Hey everyone, I have a few questions for you guys here at the forums. I have been a hardcore Socom fan since the day it came out. I have beta tested Socom II and own socom II. I have been playing the Socom for over a year & 1/2 now. But since the game has no support at all and has turned into lag fest im going to be buying an X-box and xbox live this weekend, along with Rainbow Six 3. I have also read ING's preview of Rainbow Six 3 for the PS2, and it stated that online support went down from 8 on 8 to 3 on 3, so i will most likely not get that cuz of the loss of playing in 8 on 8 clan wars. So I was wondering how the lag is online(if any)and how much support the game gets(such as patches)? Also how is the gameplay, is it like Rainbow Six 3 Raven-Shield? One finally question for those of you here who own both rainbow six 3 for Xbox and socom II, which one is funner and how do they compare?

I am not going to lie to you about this, and am going to be straight foward. I am a hardcore Xbox fan, I don't like the PS2 for various reasons, and am considering trading it in for some store credit. I will give the PS2 a chance but it just has nothing at the moment or for a while that interests me. So take anything I say as you will, I will try to be fair in what I give as an opinion though.
I like RS3, I like it alot. I played Socom 2 for about 4 hours once and wasn't impressed. Now some people say that isn't enough time to get an accurate opinion, but I feel it is. I do the same with reading a book if within the first few chapters it doesn't intrigue me I'm not going to go on. Playing a game is the same. It didn't intrigue me. I own Socom 1 and used to play it all the time. Then XBL released and I haven't played Socom 1 or PS2 since that date. Believe it or not. Now you know why I want to trade it in. I don't even use it as a DVD player.
As for XBL support I have heard both good and bad. Personally though I have never had to use it. I am pretty much opposite of you. I am a hardcore RS3 guy and was an XBL Beta back in the day. Before RS3 it was GR. RS3 I feel has good support. There are many on this board that may disagree. Some will say we are not getting maps quick enough or patches quick enough. I say they are coming in time, and they are coming in a timely fashion. We've already had 1 patch and 2 maps released since RS3's release in November. It is an excellent game in IMO for clans, thier could be some changes but every game could use some changes for different things.
As for lag. Some rooms have it, some don't. I can do a non-dedictated room with 12 with no lag. I can do 14 non-dedicated with minimal, and I have never tried 16. I have been in rooms with only 8 that have lagged. So it depends on who's on your friends list and/or what game you get matched into. That is one thing I will tell you know I favor about Socom than RS3. Is back in the day, ( I am unsure about Socom 2 ), you could choose the room you wanted to join from a list. If I am not mistaken in that list the host could also give a quick description of the game. RS3 doesn't have that option and I really wish it did. That is one of the main reasons I host a lot, just because it is a ***** sometimes to get a quick match or opti match.
Those are all my opinions, so I hope they help you in your choice. See you online if that is your choice.

Socom is a good game but it can not be compared to rainbow six 3 mostly because it is no where near the same type of game. However rainbow six 3 is a great game. My personal opinion is that saleing your ps2 and getting an xbox is the best thing to do. Not just for online play but for the system itself too. There is no game out that is online play for xbox that is like socom but Full Spectrum Warrior will be out in a couple months and it is suppose to be just like socom but with alot better graphics. What i suggest you do is check up on Full Spectrum Warrior and if you like what you see and hear then get the xbox. That is if you are buying the xbox just for a game like socom. Now if you just want the best online play you can get then dont bother reading any more go out and get that xbox. If you dont allready know you have to buy an Xbox Live Starter Kit for $70 to play online and have a high speed connection no dialup. You dont have to buy the starer kit to play online you can just get the 12 month card that will alow you to play online for 1 year but you get no headset. With the starter kit you get Mechassault, Headset and 1 year of xbox live. With the online play you can also get downloadable content (If the game supports it). I dont know if i sayed anything that you allready know or not i just typed what you should know.

As has been previously stated, the lag depends on the person who is hosting. The XBox and Live work person to person. However, Ubi and MS have made some rooms with 12 or 16 max players. Thanks to them.
As you have asked, I once owned Socom and a PS2, I sold it to buy an XBox and Live, plus Ghost Recon. I fell in love instantly. You might know me if you have played that long, or have seen me around. Socom name was.. /R\-U Schizo? or Schizo_METHOD. Anywho, the cheating became huge as you have known and it ruined the only game that worked on my PS2.
Rainbow Six 3 came out, and I was excited due to the fact I loved the PC versions of the game, and do not own an up to date computer, so couldn't play the newest. However, I have heard that the reticule has been changed and some of the features as well. Again, however, people have said that it's a decent game in comparison, they just wish it had SOME of the features. As for the cheating, you can read on here that UBI and MS are well aware of it, and have/are working on patches to fix these as promptly as they can.
Socom II, I have heard, do not actually know, that it lost it's flavor with adding too much. When Socom was out, people were always playing that and didn't really care, but complained about the lag issue during the xmas rush. People are complaining HIGHLY about the lag on Socom II and that it had lost its... flare. So with that said, I would say Rainbow Six 3 is better. However I like it better than Socom, pre-codebreaker era.

