Near The End, Trying to get back to Telescope

Catherine told me to go to the telescope and I linked back to the island with the spinning room but I can't get to it. The stairs are up so that way is blocked and part of the walkway around the inside of the dome is not there. Most of Gehn's books are missing the link pages.
How do I get to the other side of the island to get to the telescope?

Did you try to lower the stairs?

Wow, don't I feel stupid, LOL

Got another problem now.
I put in the numbers to unlock the telescope,
combination is all 2's, I clicked each square 2 times but my little finger never changes so I can open the hatch.
I thought it seemed a little odd that ALL the numbers were 2's, but now I can't get back to the island where Catherine's journel is to check it again.
Any suggestions?
