The following is just a post from another thread that inspired me to post my experience.

I had the same CTD issue on the Generator level. I had finally settled on the right tweaks for my system and the CTD issue followed.
After an uninstall, reinstall, and a bit of pondering (actually I thought of the problem first, but didn't accept the possibility), I realized it MUST be the savegame file of the last Checkpoint. It must be corrupted or something. Every time I tried to load it up, blam, CTD.
So, I loaded the game, and chose the immediate preceeding Checkpoint. Blam, same CTD. Loaded up again, and choose the 2nd preceeding Checkpoint. Blam, same CTD.
I, then, decided to load the "Last" checkpoint from the Training level, going way back in the game. BING! The level and checkpoint loaded, no problem. So, obviously, there's nothing wrong with the Install, and/or running the game *itself*. The CTD issue, for me, was isolated to certain Checkpoint saves on the Generator level.
Bingo, gotta be corruption! So, I went back to the generator level and picked up at the last checkpoint that would CTD, and methodically checked each one. after 3, or 4, or 5, I forget, one of the Checkpoints loaded perfectly, no problem.
So, I've continued the game from that point. Bit of PITA having to reply part of the level, but since, I haven't had a problem.
Still pondering *why* the corruption occurs, but I suscept that's the issue for most folks experiencing CTD at certain points in the game.
File corruption.
So, check your other Checkpoints, methodically, and see if you have the same results. I'd appreciate knowing if its just me or if the problem is systemic.
Luck!
P.S., I've also noted that uninstall, reinstall, worked wonders for game performance. I suscept loading the Patch over an existing installation, may have *some* issues, not identified. Specifically, with an *optimized* defrag, where the game files are placed at the *front* of the HD. The Patch files *may* not have enough room to be placed in the same disk location, and some files may then be placed at the *back* of the HD. This is just a guess.
For me, I uninstalled and then re-installed, which placed the game files at the *back* of the HD; rebooted; then, immediately, I installed the Patch, and obviously the Patch files overwrote and placed any additional files, also, at the *back*; I then rebooted; lastly, I copied my backuped *savegame* files to the appropriate directory.
The game now runs 30-50 plus fps with just a very few dips below 30; I still need to add some ram, which should resolve the stuttering that remains during *Transitions*.
BTW, I still haven't defragged, BUT, *ALL* the games files are *continguous* at the *back* of my HD disk (at the moment).
