graphics choices in uru

when starting uru I see two choices for the nvidia card...NvidiaGeforce DDR(HAL) and NvidiaGeforce DDR(REF)....If I choose REF then the game will not start and gives me a black screen and a frozen cursor, but if I choose HAL then the game runs normally..I have the latest nvidia drivers 45.23 and direct x 9.0b
What is the difference in these two graphics choices??? The nvidia card is the 256 model from 3 and a half yrs. ago.
Dell XPS B1000r one gigahertz
256 megs ram
64 meg geforce ddr 256

REF: software mode

HAL tends to be better
