Hello all

I got the demo a few days ago, and will buy the game soon, and im hooked on the idea of making a Predator mod in Far Cry!

For those of you who dont know what i am talking about, Predator is a movie from 1987 with Arnold Schwarzenegger (the king), where he plays the leader of a black-ops commando deep in the south-american djungle, and they get hunted by this awesome alien (the Predator), wich can cloak itself, shoot lazer (or plasma..hmm), and do lots of other cool stuff, like make cool clicking noises :P

I figured the Crytek engine is the IDEAL engine for this, as i was very disappointed with the Predator part in the game Aliens versus Predator 1 & 2. Imagine you and your team cutting your way through the dense forest, when you suddenly hear clicking noises in the trees above you, and all hell breaks loose.

I used to be active in the Operation Flashpoint modding area, where i worked with Operation White Night, a mod that made the Swedish armed forces, and i am fairly skilled with 3d/2d modeling. Is there any interest for this idea?

Cheers lads http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/images/smiley/35.gif

I had the same thought, i asked a buddy what he thought he liked the idea and sent a formal letter to Fox interactive asking for permission, they said no because theres a jungle based predator game out this year and they wouldn't want it to be upstaged.

So i guess if one was made it couldn't be released because it would be illegal http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_frown.gif

how about if we make it a coaking robot, that is sent from a different galaxy, to kill specimen here and bring back theyr dna and skeletal strukture?

so it wont be a predator mod. it would be a robot mod. or something, hehe.

Love the Predator idea.

KTM_Calle,

I have had similar thoughts. My idea was to investigate whether or not CryEngine could deal with a computer controlled predator which human controlled players should track down, cooperative style.

Peter

Perhaps hard to get the predator's ai to behave well, maybe one should play the predator instead! http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif

Playing the predator would wreck the entire idea about cooperative multiplayer. A third option, however, would be to pair up the predator versus human counterparts, all being played by living people; "the player inflicting the most damage to the predator will take its part the upcoming round".

The idea has crossed my mind, bu copyright is an issue, as fox is very strict...so I thought:

The covert ops guys could be the same and ****, but why not just make a new monster?...I'll have a go at some concepts today or tomorrow and will see if i can get my scanne going... nothing but the monster would really have to shange...of course the name..maybe "Gut splattered human flesh" http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

Three thoughts:

1. First you need 3d exporter support from Crytek. I wouldn't start anything yet.
2. You can be similar and not infringe on copyright. Look at the box art of Contra for the NES. I'll be danged if that isn't the same Arnold looking to the side from the movie. Plus, even if you were trying to exactly follow the original movie, you would have differences for the game. Instead of Predator, call it "Hunter". In the movie the team was "rescue" based. Your team could be a secret kill squad for the govt or something. Instead of one "Hunter" you have 3 or 4. You can still fight normal guerilla forces in the area like the movie, I doubt that's infringement. You could even call the main guy "Arnold." In the movie his name was Dutch after all. I think it's better to go without the license anyway, you have freedom to do whatever you want You can use what you like, throw away what you dont, add what you need for gameplay.
3. GAMEPLAY! I really like the co-op possibilities. Imagine fighting through that with a team of humans online. You can have 2 flavors of co-op. Co-op as the hunters(facing loads of armymen) or the human perspective(facing the 3 or 4 predators). For multiplayer, run it like the hunted maps in TFC. there's 4 snipers, 1 hunted and an unlimited number of soldiers. So, for this, you'd have 3 or 4 predators slots versus 8 or more human slots.

Already in FarCry predator list:

cryvision
invisibility shader
Falling with the high waterfall, then sneaking, hiding, and running to not be seen by creatures....

I would play a Hunter(Predator)TC too. The TC may be more fun than a multiplayer/coop in many ways.

As soon as I started playing this mod, I heard the sound of sligh drumming in the jungle. It exactly reminded of the movie Predator, and it seems like the perfect game for it.

Being the Predator freak i am, when walking through a park near my house, my heart darn nearly stopped when i heard a bird that sounded EXACTLY like the Predator http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif

Destiny shouts in my ear "MAKE THE MOD"
When i first played the game, and got into the djungle, i thought, "here's the game for a predator mod!". I get lost in the djungle, and run into a damn pig! They kill a pig in predator! That is the ultimate proof that destiny wants this http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/images/smiley/16x16_smiley-happy.gif

I know Dave Stalker of FOX since way back BEFORE AvP 1, in the old AvP forum days. Started with interest in the Jag version original AvP.
I am pretty sick and tired of FOX "FOXing" any mods based on either Aliens OR Predator.... and then releasing pure crap themselves. I swear with AvP 3, when it comes it had better be DX 9 optimized. lol I mean yes it is their licence etc, but damn, wtf they don`t put out better product based on the licence is anyones guess.

