Just curious how long you think it took the FarCry guys to do from start to finish one of the average maps in the SP FarCry? 2 weeks? 2 months?

cant give you a timeframe for sure, but im assuming that there are multiple people working on a given level at once, so a guess would be in the 2 week timeframe for a near complete level, with final builds and tweaks occuring later.

It all depends on size of the map, complexity of it etc. Anything from within the hour to far more, working on maps that I spent far beyond 150 hours on here, without being finished yet ;-)

150 hours isnt all that much either..least to me. My work usually runs in the months, but thats because im picky..as well as a single parent with 2 big distractions, lol.

If I was really quick I could get a Quake 3 Arena MP map done in 2 weeks... working on it for 10-12 hours every day. And those maps are bare.

Judging from the terrain tweaking and all the little details seen in the maps, I'd guess that you get most of the maps 80% done in about 2 weeks, if you know exactly what you want in the map, know the editor, have all the assets done.

Then another month or so bug fixing (AI, textures on terrain, adding extra details etc). I imaging AI and getting the terrain finalized takes the most time. Well then you can spend tons of time on the vegetation.

So if several folks work on the map in shifts... maybe 1 month per SP map.

IMHO i would say that it would depend on how well u know the edditor. It might sound strange but i draw my maps out first (quick sketch, i found that if u just opened a map and started building it takes alot more time that a planed map i would say spending 8 hours a day 5 daysa week 2 weeks would be tops for a decient map
just my 0.02

That's true.
from my experiences using worldcraft (now dubbed "hammer"), a planned map was so much quicker to make than an unplanned map you just do as you think along.
Because when you have a planned map, you have documentation to refer to. something to ADHERE to.
Doing it as you go along, you can sometimes get stuck in a rut, because you think of one thing to do, then think.. "wait a sec... this might be better!" then you have to possibly redesign your entire level, haha
Well i've been there anyway :P
