Jimmyeyes, read all of Jettsun's previous posts on these forums and it will be clear why he is no longer with us. And he "left" after the supposed security guard of his supposed estate found out he slashed the tires on his supposed cadillac escalade. Also, he doesn't build his own rigs because he's 14 and supposedly gets a 6,000 dollar month allowance from his father who lives on a 120-yard yacht name after his mother who died when he was 10 or something like that. A trebuchet is the biggest, baddest siege engine that ever was. You could compare it to a catapult or mangonel only it's much bigger and has a much greater range. It's really more of a successor to the catapult. The biggest ones (the Warwolf) were capable of hurling 300 pound boulders hundreds of yards. They could easily pound a castle wall into rubble.

Trebuchets were typically used while attacking a castle and not for it's defense. However, they represented the height of engineering prowess of the Medieval period. They have been called the "atomic bomb" of siege engines. I've also read that when the occupants of a castle under siege saw the trebuchets outside they would surrender immediately.

It's kind of sad because another invention came along that dominated the battlefield as well as the trebuchets; gunpowder. Once that happened trebuchets and the knowledge of building them were largely forgotten. That's sad because they were really a work of genius. They used nothing more than gravity and leverage put together in such a way as to do maximum damage.

Bovine, as mrmetal_53 pointed out, refers to cattle. Specifically Bovine is defined as "of or relating to or belonging to the genus Bos (cattle)"

This is of course important because more often than not livestock were the ammunition of the day...whether it was live or dead. (The first incarnation of the term "live ammo"?) The people slinging cows weren't just being mean to the cows. It was more an act of desperation and they used what they had on hand. Still though, anything that's been thrown a few hundred yards is gonna hurt if it hits you...whether it's a rock or good ol' Bessy.

Kudos to Jimmyeyes for his more concise answer. I just like trebuchets and wanted to spend a little more time in my explanation.

Howdy, Red_Wagon! I first learned about trebuchets in an episode of Nova on PBS. Two teams competed to build replicas of Warwolf and then test them on the shores of Loch Ness. One team used a fixed counterweight and the other team used a hinged box. Both teams were comprised of guys from some society that uses medieval building building techniques. No power-tools, just sharp blades, saws and lots and lots of sweat. One team (or maybe both) used a human-powered lathe! I thought that was cool in itself! Incidentally both trebuchets worked about eaqually well. However I missed the show on History Channel you and Furious_Gopher are talking about.

The show Ify1 is called Conquest. It may still be on but when I moved the new place didn't have the History channel. GRRRRRR It's a great show no matter what they're covering (which is medeivel stuff about 90% of the time).

I'm all over that extended version of the commercial.

We're in the same boat (and yeah RM sucks). I tried to save it the other night as well and no go. Best would probably be to wait and see if someone rips it from some other source. I did a google search and although alot of people like the commercial they're all linking back to the SixFlags sight for viewing.

If I ever find a good copy (that doesn't skip frames and screw up the guy's dancing) I'll post here.
