I dont understand this

Ok guys, Im using Windows XP and have had no problems joining or hosting games until I set up my home network. I now cannot join a game, actually I can join, however, if the game is being played I get to the client join screen and it stops there and kicks me out after 30 secs or so. If the game is in the joining phase I get to the "Downloading data from server" screen and it never goes away. I have tried with the firewall ( XP`s ICF ) on and off and with the network disabled as well. I have tried both internal and external IP addresses. What am I forgetting? Please help me! Anybody?

what type of network switch (or hub) do you have?

The hub is made by linksys. It is not a router or switch it is just a workgroup hub.

Is this a problem when you join a server/host via Internet or on your home network, or both?

Edit: disregard this question - overlooked you tried with network disabled so the problem is on Internet connection or your PC's cannot find out which one is in control of the gateway.

You may try to assign static internal IP's like 192.168.1.101 and 192.168.1.102.

Will check for other options.

I dont know if this is a related problem or not, but since i have not been able to connect to a multiplayer server, I tried to play single player mode today and the game would either freeze after a few moments into the mission, lock up completely requiring a reboot, or it would reboot on its own. I have uninstalled and reinstalled and have gone as far as reformatting and reinstalling everything, XP is an upgrade installation, if that matters. Thanks in advance you guys for your help.

Does your network otherwise function OK? i.e. can you share files, possibly play other games on the LAN?

How is your internet connection working apart from joining GR servers? When you use a hub, you typically need either a router or a second IP to have it work correctly. Or maybe set up internet connection sharing.

Since you use a hub, take it you have a modem (no router) to connect to the Internet?

An XP upgrade is not optimal but shouldn't be the reason of your problem. Do you use the same drivers as you did before the format?

Yes, the network functions flawlessly apart from GR, File and printer both work. My internet also works for entire network, Cable modem using Internet Connection Sharing. My drivers are the latest XP drivers I have found for the hardware I have, and please ask all the questions you like, I love this game and want to play again.

2 shots:

1) upgrade to directX 9.0a or 9.0b

2) if that does not help, try an older nvidia driver, either 3X.xx or 40.72.

For the GeForce 2 you may even try the 29.xx version.

It has shown that "newer is not always better" with these drivers.

I tried all of your suggestions, but still have same problem. Game still freezes up. I tried 29 series 30 series and older 40 series drivers with dx8 and 9.0b.

This is a difficult one, Nick.
Your PC config seems to be OK, drivers and all since everything else except GR runs fine.
Do you have the game installed on the other PC and if so, does it behave in the same way?

So question is if it's the installation of the game or a resource/memory item. Your dxdiag doesn't show anything about your swapfile/pagefile.

"start>run" type "msconfig" (no quotes) and see which programs start up with windows. Uncheck all except for anything like "systray" or "sstray" and anything concerning your antivirus.

When rightclick "My computer"> properties>Advanced>performance
click "settings" and check "Adjust for best performance".

I admit these are shots in the dark, yet worth a try.

Finally can you re-post a full dxdiag?

I tried your latest round of suggestions, alas no change, however i did notice some spurious video behavior in the team selection screen while doing so. This led me to change the video card to a slightly older model I had lying around here, yeah I know, Older than a GF 2? Anyway, this seems to have fixed my problem, as I was able to finish a single player mission, and join and play in multiplayer. Thanks again for all of your help. GreyHaired, you rock.
