View Full Version : An Old Beta Tester on the Comeback Trail

A year ago, I was pleased to find that I was one of the first beta testers for Uru. I played through most of the beta, had some great times, and then was forced away from Uru by Real World concerns.

Now I'm thinking about buying into the "real" Uru.

I enjoyed Uru the most during the early beta days, when a few of us could get together and kick cones around in the city. By the time I left the beta in early November, I'd solved Uru "prime" several times -- and the city was mostly unplayable due to various lag issues.

I've been reading the forums, and wonder if there's any point to buying Uru right now. The "rpime" game appears to be identical to last year's beta, so there's not much fund in redoing all of that. And Uru Live sounds as if it is still being tested.

Have any new Ages been added?

How many of the old bets are still hanging around? I've seen Zardoz, Dr. Greeg, and Khatie; anyone else?

WB - sorry to hear you say this. We are having fun in bunches and spurts. Hard to keep a smile though when you have to hammer to get in. There is a really good group of folks here. Hope you stick around. Look me up if you do decide to.

Heya ChaoticCoyote.

In my opinion, there's nothing here worth paying for. Keep a watch on the forums (as am I) and if they ever do get the major issues worked out and officially launch live, there will surely be some new ages to explore.

Until then - the whole "marker" chase is insulting and pointless.

Ah, ChaoticCoyote, I was actually wondering where you had gone. This thread will no doubt quickly degenerate into a pointless flame war, so let's get to the point.

Given you've experienced most everything in the beta, it probably is a good bet to wait awhile. There is some added material, which apparently does not appeal to ronsolo, but you can make up your own mind whether it's worth spending $50 or $30 or whatever the price is these days. Right now, Uru is mostly a potential game and an increasingly restless community, getting nastier by the second.

Ugh. I've noticed the other flame wars in these forums, and precious little enthusiasm.

To anyone who's pissed at Uru/Ubi/Cyan: Your message is loud and clear. I'm just looking to reconnect with some friends I'd made during the "real" beta. So no sense in flogging this thread too much, okay?

Too bad; Uru has such amazing potential. I've been through this before with games; it all seems so familiar. The Star Fleet Command games were released with some bugs and broken online support; the troubles badly hurt an otherwise fine game series. I hope Uru fares better.

Well, I may pick up a copy of Uru this week anyway; one of my insane clients actually paid me, and I don't see any other games that strike my fancy. At least I know I haven't missed much while I was away! http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_wink.gif

We've missed you and I was thinking of dropping you a line to see how you've been! How's the bizness? I still remember some of your stories of your family and you during the beta. http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif

Nice to see you back!

Great to see you around again ChaoticCoyote -- I'd say wait for a while, but hopefully see you back again sometime.

Never got to hang out with you much -- I was one of those silent people who was just into finding more bugs.

CC!!!!! Welcome back!

Yep, a bunch of us are still here....tough old birds, I guess, hehehe.

There's a bit more added, but it's still basically beta, just public now. Lots of problems, but solutions are showing up, too. If you do get the game...GREAT! If you decide to wait...PLEASE, at least join in the forums. You've been missed. http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_wink.gif

One more voice of reason is always welcome on this board, CC. Glad to have you.

like the expression "surly people".
maybe some forgot, that the surly ones are supposed to be happy ones. the ones that receive information, are kept up to date instead of being left in the dark. humans need light to survive...

Glad to see ya back! I've personally taken a break from active Uru playing because of concerns up on the surface as well the server issues. I'd keep a keen eye on this and the DRC forums starting today. It's looks like the DRC (both game characters and Cyan "in character") may be up to something per a thread on the DRC forums.

I have a good feeling they may have some issues worked out and when they do I will actively start posting to my Uru Journal in my sig.

You're a very positive voice and very knowledgeable about programming issues and like Jerle I enjoyed your stories as well. Glad to have you back. Hope to see you in the cavern soon!

Wow. I hadn't known I was missed! I think I'll find a copy of Uru this week, and get back into this. I always enjoyed the people more than the game, anyway.

I noted the same message last night -- something about a meeting of "everyone." It could be an internal pep-talk at Cyan, or it might be an important announcement in the offing.

The local CompUSA has Uru in the best-selling games section, and that they appear to have sold a lot of copies.

Guess you were. http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_smile.gif Nice to find out something like that, isn't it. Hope you do get a copy. I've been ragging Maztec to come and meet me. So far he hasn't picked up the gauntlet. http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/images/smiley/16x16_smiley-wink.gif Mind you, he is pretty busy here. Check his post count - whew, pretty high. http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/images/smiley/16x16_smiley-very-happy.gif Are you game ChaoticCoyote? http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/images/smiley/16x16_smiley-wink.gif

Some of us are actually enjoying the game despite what the noisy people may be saying. Good point, if they're here making noise, they probably aren't in game, enjoying the wonderful collective groups I've made. Some pretty intelligent folks willing to lend a hand to a not-so-informed computer user. Well worth my time IMHO. C U if you want.

Koru from beta here. I'm stil around and complaining about the lag as I was last year during the first beta testing cycle. This prolog is simply a more occupied beta test as far as I can see.

Hi all. I have only posted to the forum once, but I would like to put my wo cents in. CC I hope you do buy the game. I LOVE the lag, the marker chase ( as others have called it) capture the cones would have been fun if I could have gotten on line(I was out of town that weekend), playing Heek is fun, I haven't gotten into the city yet still trying. Gosh I love URU, I'm a die hard fan and always will be. I know when all the "bugs" and "Lag" troubles are worked out this will be the GREATEST GAME EVER. So do join in!

BTW on Live I'm Aya, don't know my KI
