I rember seeing a photo of a MP40/38 (?) with a bent barell years ago and I can't find anything on the net about it...

The barrel was "curved" suposedly to shoot around corners!

Probably a prototype, anyone know anything about them?

Digger I saw the same pic your talking about but it was many moons ago that it was brought to light.

That weapon is nothing new in that link digger as the Aussie defence has had them and have done for two years /i/smilies/16x16_smiley-happy.gif (In rifle form)

The Germans used a curved attachment toward the beginning of the war to shoot around corners. It could be fitted on the barrel of the MP-40 and MP-38 sub-machine guns. The attachment would only last about 100 shots before wearing out. They were abandoned fairly early during the war because they were pretty impractical.

The gun snipe showed isn't the MP40 (for those of you who are firearm challenged), though it demonstrates a similar concept. Instead of featuring a curved barrel attachment the gun has a short barrel and bends in the middle, which will probably have a much longer longetivity in the field if it ever goes into operation at all.

Edit: there's a thread about the curved barrel attachments in the RvS forum, apparently they used them on the MP-44 (which was the predecessor to the AK-47. In fact, AK-47 was basically a knock-off of the MP-44) as well, but the later ones had prismatic sights where the earlier ones did not.

This atachment was used on the STGW 44 (mp44) and is called the Krummerlauf ("bent barrel")...

I am sure I have seen a MP40/38 version without the sighting setup... it was just a regular MP40/38 with a simple curved barrel.... no sight

Creative little buggars, weren't they? /i/smilies/16x16_smiley-very-happy.gif

Edit: These came in 30?, 60? and 90? /i/smilies/16x16_smiley-surprised.gif !!!! varients allthough only the 30? was mass produced.

The 90? might have come in handy with one of my Guillies/i/smilies/16x16_smiley-happy.gif /i/smilies/16x16_smiley-very-happy.gif

Yer they had problems with the rounds fragmenting in the attachment, sounds like something you would let some one else use /i/smilies/16x16_smiley-very-happy.gif