I have personally never played Socom. I play a lot of R63 though and can tell you it is a great game. I am not much of a fan of FPS games but Halo, Ghost Recon, and RS3 are amazing. Rainbow has a much more tactical feel than most Quake or unreal type games. If you get in a match with some good friends it can become pretty intense. There are tons of weapons and equipment that make strategy a must for this game. I play a little bit of Team Survival which is the team player vs. player mode. But mostly I play Terrosist Hunt quit a bit and that is where you and up to three others take on many terrorists in much larger levels than team survival. The AI is good on the higher difficulty settings and the game makes U use stealth when dealing with the computer. The AI is not as good as Halo but what is?
I traded my PS2 in because at the time almost no games supported High Definition and the games looked like crap on my HDTV. This may have changed though by now and I am going to get a ps2 again. But I would still highly recommend RS3 and Xbox live in general.

The SOCOM series is ok. I still own a PS2, and both SOCOM games. While they are good games in my opinion, Rainbow 6 III blows them both away for several reasons. Other than the obvious -graphics, sounds, etc, the fact that it's an FPS is the biggest factor. I like FPS games much better than 3rd person. Really it boils down to which type of game you like better -1st, or 3rd person. The lag issue has been covered well. I myself have played on Gandalf's servers, and they are top notch.
I saw a mention about Full Spectrum Warrior. Now, not to be mislead, but isn't that a stregy type game where you control your entire squad rather than individual characters? Just curious.

From what i understand you control one character and you can switch characters if you want to. I could be wrong though.

Full Spectrum is Full Squad control, you as the player never fire your weapon. You tell your team what to do. It was designed to teach military officers how to command a squad.

Well i guess i will just wait and see what everyone says after it is released. If you are right then the game is going to suck. Then again the online play should be like socom and allow you to shoot. I am buying the game for online play mainly anyway.

I have played socom2 and i must say it is,IMHO,a pile of steaming dogsh@# compared to any game on xbox. That includes Britneys Dance Beat. I dont know why PS is selling any systems anymore, but i laugh my *** off when PS ppl say, "there is way more games on PS2"

okey, first of all I don't own a Xbox. So my conclusion is based on the r6 3 for the ps2 (demo).
I am a beta tester for sony, so i've played both socom and socom 2. In the beginning I was really crazy about socom and socom 2. But i started to hate al the ****ing personnens with cleymores, mines and ****, then you have the third person view that really makes me crazy, because someone can see you at an corner and I can't see him because of the Third person ****.
Then R6 3. I like First person shooters more then third, that's enough for me to like this game more then socom 1 or 2. Then you have the really amazing grphx (yes also on ps2) and the úber beautiful guns.
I havent played r6 3 online yet, but I soon will!!
So I choose R6 3 only based on the demo.
I only think that i won't play r6 3 for months because you only have elimination game modes without a goal........and that sux.
owyeah one thing, can someone tell me how many users are online AT THE SAME TIME??
With Socom 1 In europe that is most of the time around 3000 users. And there are over 50 000 auccounts...... i don;t know how many people play in the US, but these are the numbers of socom and i'm curious about r63

Never played Socom (I or II) as I don't have a PS. I also won't play RS3 online as I feel the MP version has completely lost the focus of counter-terror/hostage rescue and turned into a glorified deathmatch. However, the single player version is pretty sweet. It has a few shortcomings, of course, and I thoroughly dislike the lack of the classic planning stage (and particularly the inability to arm your team as you see fit). Also, much of the game is very linear in the routes you can take and there aren't a lot of suprises (rushing into a large, seemingly empty room is usually a bad idea). However, as you watch how your team takes positions to cover every likely avenue of approach when you stop, or how they stack at a door to ready for entry, or see a tango come flailing out of a hole, engulfed in flames, after you Willie Peter'd the room, the game becomes a thing of beauty.
CooledPlaque, Full Spectrum probably WILL suck for a great many gamers out there. However, it's a VERY close second to Pandora Tomorrow on my list to buy, and that could just be because it's released about 3 months later. I was of the opinion as you that not being able to control an individual's weapon would be boring, but after looking at it further, it's really become more clear to me. Backing you out of the single player control takes the game into a whole new dimension that no (or few?) games get into. It will actually allow you more control over the big picture, in my opinion. You no longer become attatched to one soldier and can use the rest as cannon fodder (some call it "recon" http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif ), but feel personally responsible for the well-being of every member as each one lives or dies as a direct result of your sense of command. Then again, any game that can incorporate more strategy is good by me (RS3 for xbox really let me down in the strategy department as I had fallen in love with the mission planning stage of the previous PC versions'). Check out the video clip about it on their website (or check gamespot). The project lead or whoever narrates it is kind of corny, but the video is sweet. I particularly like the chunks of buildings getting blown off and the blood spray from a head wound right in front of the camera.

Full Spectrum Warrior is only going to be co-op online, 2 players. One controls Alpha Squadron, and the other controls Bravo Squadron. You have your CO, Grenadier, rifleman, and assault rifleman. It's more tactical positioning, kinda like a glorified chess. If you wish to learn more on this game, goto fullspectrumwarrior.com. Sorry UBI for the advertisement here. Rainbow Six 3 is still IMO better than most out right now, for tactical shooters.
