series had 64MB. Memory doesn't tell much about the actual performance. The Voodoo needed it for all that FSAA stuff and so. I've got a Radeon 9800 with "just" 128MB, and it's fast enough. The 9800 Pro is some 200 Euros right now, beeing the 2nd best ATI card you can get. The best is the 9800XT, it's "just" clocked higher (of course with better prodution quality to maintain the higher clockage).

You definately need to upgrade your rig then http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif. But I'd wait until there are some specs or when it's out. Get something with good bang for the buck, a 2,5-3,2GHz or so, 512-1024MB of DDR RAM and a 9800 series graphics card. That should be enough for SH3, if it's not too hungry http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/images/smiley/16x16_smiley-happy.gif

yes i am going to wait a while before i do anything too drastic..i get enthusiastic about new games but as i slowly realise that im unlikely to be able to run them without up-grading the old voodoo i start heading into a cynical stage.. http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/images/smiley/blink.gif as i dont have too many games on my PC and don't usualy buy very many..as time has gone by this has become more pronounced simply because the games i do enjoy are extremely difficult to set up and run on the newer cards (and are virtually impossible to run glitch free on windows XP), so it starts to be more than just an up-grade to get the best out of a new game and ends up being a case of do i really want to swop the use of two or three of my favourite tried and trusted games for the use of one brand new game of unknown quality?

do i want to swop the ability to play
Red Baron 3d
CAOTD
and possibly even SH2
for the ability to play SH3
(not to mention the cost of both the game and the up-grades, going to be a mighty expensive game in more ways than one!!)
still if it's half as good as it promises to be i'll probably plump up the money and be done with it...still not that impressed by the graphics tho i must admit..but early days

but it's still a bit of a pain in the neck http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/images/smiley/35.gif http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/images/smiley/16x16_smiley-mad.gif

mind yu the specs so far only mention the need for a directx8 compatible card..the old Voodoo 5500 can live with directx8.1 so its just about on the score board..and ive been running games with higher specs required than my PC's ability with no problems at all..combat flight simulator 2 shouldnt have run on my pc, but it ran perfectly well even with a sky full of planes.. and that with only 64 mb of ram !
so it can be done

what i will be buying the game for will ultimately be the interior of the sub and the 3d crew members and management stuff...the main weakness with the older games is that yu are blocked out of the feeling that yu are in a submarine by the lack of thought applied to the interior interfaces..they give yu the controls needed to control the sub but don't leave yu with any sense of being inside the thing..yur just not on-board the submarine yur commanding it from some ghostly place as if by remote control..it's like playing tomb raider entirely from a top down map screen , so if it manages that and it sounds like it has done this then it will be great fun all round..he!! he!! LOL i dunno... http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/images/smiley/16x16_smiley-very-happy.gif