YES!I've allways loved the idea of a Predator
based mod and this engine would be perfect for it.Yes its copyrighted but that doesnt have to stop you from making a Predator inspired mod.
I mean look the Natural Selection guys.(HL mod)
With the concept of Aliens and a few original ideas like the startegy and resources system, they turned the damn mod into a big hit.

You could have two modes for this mod.

Special Forces vs Guerillas (Teamplay,CTF,etc)

and then a SF vs "The Creature"(hunted mode)

It could be the same like the hunted mode thats in the official games(AvP series). The server randonmly picks a player to be the hunted/hunter and once another player kills him,he eventually be turns into it then.
The "Creature" should have some advantages like speed, climb trees whatever to able to compete against the "armed to the teeth" special forces. What also would be cool is if you would gain an extra ability after each kill.Well there ya go.I really hope that somebody takes the time to make a mod based of this movie.I sure would love and appreciate it.http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

Guys...first of all, NEVER let something like a silly little copyright violation infuence the creative aspects of the MOD, much less force your hand to make it crappier. Besides, consider Star Wars - the 800lb gorilla of the movie licenses - and how there's a Star Wars game of some kind for virtually every video game genre. This fact doesn't stop a multitude of Star Wars mods from popping up on various game engines, though. As far as I know, they don't care what you do with the likeness of their IP so long as you don't
1). Attempt to profit from it
2). Use copywrited audio or video(the soundtrack is copywritten by 20th Century Fox, while everything else Star Wars is property of Lucasfilm. All of that allegedly.
3). Attempt to defame or otherwise misuse the likeness of the IP(ie: Sar Wars pr0n)

As far as the mod being realtively similar to an officially licensed product, consider Star Wars: Battlefront by Lucasarts and the MOD Star Wars: Galactic Conquest, both of which use DICE's Refractor(Battlefield 1942/Vietnam) engine.

But all that's technical mumbo-jumbo, really. What you need to focus on is making a Predator MOD that doesn't suck. That is to say: A game that manages to stay true to the spirit of the movie while also being fun to play, which is going to be a pretty challenging task.

Hell, the only retail game I can even recall that totally pulled that off was Goldeneye 64, which is really remarkable if you think about it. Consider the polish of that game, the way it treated the source material and the way it was integrated in to a game design so well executed that it's still fun *today*. It was like having Half-Life for the consoles, before there even was a Half Life. Kind of some stiff competition there, if you ask me.

Seriously guys, what I'm trying to say is that I would LOVE to play a Predator game on this engine. I'm such a dork for the idea that I would go so far as to contribute to the development either creatively or even a small donation! But I should also insist that the game DOES NOT SUCK, either due to a lackluster development effort or from lame, fear-driven departures from the source material. There's enough MODS like that cued up for the Source engine, believe me.

Gameplay Suggestions!!!

Multiplayer Coop is a must! 2 player Predator coop/head2head HUNT mode vs a bunch AI soldiers(Marines! HOORAH!) = cool. Also: 1 player-controlled Predator vs many player-controlled Marines would be pretty cool with the right ammount of balance. Sort of a deadly game of Smear the *****, only the ***** in this case is a seven foot tall invisible, green-blodded lizzard-monster-thing with a laser cannon who makes a living harvesting human skulls...with his bare hands. HE'S ONE BAD MOFO.

With a different set of balances there's no reason why you coulnd't also have a straight-up Predator VS Marine DM mode, what with all the firepower availiable to the Colonial Marines.

The weapons from Aliens and the setting from Predator. Fox hasn't pulled this off yet, no harm in giving it a shot.

Well that's where it gets tricky.
The Galactic Conquest mod which i am currently a tester of has signed a somewhat undisclosed agreement with lucasarts. But before they did, they recieved numerous complaints from lucasarts. They tried to stop the development of this mod and many other star wars based mods on several occasions. But after a few discussions with the mod team leaders, the public, they finally agreed to let them continue to work on their projects.
I still have no idea why they actually let them and the ut2k3 troopers mod continue to work on their mods.I've seen many star wars based mods over the years and they all eventually got cancelled by lucasarts.
I am sure that it has something to do with www.jolt.co.uk. (http://www.jolt.co.uk.)(a gaming network and host of the two mods)Now there are about half a dozen quality sw mods being worked on thx to them.

I am not sure about fox though. Like shaitan said ,there is already an offical predator game supposed to come out next year.So if i were you i would do something like a tribute mod instead of putting hard work into copyrighted material and get "foxed" in the end.

I think a Predator mod is a good idea but I dont want to see Predator fighting against other Aliens. How about a Predator team fighting against a Green Beret, Navy SEAL, or Marine Force Recon team.

The passage is intense, but if u complete the journey you will find your destiney among the worlds greatest warriors... The Few, The Proud, The Marines
