FAR CRY: Two Huge Thumbs Down

[FAR CRY SUCKS]

I've been watching the board for a month after trading a game in toward Far Cry. After reading PC Gamer's 95% hurrah, then CGW 3.5 smack down, I figured I might as well wait for patch 1.2 to fix whatever problems plagued what must be an excellent game.

So I go to play the single player on 1.2 and it is unplayable. I have an Alienware 2.8 laptop with a nVidia 5600 Go card, all new drivers, and even the beta of Directx 9.0c. Everything runs great on this computer - except Far Cry. This game won't run worth anything on the 1024*768 setting and has to be put down to 800*600 just to run - and it still runs poorly. Then I have to turn the shadows and dynamic lighting down to LOW... and the framerate still renders it nearly unplayable. Worse, with these settings the game looks awful. For indoor areas the game is purely coaster material. I then rolled back to version 1.1 and still couldn't play because of the framerates.

So fine, I might get the game to run when it looked horrible - that didn't stop me from playing Deus Ex and having it be one of my favorite games. So I start to play... hmm I get to drive around a boat and car... that's pretty cool. But then I realize that there is no quicksave and one moron shoots me through some bushes when I can't see him and I have to play the same thing over again. Yawn.

Worst of all the games presentation of the story is god awful. The voice acting seems to be ripped out of No One Lives Forever - just this time it's not supposed to be funny. Also why does the main character talk to himself - we know what we have to do... shut up!

If I could return Far Cry, I would. I don't blame UbiSoft for this debacle. The Splinter Cell games, though not always as polished as possibe, are fun and run very well on my pc. However, Crytec as evident from this game, is an average to poor developer with a pretty engine that won't work. I hope no developer is stupid enough to use this engine unless they completely overhaul it.

Far Cry was supposed to be the big game of the summer for me, but now that Doom III is coming out... buh bye. In fact, I think I'll boot up Deus Ex and revel in the GOOD game design.

Shame on you PC Gamer.

I would suggest to my buddies here on the Far Cry board not to respond to this person who is obviously a troll. One post, a username designed to inflame and who has not read the part in the manual that says "laptop graphics cards not fully supported". Please ignore him and end this thread here.

You're just asking for trouble there. I would not use a beta version of anything made by Microsoft, you're lucky your computer works at all. Install 9.0b and try it again and please spare us your BS, we had too much of it already. I don't even want to know what you are trying to prove with a name such as "FAR CRY SUCKS". Alienware advertises with Far Cry for its laptop, and frankly Alienware knows how to make computers. Crytex doesn't seem to know how to program for them is the strange thing.

I'm sorry to hear you don't like it, it's probably my all-time favorite game. As for the system required to run it, yes you need something very decent. I have a 4600 (a bit faster than your 5600), about 2 years old, and can barely run Far Cry in 10x7. I use very high settings for the image quality, but if playing MP I'd have to lower them for higher framerates. No aa/af, obviously. The 5600 is more of a value card than a performance one, but you can't exactly throw a 9800 in a laptop... Increasing demands on systems are a part of the advancemetn of the industry. Complaining about it is absurd; should we, by that logic, all still be playing Doom2 in 320x200? http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_razz.gif

Your complaint about being shot is ridiculous; should the mercenaries stand there and let you attack them without retaliating? That would be disgustingly un-fun. Grow a callus or two, you don't play FPS's and not ever die.

The story isn't supposed to be a cinematic masterpiece; its sum total is no more than 5 minutes worth of your time. If you want a masterfully acted film, I suggest buying or renting some DVDs.

The only complaint I have, which you haven't even touched on (how much have you really played the game? http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_wink.gif) is the fair amount of bugginess. It's nothing like EverQuest (if you can even LOAD that game, consider yourself lucky - and it's $13 a month - and that's Sony's fault, not Ubisoft), it can be annoying. For instance I just got to the point where you see Val for the second time and the script hangs for me at that point in the game. The first time around it worked flawlessly, but for some reason now it hangs. I also have to reboot before playing if I've already played and quit, otherwise I get sound issues. However, Crytek certainly isn't grinning evilly, enjoying their customers' frustration. They're working on the issues that the game has, and that's about all you can ask of them.

Overall this is one of the best games I've ever played. Take it as you will. It's not perfect, but then, nothing is.

Thanks for the constructive comment - and I do understand that my graphics card isn't the fastest. However, when a game is unplayable... there is a problem.

The shooting through the bushes is in regards to the level of frustration on a high difficulty of having to play the same level all over again just so you can know where exactly everyone is so you can beat it - that isn't fun.

To save manually you can open the console by hitting the ` key and typing "\save_game" (without the quotes). ALternatively you can follow the instructions in this thread:

which will enable you to save by simply hitting f9 (or whatever key of your choosing).

What are the specs on your Alienware laptop? I have an alienware computer as well and I know that they offer a huge amount of customization options. The 2.8 is the lowest offering that they have right now. Just because the parts are new doesn't mean they are totally up to date. I bought the best available at the time and 2 weeks later they were not the most up to date.

I am not saying that your system isn't up to date. I am just curious as to what your specs are?

well the gameplay still sucks...even on high end machines.
they removed the download link for the patch not for nothing. it was tested they said, yep on 1 macine in the office.
no, no more ubisoft games for me.
after installing the 1.2 patch, the pings were higher, shooting long distances with pistol was easy.(made me feel like playing CS again with cheaters)
i'll kick the box of far cry in the corner and wait for doom 3 or HL 2. (hell we have been waiting now for 4 years i could wait a litlle longer)
