Hi folks!

Sorry, today I had too much work, so I'm late.
Here is the Friday update:

Final Difficulty settings for FB /i/smilies/16x16_robot-happy.gif :
http://screenshots.us.ubisoft.com/IL-2/Difficulty_japan_v103.jpg

Sorry, above was for Japan v1.3.. /i/smilies/16x16_robot-happy.gif /i/smilies/16x16_robot-happy.gif /i/smilies/16x16_robot-happy.gif
Real difficulty settings of FB:

Are you already ready for new hardware? It works on GF3 and GF4. Probably will works on some other cards finally. But old 3D engine is included in FB also, so old render also works, but water there is also better. And not only water.

Nice and useful for any king of single or coop missions features are now available also in FMB. You may select any of flyable aircraft also to fly AI only in mission. It is important for coop scenarios when we have such amount of flyable aircraft (request of users), and to use any new skin for each aircraft:
http://screenshots.us.ubisoft.com/IL-2/fmb1.jpg

http://screenshots.us.ubisoft.com/IL-2/fmb2.jpg

This one feature also was done by request of players in coop:
http://screenshots.us.ubisoft.com/IL-2/coop.jpg

Now in short words about campaign.
There are two kinds of campaign in IL2 Forgotten Battles - static branched and dynamic. Static branched campaigns are created manually and equal to IL-2 campaign with very minor changes. Missions in these campaigns are made in Full Mission Builder and then united into campaign. There are several historically correct static campaigns made by 1C:Maddox Games. Other static campaigns, made by game fans are available for download from the web. You can design your own static campaign in accordance with your taste and imagination, and events in every mission will be exactly as you want them to be.

IL-2: Forgotten Battles introduces dynamic campaign. Dynamic campaign is automatic. You select your nation, a squadron, and planes that you want to fly in every operation. You decide, when you want to join the war. After that the first mission in campaign is generated and offered to you. When you finish the mission, the results will be processed, and another mission generated - and so on, till end of war. Missions in dynamic campaign will never repeat, because many conditions, targets, time of day, weather, opposition and almost everything else are random.
In any operation, your forces will advance or retreat. The frontline moves historically, but you can speed it up or slow down in limited degree. If you destroy an object - it will stay destroyed for time that depends on it's nature. Every destroyed plane, friendly or hostile, reduces number of planes of this type on the theater, making their appearance less likely. Lost trains and transport columns will affect supply rate. If you kill or capture an enemy ace, he will not appear in the future battles.
One of the most important features of dynamic campaign is your squadron. Every pilot has a name, photo (is possible to replace the default photo by your own or you friends photos) a rank, medals, sorties and kills. His skill level is defined by combat experience. Pilots can be killed, captured, promoted, awarded or transferred. Your losses are replaced, but new pilots will likely have less or none of combat experience. Your squadron has limited amount of combat ready planes, and if it drops below some point, you will fly shorthanded until re-supplied.
You may choose to play from any time of 1941 to 1945.
You may choose to play for Germany, Russia, Finland or Hungary.

Select your country and type of campaign. Big window of campaign description we keep for old style of campaign. Old campaigns that created by users or third party firms also will work in FB, so we had not plan to change general interface, but was planning to keep maximum of compatibility.
http://screenshots.us.ubisoft.com/IL-2/Dc1.jpg

Now you input your name, select the period from which you prefer to start. If you select in the beginning or later dates you may play to the end of the war. So you now know that we making the campaign system that will cover all the maps of Il-2 and FB, but not only FB as was promised /i/smilies/16x16_robot-wink.gif Be sure it is great addition of the work:

http://screenshots.us.ubisoft.com/IL-2/Dc2.jpg

Loading screen for German fighter campaign. It is also possible to replace with any of images you like. Only be sure that you will use right size and format of image. Such feature is present for almost all screens in FB

http://screenshots.us.ubisoft.com/IL-2/loading.jpg

The brief looks usual. But you have a noticed that someone was awarded. There could be other messages also. But about others we'll speak on the next week.

http://screenshots.us.ubisoft.com/IL-2/brief.jpg

Arming is almost the same as in IL-2 except one important button.
http://screenshots.us.ubisoft.com/IL-2/arming.jpg

And then if you will use this button you may change the skins, etc.even in campaign mode.
http://screenshots.us.ubisoft.com/IL-2/custom.jpg

Debrief is also like the brief. It may contain a lot of info. Sometime later will show.
http://screenshots.us.ubisoft.com/IL-2/debrief.jpg

Roster of your squad. Please look what there also may happens in the low window. There is info which one pilot is gone: transferred, died, was captured, etc.

http://screenshots.us.ubisoft.com/IL-2/roster.jpg

And pilot profile. You also may change the photo. /i/smilies/16x16_robot-happy.gif

http://screenshots.us.ubisoft.com/IL-2/pp.jpg

That's all for today.

