I am taking time out of an immersive experience like none I've ever had before on a computer to tell you, my URU friends, about it.

This week Best Buy has a sale on NEC LCD1765 17" monitors that I've been waiting for. It has gotten excellent reviews, had a great picture in the store and is very stylish. I also bought the 10th Anniversary DVD Edition of Myst that has Myst, Riven and Exile.

All I can say is OMG!!!! The beauty of Uru and Exile is unbelievable! I have a 17" CRT monitor, so it isn't the size that grabs me, it is the unexcelled beauty of the color gradations. It's a whole new experience! I can't wait to try Riven and Myst.

If you've been thinking of a monitor upgrade, do it. It's worth every penny. I'm using a Radeon 9600 AIW which I already had.

Cyan/UBi all is forgiven. Cyan, thank you, thank you, thank you for the wonderful games you've given me that I can now view in all their glory!

I'll get an LCD monitor when I can get one as good as the one on my laptop.

1680x1050 is what I'm looking for. I wonder why they dont' try to sell them seperatley. I don't want another laptop. I want the nice and crispy resolution.

what resolution does the NEC LCD1765 17" do (he typed as he headed to bestbuy.com)

1280x1024 ... close, too bad I don't havet $500 lying around

I have a VG800 from ViewSonic and I agree with you about the LCD monitors. When I've compared the picture to my previous CRT monitor...well, there was no comparison. The beauty that's in the 10th Anniversary Edition is only enhanced.
I know there are purest who say CRT's are best but I really like the flat screen. I will have to check out NEC's. Not in the market now but I like to look.

I have a flat screen 19" ViewSonic A90f monitor.

AS I do a LOT of graphic work, this was the monitor of choice.

Yes monitors do make a BIG difference in the immersion experience.

I love mine. I am currently running it at 1600x1280. Uru was awesome at that res.

Dillinger69, this NEC does all six resolutions on the slider from 800 x 600 to 1280 x 1024 and it recommends using it on the highest setting, which looks great in games but makes my icons itty bitty, so I'm using 1024 x 768. Some of the in between resolutions elongate the images.

Dara, Dill's point was that many of us like 1600x1200 resolution at least http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_wink.gif

1280x1024 is way too big on a screen of over 15" in my personal opinion.

Yes, maztec, I understood his answer, but thought I would answer the question he asked as others may want to know. I do not do a lot of graphic work but I do have a large game collection.

To each his own.

Dara, definitely http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_smile.gif I have a 19" LCD 1600x1200 because I love LCD's. Took a lot to find oen with a high enough color depth and white/black ratio to satisfy me though <g>

I'm a big fan of itty bitty icons. most people can't read my screen.

I run most games in 1400x1050 (or 1480 ... I forget) right now because my current monitor only does 60hz at 1600x1200.

An LCD would eliminate the refresh flicker, but the ones I want all cost too much so far http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif

I have heard that FPS's running with high frame rates have problems with LCD screens. CRT's are supposed to be The Thing for high frame rates.

Anyone have first hand experience?

Dell FP2001 is excellent. I suggest you look into it, and more to come based on the LG/Philips panels.

Full 24bit colour, 19" @ 1600x1200, with a 16ms rise/fall time.

To translate, excellent for gaming, graphics design and all around excellent image quality http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

Thats a full 19"es too, and not the 18.1 the "19 inch" CRT's give you.

Last time I checked this monitor in specific is $1500CDN from Dell

I have a similar flat panel monitor, and use it at the highest, it's awesome!! . . .you can go into your display in windows control panel and increase the size of your icons, task bars and fonts etc. if that is a problem, that's what I did, and it looks nice and still has reasonable size icons http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/images/smiley/16x16_smiley-very-happy.gif

I've been using an 18.1" NEC LCD for a few years now -- it's on its third computer. Have used it extensively for gaming and been very happy with it... though I don't play the real "twitch games" which rely on ultra frame rates. I tend to go for games which favor detail over speed. So possibly there are apps where you would get ghosting.

Dara100 commented about certain resolutions elongating images.
Note that 800*600, 1024*768, 1600*1200 all have the same aspect ratio - 4 * 3. 1280 by 1024 doesn't. It's 5 * 4. To maintain the same aspect ratio, the setting should be 1280 * 960.

I know that quality is a trade-off between resolution and size but I wonder what URU looks like on a projector with a picture big enough to include peripheral vision.

Has anyone tried it?

And then combine that with 3D from another thread. I can imagine it being quite immersive http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/images/smiley/blink.gif

Unfortunatley, Uru only supports 4:3 aspect ratios.
16:9 or other aspect ratios make things look all funky.

My goal is to get my home theater projector by the end of the year. I'll be playing Uru on it once it's in place http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif

I have been using a 52" plasma for the last year and games look VERY nice. URU looks great altho it's probably stretched a little odd because of the 16:9 ratio. After a while you don't really notice.

I'm still using the monitor my bro gave me to go with the computer I bought from him in 1996.

It's not a bad monitor though. It's a 17" Dell 1028L, he got it with his new computer, but he already had a 19".

I have a big problem with LCDs. I do a lot of photography, and I can tell you nothing is worse than editing a photo to the way you think it should look, only to find out that you were sitting a little low or high in the chair, and now your histogram is all screwed up. Also, they are a pain to work with when you are trying to help another person out. They can never see exactly what you see on the same screen.

I will remain CRT until they don't make them anymore, or they come out with something better than LCD.

Oh yeah, Current resolution: 1028x764. I would go higher, but the game chokes at anything higher due to my old AMD Duron 1.3ghz proc.

I wouldn't mind a monitor that could do higher res's, but as it sits I would also need to replace my CPU. Somehow I just can't afford either of those right now.

I'm looking forward to using one of the new 3D LCD monitors they've developed... as soon as they become wide-spread enough that I can try one at my local geek supplier.

I'm currently using dual monitors: NEC LCD and an NEC CRT, both 17"

Methinks therefore me is

I think the resolution evolved as the monitor did. 14" monitor, VGA, 640*480 (4:3). 15" monitor, SVGA, 800*600 (4:3). 17" monitor, XVGA, 1024*768 (4:3). 19" monitor, ?, 1280*960 (4:3), SXVGA, 1280*1024 (5:4), UXGA, 1600*1200 (4:3).
You can of course run at other resolutions, but up to a 19" monitor you'll probably find that the most comfortable ones are those here.

Picked for use with the Dell XPS...already slightly frankensteined with an older 40Gig HD...

I tried at higher rez when I first got it, but just couldn't see everything, particularly text, well enough. I'm very nearsighted. http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/images/smiley/16x16_smiley-tongue.gif Selecting for big icons and pointers was NOT enough. I'm bordering on legally blind, here.

And I think the LCDs are spiffy on the outside, but don't like the color yet. I like to 'paint' my drawings on the compy and I agree with Belboz -- the color is hinky and changes too much with viewing angle. http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/images/smiley/16x16_smiley-indifferent.gif

My nine 21" Sony CRT monitors set-up as a video wall really provide an immersive experience. I run a resolution of 100x75, and the 4 pixels I can see look breathtaking.
