Ok...I'm trying to give my missions that polish that the ones that ship with the game do. The big thing I'm working on right now is the landing waypoints. In the retail missions when you get to your final point a new set of waypoints are displayed for the landing pattern. I cannot seem to get this to happen. Whats the trick?

The trick is to use Autopilot while you fly and look at the map, because the new waypoints you see belong to the AI landing pattern.

The player is expected to follow the points as well. Not that I ever do...but for whatever reason I cant get them to trigger which means unless I order otherwise, the AI will continue to follow me right down to landing (at which point they circle overhead).

Just trying to polish the missions up a bit! http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

Why do you think so? You're free as a bird ...
Just hit "A" for Autpilot after the last waypoint and the AI landing pattern appears on the map. But you may just ignore it as soon as autopilot is toggled off.

- the AI will continue to follow me right down to landing (at which point
- they circle overhead).

Yes, I think that this is one of the odd new AI "features" in FB compared to IL-2. Now as a flight leader you have to order your wingmen to "Return to Base" so they don't follow you in formation and circle above you while you land. My experience is that they won't fly to the first point of their landing pattern then, but to their last regular waypoint. If you placed that waypoint too far away from the base, you'll never see them again.
It seemed much better in IL-2 where your flight knew that they had to land after the last waypoint. They are so stupid now.

Personally I don't like missions with too many waypoints. You need WPs only for the general direction. The AI have their own landing pattern and will ignore yours (or fly your pattern first and then their own). The last waypoint should be about 5-10 km away from the base as the AI landing pattern is about 4x5 km large.

Ok...we're mostly talking about style here but I still don't think we've hit the core of the issue. Why in the retail missions, the one that ship with the game...that after the player has flown over the last waypoint...a new set of waypoints appear showing the landing pattern. This serves two purposes:

1) It indicates to the player that they can now enter the landing pattern. If you're someone like me who tries to follow the waypoints whenver they are logical, this tells me I should try and land...even better, I should try and land before the rest of my squadron takes up the que http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif

2) It indicates to the players flight to break off from the leader and enter the pattern. This gives the mission end a fairly realistic feeling. I haven't been able to replicate it yet while I'm sure other missions and campaigns I've seen do this. I've examined these and I haven't found the trick yet.

So just looking for a bit of a clue as to where I should look on that http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

Thanks!

I simply don't think that this is the case. I guess you were using autopilot when you played the retail mission. There shouldn't be any difference between retail missions and your own missions.

I just played the hungarian G-14 retail mission and there were no extra waypoints appearing.

Is there a way to skip waypoints? Sometimes I am already so far from the last waypoint before landing, that I just fly straight to base. My wingmen then won't be able to land, but I'd think it's silly to first fly to the last regular waypoint and then to base...

If you're the flight leader order them to go to the next waypoint or to return to base.

*Zveno* X > Navigation > Return To Base
You can repeat this several times.

Unless something's changed in a recent patch, you only get the extra waypoints if you have autopilot engaged at the last waypoint before landing. It may also be related to having the last waypoint before landing within a certain distance of the airfield..... time to do some testing methinks....back soon http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_wink.gif

Shows how rarely I use autopilot. They now appear at the final non-landing waypoint if autopilot is already engaged at that time or if you engage autopilot shortly after. Testing is not exhaustive, so I don't know if distance from homebase for the last non-landing waypoint is a factor. I had mine at a little under 10km out.

Interesting...thanks Tully! I'll do some testing as well and see. Its possible that I just fly non-auto on my missions in order to fully test them and get bored flying around an already otherwise "tested" mission http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_smile.gif