Question about the fully dynamic campaign.

Does that mean in each mission you can choose who and what you will fly as? Or do you select a pilot, and stay as him (or her) for the duration of the campaign?

No no, I didn't. That would be awesome but, will it work? Maybe over a LAN, but over the Internet? I certainly hope so.

Thanks for the Pic's, Luthier.

Oleg: another stunning update, as usual. It's well worth spending the afternoon pressing F5, after all... /i/smilies/16x16_smiley-happy.gif
One note, nevertheless: "IInd" should be written "2nd", as correctly done in IL-2, otherwise it makes little sense... (Look what I have to find to point out a fault in IL-2/FB)

I like the idea of pilots names (i love this posibility in Secret Weapons of Luftwaffe). But, why the information about enemy destroyed is so little?. I want to see the type of target destroyeds like at Secret Weapons and not a simple "x kill" message. I want a historical resume of my target destroyed in campaign mode (like Secret Weapons http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_smile.gif)

I think thats is not difficult make it. Can you?

Several nice features.

1. The AI only switch
2. Looks like you can switch off game applied unit markings, allowing users skins with markings to be not overwritten.
3. The ability to switch of course and waypoint markings on the pilots laptop map.
4. Looks like complex engine start is seperate to complex engine management
5. You can select instant success in the difficulty section instead of having to modify the missions. Should make those "impossible" campaign missions possible for the less talented among us (me).
6. Not only can you assign a different custom skin to every plane, you can also mix up the skill levels within an individual flight.

The only things I haven't seen cleared up yet is will we get seperate briefings for each side in coops, and will we be able to fly dynamic campaigns in coop mode.
If that's all I have to "complain" about, I'm going to be a very happy pilot. /i/smilies/16x16_smiley-very-happy.gif /i/smilies/16x16_smiley-very-happy.gif

Hi Oleg and team,

"Now you input your name, select the period from which you prefer to start. If you select in the beginning or later dates you may play to the end of the war. So you now know that we making the campaign system that will cover all the maps of Il-2 and FB, but not only FB as was promised Be sure it is great addition of the work."

This is fantastic, and I had been hoping that precisely what you describe would be implemented. It would be a shame to have rendered the old maps obsolete.

Thanks so much for the extra work,

Oleg, et. al FB looks stunning! As a mission builder I especially like the details added to FMB, especially with individual aircraft targets, skins and weapons loadouts. 32 players in coop looks very exciting, especially with the addition of multi crew bombers (will allow enough extra slots for fighter escort).

I don't know if someone else asked these questions, but here goes:

1. Will the net code be reworked to support 32 players in coop? Currently, even on the best systems with fastest (cable) connections (about 380 kb up and >2 mb down), 16 players seems about the max the host can support.

2. Will squadron management and dynamic campaign functions work in coop (multiplayer format)? I have designed campaign type missions that are fun and exciting but a few problems exist: first the host knows the mission objectives, opposing aircraft, and often the best way to win the mission. The dynamic campign applied to coops is the perfect solution to these problems.

3. Is the bug associated with AI aircraft that spawn after the mission has started and invisible to all players except the host resolved?

4. Is there a way to limit/control the availablility of aircraft in the selection screen for coop? For instance, in some cases, I want certain aircraft to the AI aircraft, but if the aircraft is to show in the mission (and is flyable) it must show in the aircraft selction screen, and has the potential of being selected by a human player who does not read the brief or listen to the host.

Thanks Oleg and team for the exciting new stuff in FB!

This is, at least for me, the best friday update until now, because it shows a lot of improvements for IL-2 that were requested by users, myself included, especially in the FMB section.
So thanks a lot Oleg and team!!!! /i/smilies/16x16_smiley-very-happy.gif

Now, i apollogize for this, because its a little out of place, but i have to ask...

