I see alot of B-1's and Ospreys where I live, but the other day on the freeway driving I spotted not one, but 2 F14's in formation, in swept back wing configuration which flew just in front of me about 600 feet above the deck!!!!

I was yellin and screaming and givin them a wave and thumbs up- I would bet the people around me driving thought that I had gone crazy or something! They were amazing to see! http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif

I see them. They're directly beneath the Earth's sun..... .... ...NOW.

Whoops, should have raised the sarcasm flag. What I meant to say was, this story might be more interesting if you told us more about the location than 600 feet above the freeway. In fact, if you see so many planes, I think it would be cool if you told us about where you live and more details about what you see.

Well where I live is kinda my own personal business and doesnt matter as far as how great these planes looked to me twelve, but since you asked, Im located in the Texas Panhandle. Thats whats so special about seeing F14's, here, 800 miles from any salt water... And the fact that I have not in seen any before hand other than TV, if memory serves correctly...

Nothing beats Jet Fighter flying right overhead.

Very cool.
As I kid I lived in England (back in 70-72), and
We had a large field right in front of our house. One Day two RAF Harriers was scraping rooftops of our housing complex and it was just so amazing for me at that age and they were so close you could read the serial numbers engraved on each rivet.

And they were going, I'd guess 4-500knots.
What a sight. Never forget it. I ran towards
my house to get to the roof top to see more,
but after 2 steps, I realized they were already gone.

Later as a adult and in the service myself I learned it was a feasibility study of a attack of a AFB (the old Mildenhall Base was the test bed I think) and a test of the defense systems of the base.

So yeah. I know what your talking about.

Ahhh, your post brought back some great memories of when I have seen F-14's. Such a beautiful aircraft, I first saw it at the Canadian International Air Show in Toronto, and then later when I went to NAS Oceana. At Oceana it was so great, F-14/18's were doing touch & go's for the better part of an afternoon. Then a flight of them took off, ended up coming back at sunset. The barracks I was in is lined up with one of the runways, and so on final they flew right over. I was just watching them in the pattern as I polished my boots. The base I was at is some joint reserve base, not sure what its called but its very close to NAS Oceana and NAVSTA Norfolk. Anyone know? I envy anyone who lives near any fighter base, especially if its NAS Oceana or NAS Lemoore.

I live in Siilinjärvi, Finland. Base of Karelia air command is situated at Rissala airport just about 10km from here. I got to see Hornet fly-overs quite often. Also Finnair's MD-10s landing to Rissala airport tend to fly just over our house. Pretty good place to be aviation fanatic in Finland http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

I saw lot's of Mig-21s and Saab Drakens as a child, now its only Hornets and occasionally Hawks http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/images/smiley/16x16_smiley-indifferent.gif

I once saw an F-15 taking off from Tinker AFB doing damn near completely vertical flight on what HAD to be takeoff. I have heard about the thrust to weight and the ability to do this... but to see it just floored me. http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/images/smiley/11.gif

I live about 5 miles from Luke AFB. It's an F-16 training base. I can get there in about 10 minutes and sit on the dirt road at the end of the runway.........awesome. Back in '95 we heard rumors of F-117's flying in so we sat all nite and waited for several nites. We got to see 'em!!!!

As an aside, housing developments are encroaching upon the base and some of the new homeowners are crying about the noise of the jets. The base has been there since before WWII (it was Luke Field then) and I'm apalled by the audacity these people have knowing full well that the base was there before they bought their homes. They say the sound is too loud. I say it's the sound of freedom.

They are beautiful birds. I live on the N.Carolina/Virginia boarder, so I get all kinds of beautiful aircraft action from all branches of the service, especially the Navy. Tomcats, Hornets, and the occasional Harrier II going to Cherry Point are always a great site to see. But I must admit, my best "in action" sighting of Tomcats was on a dependency Cruse onboard the USS. Nimitz in 2000. Being that my father was an E/A-6B pilot at the time, I got to go up into the bridge and see some T-Cats take off (amongst some others, including my father take off in his Prowler, ive never been more proud in my life). But, as you said, every time you see a military aircraft fly over, its a real treat. Hope you see some more Tomcats Spikey!

I live just south of richmond and for the past 6 years or so have been going to the airshow in NAS Oceana, Going back there and seeing the 14's Makes me feel like I did the first time I went.
On a sad note I heard this might be the last year for the f-14 demo team based there. Might just be a rumor dont know can anyone give me some more info?

To answer your question Voodoo, by 2007 all F-14's are to be taken out of active service. However, VF-101 which is the Fleet Readiness Squadron (FRS) and has the demo team, is to be disestablished in 2005. So unless any of the three remaining tomcat squadrons fly the demo, that could be it.

The pilots of the F-16 usually use Viper as its name.

It's Fentress airfield. At a younger age, I grew up around NAS Norfolk and in my teen to college years, near Oceana. In fact, the house is just 4 minutes away from the base and I'll be heading back home for a visit in the next coming weeks.

I have been to all the bases in the Tidewater Virginia area. From Langley, Little Creek to Fentress. Turning accidentally into the CIA HQ was interesting and quickly turned right around.

Yeah My gusse is that the F-14 will be around as long as the airframes hold out.

IN halifax where i live there is an annual air show. Anyways the day befor it starts and all the Aircraft start to land and come in my fater and I would hike to the end of the runway and hide from the MPs in the feild so we would watch the aircraft land. A B1 came in for its landing approach and we put out big blue tarp so he raises his gear went full millitary and flys over us at about 100ft... that was about 5 years ago and I think i am still suffering hearing loss...great times with the old man though

Hey Jewels_201, I have also been to Langley AFB, Little Creek, and Fentress. At Little Creek I took a ride on an LCM-8 with assualt craft unit two and made a beach landing, well all he did was put us on the beach, then we backed up. Saw the navy seals Mach V, amazing, and the coast guards cyclones as well as other assualt ships. Later I went to this building where inside is a mock up on the floor of a beach landing. It's all interactive it's pretty cool, it's where they teach marines I guess how a beach landing is supposed to go. This was in 2002 so post 9/11 which meant that we weren't allowed to go to close to the aircraft carriers or LHD's. Took a tour on the USS Carr, that was neat. Also saw some subs, we warned not to take any pics of the Ohio class for obvious reasons.

Langley was cool to, saw the 1st FW's F-15. Heard the 149th ANG F-16's start up but didn't see them. Right when we got off the bus we saw F-15's doing ACM, real sick.

To many memories, I'd have to look at some pics to remember them all.
