All time favorite war game would be:
Rome: Total War (i've only played the demo, but it's so totally amazing!!)
But favorite War shooter would be:
Medal Of Honor 1 for the Ps1, It was just sooooo unique when it came out, one of the first WW II fps', it also pretty much created the WWII FPS genre

-War doesn't determine who's right, just who's left
iv played all those games iv listed and more and heres my opinion
RTCW - ok but got tedious
MOHAA - great game i thought
COD - hmmmm overhyped IMHO

CAll of Duty! No dobuts...single player was sooo immersive, and the multiplayer was soo fun and user easy. Thats why i'm in 5 tournies for cod http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif
The COD should be the standard for brothers in arms to surpace if they want to succeede.

What I look for in a war-game is realism, freedom, great AI and atmosphere.
OFP has it all and its allmost the only game that has it all. H&D2 comes in on a good 2nd.
The rest is okay but always arcade'ish in one or more ways.
I'm hoping Brothers in arms will step up and try to be different (reallistic), but I doubt it.

op flashpoint is realistic but the 1 shot=dead from 5 miles away really jarred me,also the war was made up and i just couldnt get my head around a false war, saying that though its definetly the best modern day war game ever but IMHO H&D2 does it so much better, well WW2 anyway

IMO AAO is a disgrace to realistic military shooters, especially with the dumb honor-system.

Well, I like war games but I'm not into arcade games. They don't have to be completely realistic but I don't like [what I consider] brainless running and gunning **** (ie. MoH, CoD).
OFP is my all-time favourite. I still play after all these years. It has some major flaws in gameplay that can turn many away though. Not bad for a first attempt from BIS in the ground-breaking sense! Let's hope OFP2 rocks.
H&D2 is a great compromise between realism/strategy and traditional shooters. The scripting is a little too heavy in places, but more in an interesting way than an annoying one.
I enjoyed GR back in its time. If you count flight sims, I'm still enjoying IL-2. I liked Vietcong... it was a little too arcade-like for me in many respects and you spent way too much time in tunnels. They tried at least and succeeded in places.

Man, I guess it depends on the definition of 'fanboy'. If you're simply point out my fandom, then yes I am a fan. Yep! Yep! Yep! http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif
If you mean it in the usual sense in which it is bandied about the Internet then I'll be honest with you and say I've always thought 'fanboy' to be one of the most stupid terms ever created that people turn to when they find themselves unable to piece together a coherent post/argument of any sort.
Although said term and the latter meaning does occasionally fit a small minority of people who accept no compromise in opinion.

Greatest war game, has to be Empire the original war game for a computer, look it up.
Very addicting, ran on VAX, and some other mainframes, it came out on the pc DOS based, wish someone would update it for XP.

AA: SF is the best for me, not only for the freedom in it (eg: bipods, jams, afv's and vehicles(coming this fall)...), but also because its run by the US army, which gives me a feeling more accurate military gameplay, and its 100% free to download and upgrade when new versions are released