No! As it looks now, I´m going to buy two copies of FB instead. One (of course) for me, and another one for a friend (what could he do to ever deserve this?).

BTW, it would be interesting to know, if all of the graphical improvements one will enjoy with FB and a GeForce4 (or maybe even 3), will also be available for users of a Radeon 9700 card?

But since that one´s got at least as much functions as those, i´d think so.

Mughead,

Answering the third question, it's NOT a BUG. Already in the manual and readme says that in coop mission, ALL THE PLANES MUST APPEAR on the mission AT THE SAME TIME. I know this because the same thing happened to me with the firsts coop missions i made, and have to change them. Again, its no a bug, its just not supported by the game, for the moment. Dont know on FB /i/smilies/16x16_smiley-happy.gif

4- Thats just one of the great thing about the update, it tells youy, and shows you, that now you can set all the flight you need to be flyed by the AI only, so humans can not select them when they are going to fly the mission /i/smilies/16x16_smiley-happy.gif

I can't believe all the advancements you guys are making - you truly lead the way for flight sim technology...

That you could acomplish one but not the other objective, still have, in my example, achieved the 25% destruction of all planes, but have MISION FAILED, because you destroyerd, for example, 4 planes from one flight but none from the other. You achieved the 25% of destroction of the 8 planes, but mission failures because one flight didn't have any cassualties.

I expected you to say that /i/smilies/16x16_smiley-happy.gif
Actually there are two ways out of the situation. First - just to describe it in the brief. Second - to use "indirect" mission objectives. The idea is that you don`t actually need to kill 25% of those bombers (flying in 1, 4 or more groups) but you have to hamper them to bomb thir target. So the real objective is not to kill the planes but to save their targets. Furthermore, the logical chain can be more complicated: you are intercepting bombers flying to unload their bombs over your tanks attacking enemy lines. What should be the objective? Killing the bombers? Protecting your tanks? Or destroying enemy lines? You can pick any one, more convenient for you /i/smilies/16x16_smiley-happy.gif

Yep, that's a thing that should be worked on.
Now:
12 bombers =
4 - 4 - 4
Destroy 50% of 'em means: Destroy 50% of EACH 4:
2 - 2 - 2
If you destroy them like that:
4 - 2 - 0
mission fails /i/smilies/16x16_smiley-wink.gif . That why we need bigger groups:
12
Destroy 50% of 'em is now easy:
6
Isn't it?? It doesn't MATTER anymore WHICH bombers are destroyed. Just "6" matters.

Ta-152

Look at the differences in the tail, that's an easy clue. (Except that some Dora-9s were manufactured with Ta-152, but not vice-versa.)

And yes, Dora-9s were manufactured with bulged canopies, too.

Something that caught my eye are the references to being 'captured'. This never happened in IL-2, and has always been a sore spot for me in offline play.

For instance, you could bail out over an enemy airfield and be perfectly ready to fly the next mission. This seemed totally unrealistic.

Now that front lines have been implemented, maybe it will be possible to be captured if our pilot bails out or sets down in enemy territory. This would add extra drama to each mission. Imagine nursing back a damaged plane just so you could reach friendly territory. Let's hope that this feature is actually included.

This must be one of the most important DevUpdates since FB's announcement.
If I ever was tempted to even think about buying another WW2sim, then now this temptation is no more. This update should strike fear into the hearts of your enem... err... compet... err.. hum.. you know who... Eh, forget it. What was I talking about?

Luthier, the new detail: did you mean the option for switching off path maps? That's also a cool new thing.

Lately, I've seen a book with an overview of most soviet aircrafts. There are mentioned a couple of variations to the Yak9 line of fighters, which are not in IL-2 yet, namely a Yak9B (fighter bomber version) and a Yak9DD (longrange record plane, even bigger fueltanks than a Yak9D). Are they suitable for inclusion into IL-2, Oleg?

Ohh, and by the way: Congratulations on your success in Japan!
Are there already some japanese voices calling for maps and aircraft to simulate the last days of WW2 on the russo-japanese frontier?

This update is more encouraging for me than any new flyable plane or graphic improvment.

