Does your whole computer lock up and you have to power down? ie pull the plug to get it to turn off. If so sounds to me like something is overheating. If you're overclocking, turn it down a bit. If not check out your heatsinks and fans.

i don't have to power down but in order to exit the game i have to use ctrl alt del to end task the program, how would i know if somthing is overheating, i've had no problems before it's been fine before now.

probly not heat then. post your system specs cpu,os,ram, vidcard, sndcard, etc. Also you may try directx diagnostic. click start > run > type in dxdiag >then look through each tab for problems, run the tests for direct 3d and direct sound. I've heard of people having similar problems with nforce2 motherboards, if you have one.

I've got Windows XP Home, Athlon 2200 xp, 1GB RAM, 8500AGP Radeon 128Mb, Hercules gamesurround fortismo II.
Should any of this cause a problem?

Is your sound.. on board or PCI? If it's PCI try changing it to a different PCI slot that helped me. I used to lock up and had to pull power.....but changing slot totally fixed it. I think i read in some forums before that IRQ sharing could cause some problems at times. I guess it depends on your setup.