Hands down the best war themed shooter out there is Call of Duty + United Offensive expansion pack. No shooter out there can match its sheer intensity and battlefield authenticity.
S.W.A.T. 3 - Close Quarters Battle is also an excellent military shooter (even though SWAT is a civilian force). I have yet to see an AI mechanism as good as the one in SWAT 3.
Medal of Honor - Allied Assault and its expansions were fun as hell. They weren't exactly realistic and the game was heavily scripted, but regardless, as a whole WWII experience it was great.
Return to Castle Wolfenstein was a good shooter in itself, but you can't really call it a WWII shooter. Correct me if I'm wrong about this, but I'm sure I haven't seen any zombies and skeletons in any WWII material I have ever read or seen. Besides, calling RTCW a WWII shooter is like calling No One Lives Forever a Cold War shooter. Simply no such thing.
I also very much enjoyed Rainbow Six 3 - Raven Shield which was a great effort in the Tactical Shooter genre. Not nearly as good as SWAT 3 but still very enjoyable and realistic.
The 2 Deadly Dozen games were also enjoyable. While it was obvious that they were budget titles, they have to be some of the most enjoyable ones as well.
Operation Flashpoint was boring as hell. While the game was pretty realistic and versatile, it's obvious that the developers forgot about something called the "fun factor". Plus, the game moved in such a slow pace, you almost feel you're in bullet-time mode.
Battlefield 1942 and Battlefield Vietnam were both highly enjoyable war themed shooters. These have the ultimate war themed MP experience out there.
The Rainbow Six and Ghost Recon games from Redstorm are all nice games, nothing to call home about though.
The Hidden & Dangerous games were pretty intense, especially the 2nd one. The lack of high production values is however evident. It's not much of an epic shooter, but more of a tactical shooter set in a WWII environment.
America's Army was a pretty mediocre MP shooter. but it was free so what the heck...
Here are some good military shooters to wait for:
1. Brothers in Arms (WWII)
2. Medal of Honor - Pacific Assault (WWII)
3. Men of Valor (Vietnam)
4. SWAT 4 (no idea when that one is coming out) (Urban)
5. Ghost Recon 2 (Balkans?)
6. Operation Flashpoint 2 (they better make it enjoyable this time around) (Eastern Europe?)
7. Call of Duty 2 (was announced very lately) (WWII)

what he said
of course H&D2 is a tactical WW2 shoooting game ,thats what i love about it but you can go run n gunning also and i find it more exciting than COD or MOH..the game is "do what you like,go where you want to go,do the mission how you want to".COD UO does not offer that but is a gun run on rails

OP FLASHPOINT
was great , still play it now and again!
In one of the 1st missions you are stranded in a forest, and you are sitting there listening as patrols moved around you! It really did give you a sense of fear, it did me as I tried to get out under the cover of a fogbank and keeping low so I wouldn't get caught.. Its the only game that gave me that sense of atmosphere while playing a game..
the 1 shot and your dead also added to it, ( the right shot of course ) though you could bleed to death if not treated..
I hope BIA has the one shot and your dead, I hate these 15/20 bullet hit and your still going! I play the demo for Pacific Assult and to me it was a joke..I must have been hit god knows how many times and as long as I called the media over before I passed away I got back up and ready to charge on..
Can anyone tell me, is it 1 shot and your dead in BIA ( the right shot of course ).

Here is my list
1. Call of duty series
2. Operation of flashpoint series
3. Day of defeat
4. Hidden and Dangerous series
5. Medal of honour series (but the expansion "Breakthrough" was so disappointed)
I hope BIA can be on the top after it is released.

The greatest war game ever is Operation Flashpoint. The fully integrated in game mission editor has kept that puppy alive. I still design total battlefield missions in that thing even today.

Red Orchestra is by far the most realistic WW2 FPS game ever made. I hope BIA can top this.

Red Orchestra because of the realism(Iron sights especially)and Eastern Front setting.
IL-2 Forgotten Battles for much the same reason.

I'm going to have to say the best MP war game ever has got to say DoD, even if it is a mod, it's still really great, I'm in a guild in DoD called the 907th, where we have a little over 200 members and 6 companies (A-F) and a recruitment company and a reserves company, and it is just loads of fun http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif
Best single player war game has to be either OFP, OFP Resitance, RTW, or CoD, they are all just tons of fun.

Ghost Recon & Hidden & Dangerous 2, and Sabre Squadron. Coming in 2005 - Ghost Recon 2, Brothers In Arms and Close Combat First To Fight.
iv added op/flashpoint to my sig as its the best set in modern times war game,no other game comes close in its reality or ambition but for accesability H&D2 is still the king, just luv it soooooooooooooooooo long........ http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-wink.gif

definately WW2OL. most of the others listed are childsplay.
i hope your not refering to HD2 as child play.......its very realistic,of course if you mean COD/MOHAA then yes i agree to the point those games are almost insulting to those who fought/died in WW2

Day of Defeat.
CoD and Mohaa are one of the same thing...Absolute ****...Same with BF1942.
If Bro in Arms developers want the MP to succeed hopefully the will take a lesson from both CoD and MoH series. They are both unrealistic and have poor gameply.
agreed........ http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/784.gif

I would have to say a simulation called Aces High 2. Made by Hitech Creations Inc. Its a WWII Aircombat simulation. 750 people per server. Very fun indeed. However the realism part is lacking.
FPS Wise, I would have to say that Mohaa for the PC was my all time favorite.
I am currently playing Call of Duty, Call of Duty: United Offensive, Aces High 2, and Counter-Strike. I believe this game will be the favorite of many.
im flabergasted that IL2 hasnt been mentioned, not my type of game but its the last word in ww2 plane games....... http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/blink.gif
IL2 and IL2 Forgotten Battles are both great games. If you are into WWII Aviation its one to get. Also Pacific Fighters, made by 1C Maddox and Ubisoft, just came out. I don't think it has been released in the US yet though. Should release very soon! Up to 128 players per server giving it a realistic feel for aviation in the pacific. Graphics look extremely good.

Sorry, I know this is a very old topic but I am new to this forum. Have you ever played "Day of Defeat"? It's a Half Life 2 MOD, but it's so original. It may not have the best graphics but it's the #1 played MOD. And America's Army is by far the best war/ http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/mockface.giffirst person shooter ever.

I have already mentioned World War 2 online and by far the Greatest WW2 game ever made for adults IMO.
But here are some I left out that deserve mention.
Red Baron: has to be mentioned because it was the first real online sim that was any good.
European Air War: amazing game of its day done by the Maddox team that now does IL-2
The Close Combat Series: A real time squad level tactical wargames based on the AH game Squad Leader. Simply the best games ever of their genre. With many many mods done by real Grogs.
Hearts of Iron: Strategic level WW2 game that is very well done.
Combat Mission: The best turnbased tactical wargame.
Red Orchestra: very well done
Board Games:
Axis and Allies: best beer and pretzel game next to the card game Naval War.
Jutland: Loved this game. No board and you played on the floor with templates for movement.
Squad Leader and it's expansions: (and I don't mean ASL) This game was the poop to play.
Any of the SPI prestag series as well as Sniper done by SPI.
War in Europe: SPI game whose map was 10'x6' that required you to set up over 2,000 chits before you even sarted. This game took myself and friends 2 months to complete on average.

http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/353.gif
The Red Orchestra in-game video's took my breath away.... Those graphics and gameplay looked like some of the best for a WWII FPS I have ever seen...
I was wondering if it is really worth buying UT2004 just for the mod cus it looks like a game in itself. Also, how many people play it? How many people per server on average? And, overall, whats the general pro's and cons?
Thanks

in reply to the orginal question, my fav and imo best war games are (in no paticular order)
Operation Flashpoint, love the game, even thou it has several short comings, the ammounts of mods and people who have overcome the problems of the engine will make the game live on well to 06 when ofp2 comes out.
for example we now have reflective water, multiple gun positions and even an opsrey (everyone from the ofp community wanted one of those)
Call of Duty - Great Single player mode, impresive mp (much better then Sof2 which was the ony mp i had played until the time of COD)
The exanpsion pack united offensive has added alot to the game, adding another great sp campign and improving the mp. Also mod teams such as Heat of battle greatly improve the teamwork during mp.
Hidden and Dangerous 2 - one hell of a great sp campaign to it, its just never stops being fun, cant wait to find and buy a copy of the exapsion pack to cont. Also the mp is pretty funny imo.
Rome total war, great stray game. So much better then it predecssors. I dont see why so many people on there offical forums complain about it lol
Combat mission series, these games rock, sure they mighten have the graphical spelnder of other games but they are very cool. I would suggest to everyone to go to www.battlefront.com (http://www.battlefront.com) and DL one of the demos, if you love stragey games and ww2 http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_wink.gif
Well the above are my favs and sorta the reasons why http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif
About america armys, i never seen what so good about them, ive tried it out and found it to be very boring (especially the training for the SF where you have to sit thru a 20 minute lecture http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_frown.gif boo!)
Also MOH - i loved playing the orginal on PS and its sequeal but i lost intrest in the series after playing MOH:AA - i found it not quite what i had expected and lost intrest because of that http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_frown.gif

quote:
Hidden and Dangerous 2 - one hell of a great sp campaign to it, its just never stops being fun, cant wait to find and buy a copy of the exapsion pack to cont. Also the mp is pretty funny imo.