This is exactly the kind of dynamic campaign I have wanted for this sim. I remember how many months ago a steady chorus of us begged for a Red Baron-type dynamic campaign. Oleg seemed cool to the idea at first, arguing that dynamic campaigns where one pilot can win the war are unrealistic. I think the issue was muddled because of semantics--some people defined "dynamic" as being like SWOTL and others as being like Red Baron. Most of us liked the pilot rosters from SWOTL and the campaign from Red Baron, now we will have the best of both games in a much better sim.

The results here show that these developers will actually listen to what players say in these forums when we present a reasonable and nonconfrontational argument. Really this is much more than we deserve in a add-on--finally Il2 will have a top-notch offline experience to match the already great online play.

One thing that would really improve offline play further is if AIs had more of the weaknesses of human players--such as being blinded by the sun, losing sight of planes in clouds, engine overheat, gunners affected by g-forces (players too), etc.

Mini map path= no waypoint markers.

Feature ask for by many online coop players. You get your breif before you get in the plane.

Once your in cockpit,

a. you better have memorized your brief,

b. might want to have a printed map,

c. you best know your combat area,

d. you must have some basic piloting navagation skills.

e. you don't have intell of exactly where and when you get jumped.

f. only the best pilots will score!

Fantastic work....just the ticket Oleg. One minor quibble is the use of English in the briefs and elsewhere. 'Surprize' is spelt wrong for example. Some of the briefs in IL-2 were hard to read. Wouldn't it be a good idea to get them passed by an English speaker? My grammer isn't perfect but I'd be happy to do it if you like. Anyway, these updates are right on the money.

Sarky post there Lemon Fresh. I can read and write English but I'd use a spell check if I was bringing a game out. Doubt if I was the only one who thought the briefs sounded odd. Just a suggestion, you know.

Hmmm...

Whenever I fly, I always draw the legs, waypoint to waypoint, with a pencil on the map. It makes navigation easier. Back on land, I erase the lines since they're not needed any more.

I don't know if military pilots are supposed to remember it all by head, but if 5 minutes work with a pencil can severely reduce the memory load, I would expect it do be done frequently.

Soo... for me waypoint markers on the map are just realistic. Being able to rotate the map, just like I do in my hand, would be an extra bonus.

Having that little airplane icon automatically showing where I am, though... that's unrealistic. I don't mind the icon itself, just let me place it, and follow up its placement, on my own. Just the way I move my thumb on the map when I do the real thing.

Hi 1C team. Nice shoots and good jokes /i/smilies/16x16_smiley-very-happy.gif

When i was looking at new screenshots i think about one question. Will planes skins be in size 512x512 pixels again or will be greater? Because for better quality is better bigger format like 1024x1024. The skin files will be than 4*257 kB per one. It could be much more smaller if the game will use *.jpg formats. It also reduces load of upload of the host server! If needed *.bmp for texturing in game - there will be a small routine converting *.jpg files on *.bmp files. On user comp will be than two files - one *.bmp for game and one *.jpg for uploading to your host and other players in game. Converting takes minimum of CPU time and dont slow down net transfers of datas with flyght informations! Quality of skins will be the best and we (users) can do our dreams skins much more nicer than now /i/smilies/16x16_smiley-wink.gif

That is all - just an idea.

Salut! Collin

Great work and thanks a lot for the information.
Some questions...

- Will the dynamic campaign be available for multiplayer?
- ... and pilot log?
- Could it be possible that AI planes takes off at different times in multiplayer?.

I saw this question asked a few times but couldn't find an answer, but it can the dynamic campaign be flown as multiplayer coop?? That would be an awesome capability..even if only against AI opponents...

Oleg, thanks for taking the time to answer my questions.

-- 3. Is the bug associated with AI aircraft that
-- spawn after the mission has started and invisible to
-- all players except the host resolved?
-
- Did you read readme and manual? That problem there
- is described.

I understand what the manual states on this issue, however let me explain this from a mission builder point of view. It is possible to make aircraft appear in offline missions after the mission has started. This is a great feature because it vastly simplifies mission planning (and hence mission building time), especially with respect to AI fighter intercepts.

Several problems exist with this requirement from the multiplayer perspective.

