View Full Version : All kinds of flak

I like experimenting with all the different units available in the FMB. There are a whole bunch of things that shoot at airplanes besides the traditional 20/25mm light AAA and 85/88mm heavy AAA.

The 37mm Nimrod and ZSU-37 are nice medium AAA units, although they don't quite have the rate of fire of a multibarreld 40mm Bofors. Another thing to consider is that the 37mm AAA shells in this sim are not fuzed for airburst. They only detonate on impact.

Medium flak with airburst fuzes would be a good addition to this sim. Maybe in Pacific Fighters... The US Navy even started using proximity fuzes in WWII to combat kamikazes. It was very effective, especially against unarmored Japanese aircraft.

Let's see, what else makes for fun flak alternatives....

Tanks and trucks and halftracks are good. Some fire fuzed 20 or 25mm shells, while others fire heavy machine guns. The M16 halftrack with its quad .50s is very impressive, but the AI seems have trouble holding a steady aim. The wirbelwind's quad 20mm is even deadlier although it also suffers from drunken AI aiming.

Small arms fire, such as you might encounter from infantry light machineguns and rifles, can be simulated with PzII's or T-40s. I prefer the PzII because the green ShKAS from the T-40 looks funny. The tanks do a pretty good job of aiming. The only downside is that a tank is a very obvious and large target compared to a well camouflaged machine gun nest.

What sort of flak do you like to set up?

For single missions, whatever seems appropriate to the scenario. For mulitplayer, the minimum that will get the desired "discouraging" effect on the attacking aircraft, flak is hard on online performance.

If you want high altitude flak that looks realistic use the 'Niobe' AA ship from the Stationary Ships menu. Hide it in some woods so that only the superstructure is showing, and depending on how much flak you want, align it along the path of the enemy for limited effect (the bow/stern guns get masked by the superstructure) and across the path for full.
Don't try and hide it in a factory building because the guns won't work if you do.
By using this one unit it gives the same (IMO better) effect and saves loads of work placing individual 85mm or 88mm guns all over the place.
Cheers!

I wish we had airfield Flak Towers.

Those would be great!

But, that takes all the fun out of making each little individual AA-position with sandbags, tenkts and all!

Placing tanks and APCs under aircraft nets will take away some of their obvious tank-ness.

Fly friendly!