NJCL, the reason the demo looked anbd played like cod/moh is because they had a type of cheat code and they cheated the damage for the demo so Randy Pitchford could show off all the features without dying all the time. Also, there is an "Authentic Mode" without any HUD' s and more challenging/realistic gameplay.
thanks for the info........ http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-wink.gif

Didn't know its including MP Genre.
If yes, AA is the best but when i download a game its for the SP only but AA is sooooooo fun and no like CoD. You should hide carefully bcoz you don't wanna wait.

CoD sucks bigtime. I hate Cod. Completely overhyped. Game of the year my butt. I love how you have to shoot someone with a full clip from the Thompson from as close as 10 feet away to kill them. Do you know what a Thompson would do to your body from 10 feet? Oh yeah I especially like how everybody can jump up about 8 feet in the air. Thats nice too. Sniping's just about impossible. I hate CoD.
I'm looking foreward to BIA with high hopes of realism. I am love Ubi's work, especially IL2 and all the addons, but I'm gonna wait until one of my friends buys it first, to make sure it DOES NOT play like CoD.
I want a WWII Simulator, not a little boy's game.

11-09-2004, 05:43 PM
Oh Yeah. MOH: Allied Assualt was the sheet. I haven't stopped playing that game or its descendents. I hope that BIA is at least as good, and hopefully better.
WOW i didnt know there was someone else who thought COD was sh*te and MOHAA a good game...i agree,MOHAA/breakthrough/spearhead were a blast to play

The best war game I have ever played was on a 486 computer. It was a Vietnam game but I forget what it was called. I loved it. Really early untextured polys, but really lush vegetation which made the combat encounters always surprising. You could also shake down villagers for intel and stuff like that. It was awsome stuff.
OFP would be my next fav since it seems to be the closest simulation game. I'm the type of player that enjoys simulation and realism more than anything else. I like getting into fire fights as much as toting troops around the battlefield (within reason of course).

http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/784.gifMOH started all this realistic FPS shiet, It's Spielbergs concept and they both rock. COD is very emersive and is a good game in it's own right. HD 1 or 2 well I didnt really play em cause I didnt really like em hehhe. I would have liked MOH if it wasn't such an aracade run and gunning WW2 game. COD is good with a great realism mod and a strict server. UO is in desperate need of a realism server. The best war game I have ever played is Close Combat 5 Invasion Normandy. It really fun the muiltiplayer had some bugs but they have worked them out, ya'll probubly have never heard of it since ya'll like FPS so much. Anyways thats just my opinion.

Operation Flashpoint and MOH:AA tie simply because I loved both of them even though they were so different. COD surpassed MOHAA but MOHAA was more fun for its time. And those tunes were so **** catchy!
But Operation Flashpoint to date is my favorite non-arcadey shooter.

Brothers in Arms, well one from the list, i'd have to say CoD, but for wide open spaces with vichicles and planes, id have to go with bf1942.
Call of Duty would be my favorite single player war game. Followed closely by Black Hawk Down, Americas Army, and Rome Total War.

MoHAA and Spearhead.
Call of Duty.
Return to Castle Wolfenstein in my opinion sucked. The Kar98 wasnt even bolt action, it was just slow semi-automatic.
Red Orchestra is a great WWII fps mod.
Soldiers - Heroes of WWII was a good stradegy game. That's all for now, but im pretty sure Brothers in Arms will be on my list once i get the game or play the demo