1. All AI aircraft must be loaded at mission start, which tends to induce excess lag until some of the other aircraft are destroyed. This really isn't so bad, but does require the mission to be very carefully planned.

2. For long missions, AI aircraft that will intercept later in the flight must fly around some long complicated path, or in circles for several (or many) minutes before they can finaly fly the waypoints for intercept. This complicates the time of intercept in missions and often requires several attempts to get it correct.

3. It is not possible to have aircraft spawn on the runway during the mission (either to be attacked by enemy bombers or to take off for an intercpet). In the case of bombers catching aircraft on the runway getting ready to take off, you have to set up an airstart with the first waypoint close to the base, which eliminites some elements of the flight (such as takeoff, and ingress, and some of the things that can happen during these phases).

I would love to see this feature added to multiplayer coops. Perhaps others would too. I can understand if it is not within the capabilities of the current code. It works now and I can live with it. If it is possible, perhaps it can be added in a later patch or update.

-- 4. Is there a way to limit/control the
-- availablility of aircraft in the selection screen
-- for coop? For instance, in some cases, I want
-- certain aircraft to the AI aircraft, but if the
-- aircraft is to show in the mission (and is flyable)
-- it must show in the aircraft selction screen, and
-- has the potential of being selected by a human
-- player who does not read the brief or listen to the
-- host.
-
- Probably you should look with more attention to may
- post today.

My appologies. I missed the AI only check box in the screenshot. I am assuming this eliminates what I'm talking about in #4 above?

If we wrote it in manual probaly we tried to make it? isn't it?

I have no time to explain the problems around it. So in FB will be same feature.

It is impossible to make currently.

Greetings Munghead!
Personelly I feel it's important to take the extra time when building missions to have all planes spawn at the start. I know it can be hard to get them all coordinated but if you have aircraft spawning mid mission you get the big spawn pause. It's unavoidable. Any time you see that in a mission it's a dead giveaway that something is going to happen soon! And it spoils the suprise if you will.

I would like to ask oleg if it would be possible to have a timeout for aircraft takeoff waypoints. So that aircraft spawn on the runway at the begining of the mission but wait for a setable time interval before taking off. Possible?

Cheers.......Smokin256

Hi to you all!

I've seen a picture of the command board of the Ju 87 with quoted areas, and I'm eager to help enhancing my favorite game: here my purposals.

1) Peut correspondre l'interrupteur des sir¨nes
Should match with siren switch

4) Donne la marche suivre pour réussir un bombardement en piqué
Advice to ensure correct dive-bombing

5)Indique la vitesse limite en piqué ne pas dépasser.
Warn for the pilot: an aircraft speed higher than 600 km/h is hazardous.

I wrote my translation in French first because it's my native tongue to avoid some mismatches.

I was thinking about some improvements:

- a pilot head manager working with the ID of player: with a photo (bmp or something like that), the plane pilot would wear the face of the player. I believe that some players would love playing the game and believe they really pilot!Another possibility with this photo should apper with the multiplayer chat: a reduce picture should appear when somebody send a message.

- an option for vocal chatting: some sound cards offers effects (I've got an SB Live and there are 2 effects, when they are linked, that render a genuine sound that are approaching the frication linked with laryngophonic communication material: Frequency Modulator, mix in a slighty detuned chorus) This option should be activated for online-gaming.

- I've seen that some English planes, such as the Hurricane will appear on the add-on. Why not working on other planes that had importance on the European front during WW2, particularly near Norway, Sweden and Finland: a lot of planes from USA were "lend" to allied forces:here some suggestions:

English Planes:
Supermarine Spitfire or Seafire (Marine version of the Spitfire)
Short Sunderland
Avro Lancaster

German Planes

Heinkel He-177 Greif (with 4 engines but seems to have only 2 engines)
Heinkel He-115 (an hydravion that had importance for the Luftwaffe in Baltic See)

Sorry but I'm late!

Thanks for the reply Oleg. I don't expect a technical answer. A simple yes/no is sufficient. /i/smilies/16x16_smiley-happy.gif

As mentioned above, perhaps it would be possible to add a timeout feature to the takeoff waypoint for aircraft. I don't know how complex this would be, but it is a great idea! It would also solve/simplify several issues I described above. Perhaps this feature could be added in an upgrade after FB is released, or in the next sim.
