Troubling problem.

I'm currently in the observatory (71%) and the fight at the start of the area left me with almost no health.
When I go up and swing towards the second orb the landing simply kills me.
The main problem is I did not expect this and thus I overwrote my previous save with one in the observetory after I have already lost my life and since there's no water around I have no idea how to deal with this issue.
Is there a way to land without sustaining any damage?

Yes. Push the control stick forward (in the direction of movement) as you land to do a roll.

Wow. What a freak coincidence. This is exactly the problem I came here to post about, right down to the detail of saving over any older save files. I'll be trying this out tonight, hopeful that I don't have to restart.
