For you Myst buffs out there, those that catch things like the prison age discontinuities: do you need to have gone to outside sources of information (e.g. the books) for that, or is there enough info in the games to catch things like that? Because I've only played the games, and it's making me feel like i should be paying more attention.

Different does not mean better or worse. It just means NOT THE SAME.

Well, if you want to find contradictions, the more lore the better. Familiarize yourself with all the books, all the text in all the games, and everything RAWA and Rand have ever said in public! And don't forget the comics! http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_wink.gif

If you're just trying to follow the basic storyline, the games should be enough.

The books are worth reading for anybody that's interested, though they aren't the best-written fiction I've ever encountered http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_wink.gif

No, seriously, you can forget the comics... at least from a storytelling and historical standpoint.

Well, there's a difference between an unintended or necessary contradiction and just being flat out wrong... http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_wink.gif

What do you mean? The comics didn't have any contradictions - they revealed a piece of the puzzle I've been waiting for a long time to hear.

How long have you guys known about this? I just read them the other day when someone posted.

Just a short list, since I'm on my way to work, but here's a few errors/contradictions from the comics:

1) Atrus' prison on K'veer does not have a window. Nor it it on Myst Island.
2) Anna was not Atrus' mother.
3) Catherine does not, despite the proclamation by Strong Bad, have to have blue hair.
4) Neither does Achenar, for that matter.
5) Kerath's Arch (as taken from the erroneous sketch from BoA, but that's a different point) was not, as pictured in the comics, 20 feet tall.
6) The D'ni did not first learn of Linking Books in D'ni (nor were they the D'ni at the time), which kind of invalidates the pretense of the fable DarkHorse concocted.
7) Linking Books are not illustrated manuscripts as pictured in Myst #0
8) Sirrus is not the simpering stupid brother.
9) Achenar is not the clever, calculating, plotting, conniving brother either.
10) Veovis was not a rebel in the sense intended by the comics.
11) Catherine is not (despite apparent regular attempts at this) a simpering housewife.

Alahmat, haven't we already had this conversation? I think you copied and pasted that list http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_smile.gif. Well here was my response last time:
