I don't seem to have a shortcut produced on my computer when I install riven.

I went through start to try to get riven started and pressed right click; found properties, but it doesn't have a compatibility tab . . . !

I found a way to make a shortcut; i tried microsoft2000, but then switched to microsoft98.

I got it to go! But immediatelly, I found another problem! There is no sound! Well, at least I didn't get the sound for the cyan commercials and I didn't get any sound from the old man in the beginning(I know, he's the producer of the game) I also didn't get to hear the native speaking who takes the books. I did get to hear some ocean breaze, and then some music at the lower section of the golden dome island but not at the first entrance into the room with the five beatles. All in all, frustrating! I'm thinking about reinstalling with custome instead of recommended.

i still can't get sound after installing with custom, but then again, I didn't get to see the selection menu i remember seeing when installing on my previous computer also. So, I don't know; i guess I'll try reinstalling again to see if I pressed some buttons to fast or something.

Have you tried to install the game by changing the install exe to compatibility mode for your OS?

Gah, yes.. try compatibility mode.

Have to go to original exe, can't be a shortcut, right click on it, go to properties, and there's osmething around ther esomewhere about compatibility mode if you're using win2k or xp

I looked at my compatibility setting, and it said windows 95 for some reason. Then, I set it to windows 98, uninstalled, and then reinstalled. I immediatelly clicked run, and i still didn't get the sound from the starting cyan commercials and then no sound from the first guy scence that gives you the books before you enter the linking book.

Anyways, I then exited and checked my compatibility settings; they were on windows 98!

I'm thinking you want me to do something more about some execute files; i need more explanation on how to do that.

I don't know where else to right click beyond the short-cut other than where riven is stored at the start button and programs; i've clicked start - programs, riven(right clicked it there), and then right clicked around the expanded menu after clicking riven at the programs menu; i don't see any other area in properties to find compatibility other than right clicking the short-cuts.

I've also gone through the troubleshooting guide at the riven menu and read the read-me. I'm hoping to get this problem fixed without trying to contact programmers that probably don't even know about riven anymore.

O.K. I just switched and started riven based on compatibility of all sub-menu options(riven, registration, uninstallation, and readme) on windows 95, 98, and 2000. None of them worked! Curiosly perhaps is the fact that I have windows XP?

Maybe I should try uninstalling and reinstalling Riven with Windows 2000 compatibility? I'll probably try that before I come back here to find out any responces or new ideas.

I find it curious that when I uninstall and reinstall, the compatibility goes back to windows 95 except for I think it was the readme; well, all submenus compatibilities goes back to windows95 except one which is automatically set at windows98.

I don't know where to set a compatibility for install . . . .

Hello,
Have just uninstalled and reinstalled Riven and it is working for me. I am running Windows XP Home Edition. Have all of microsoft updates and all drivers are up to date.

This is how I installed step by step:

Install Riven CD 1 into drive
Close Red Ord Entertainment Window
Right click drive Riven CD is in and Explore Riven CD 1
Right click SETUP icon
Select Compatibility Mode Tab
Check, Run this program in Compatability mode,then select Win98/ME, Click OK
Double click Setup icon
Follow the instructions to install, (I used recommended setup)
Click START - Programs - Riven, then right click Riven icon and make sure Run this program in compatibility mode is NOT checked - click OK
Click START - Program - Riven, then right click Riven icon, then Send to desktop(create shortcut)
Click the desktop icon to start the game.

Hello, I just saw your post and tried to find some of what you wrote; i found at "My Computer" a bunch of icons about a,c,d,e, and F the Riven drive. I right clicked it, found a submenu called explore and thought that might have been what you meant by "explore". I found a "setup" folder . . . there is no compatibility tab from right clicking and clicking properties there or any number of other folders and icons with setup words in the titles. Sorry if this is tuff for you; i suppose I can only hope there is more possible insights from you guys; thanks for everything.

Sorry, The setup icon is the one with a red ball, must be Red Orb. So, Right click Setup icon and then click PROPERTIES. That is where you should find the compatibility tab.
This is a bit confusing, but I am sure we can get it working.

If this doesn't work, maybe we can go to an IM or voice chat program to be able to go through this real time.

I also can not play Riven on my new computer. I believe my problem is that Riven wants a 640x480 display and my computer wouldn't go lower than 800x600. I know the program is alright because it does play on my laptop.

Just checked my Display properties and the lowest setting is 800 X 600. Riven runs fine.
