I am waiting for a new joystick, but meanwhile, I want to fly Lomac with a mouse, not a joystick. How do I do this?

You can't. The sim was never designed to be flown that way. Even then, using a keyboard is not a good idea either.

You can fly the demo with the mouse - not the final release. Don't know why they removed it.

How did it work in the demo?

It picked up the mouse as an axis - you did it the same way as picking a joystick axis - select the one you want - and move the device to have it detected.
I used to fly flight sims with a mouse many years ago on my amiga. nostalgiahttp://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_smile.gif
I also have a trackir - so you could use your head movement to control the mouse and hence fly the plane. Look down to go down - lean left to bank etc. It sort of made you feel like flying a very fast hangglider (i imagine)

OK, I set the mouse as an axis for pitch and roll.
But when I move the mouse ingame, my aircraft does not respond, though I do see the 3d animated stick in the cockpit nudge a little.

You may need to fiddle with its axis settings - either the curve - or whether its a slider or axis. Its been too long since I had the demo that I can't tell you what to do - just that it did work for me after some experimentation.
And I didn't have to go into any of the config files with a text editor or anything complex.

I had trouble with this as well when I first got the game, which was actually recently. But nevermind what anyone says about LOMAC supposedly not supporting mouse control - this is completely untrue and it is very possible to set up mouse yoke in LOMAC. To use the mouse as a stick, go to the options menu. On the device selector, choose mouse, to the right of the selector there is a switch for buttons/axes, switch it to axes. Select the pitch access and click on the change button, set it to Axis1. Set Roll to Axis0, and you can also set thrust control using Axis2 (the mousewheel) if you have one. It's that simple. Test it out- it should work perfectly.
