MMORPG's will probally be all thats left...Im looking forward to World Of Warcraft but I doubt I will have enough time to play for it to be worth paying $15 a month for.

What is worse, Atari has claimed the rights for D&D games, and they obviously suck at making RPGs.
I've been playing Star Wars Galaxies for a couple of months, and I find MMORPGs very well worth the money you spend.

I have this issue with paying $40 for a game and then $19.95 a month just to be able to play the stupid thing. That's why I never bought PlanetSide after I Beta tested it.

Planetside.. I got a Gamecard and game as a present last Christmas. I thought i was too old to be getting toys http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_smile.gif
It was a pretty decent concept, and a respectable game.. But the balance is disguisting, and the developers seem mildly incompetent.

I have the same problem as redneck, a monthly charge really stops me from buying a game.

Till the RPG genre picks back up again may I suggest...
If you look at all the custom content pluss all the content from the two excellent expansion packs Neverwinter Nights is almost it's own sequal.
They've added skyboxes and unlocked the camera view for a more immersive game and have made the engine far more mod friendly so the mods are flying.
There's high quality persistant worlds for NWN's as well like A Land Far Away that recreats a large chunk of the Forgotten Realms, and everyone actualy role plays their characters out.
Right now I'm waiting on a mod that's nearing bug free status that combines Baldur's Gate I & II, Tales of the Sword Coast, Throne of Bhaal and a number of the best user made mods into one seamless game. You play the entire thing through the Baldur's Gate II engine (even BGI) so you keep your character and kit seamlesly through the entire series. It also has alot of custom improvements added to the game (better AI for one). One warning though it has a VERY complex install process. Even if you have everything set up perfect (which is not easy) it takes over an hour for the installer to finish, and you need to spend at least a couple of hours going through the forum and d/l'ing the appropriate mods. Not for the casual.
If anyone's interested they can start their search here...

I wouldn't bother with Neverwinter Nights unless it's for single player the number of people playing it online are slowly dwindling I ran a server for it for a very long time and axed it a while back because of this issue. As for MMORPG's I would never fund such a band of robbers who expect me to be dumb enough to constantly pay more money for the privelige of playing something I already bought and if others had any sense they wouldn't either forcing the companies to release such games to play as NWN did meaning anyone can host their own server with no monthly fees that was how NWN was so successful!
Very touchy point with me I love RPG's and am having to do without thanks to money grabbing companies. (End of rant)

I'd say, that although you have to pay a monthly fee for the MMORPGs, it helps them get better. They are constantly balancing classes/weapons/npcs and/or adding new content to the game. So, as I said before: I think it is worth the money.
When I said that Atari sucked at making RPGs, I was thinking of NWN.
If you haven't tried it, Planescape: Torment is one of the best Infiniti games out there.
