You have to lock the bandit up first. Press 2 for BVR and search for them with your radar. When you find them try to lock them with the tab button I think (I use a X45 and don't remember what button does what http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_smile.gif). Once you lock them up you have to wait for the LA to appear on the HUD, then at that point you can fire away. Hope that helps you out.

Doesn't TAB just cycle targets?
I think ScrLk (Scroll Lock) looks them up if you use the keyboard, then TAB cycles. I think! http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/images/smiley/16x16_smiley-wink.gif

Tab locks targets not scroll lock! It seems to me that the original poster has problems because he doesnt use the right radar mode(he's probobly stuck in nav mode).
You first need to choose the right radar mode. If the target is BVR (beyond visual range) the you use BVR mode (2 on the keyboard). If he is close you have a number of radar modes you can use. Without getting into specifics (diffrent modes for diffrent planes) they are 3,4 and 5 on the keyboard. Once you lock the target you need to wait for the LA-lanch authorisation(spellin?!) and ,then, fire the missile. Repeat if nesessery. http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/images/smiley/59.gif

Anythingyoulike,
What no one has yet mentioned is that, in BVR especially, you can get a radar return on a target long before you can lock the target.
Assuming this is a BVR encounter, first switch to BVR radar mode by pressing the "2" key. Next, if necessary, extend or compress the radar range using the "-" and "+" keys respectively. The third step, once you see a return, is to move the targeting box over it using the ";" "." "," and "/" keys for up, down, left, and right respectively.
Press the TAB key to attempt to lock. It will probably be unsuccessful unless the target you are designating is already fairly close. Now comes the nerve wracking aprt. Keep moving the targeting box in time with the target trace and pressing TAB--all the while praying that your reach is longer than his. Once he is in range to lock, pressing TAB will lock him.
You will know he is locked because a range scale (on the good jets, at least) will appear on the left side of the HUD. The upper heavy range tick is the max range, while the lower tick mark is the min range. Once the range arrow hits the max range mark, you will get launch authorization. From then on, that particular type of weapon will fire. As you cycle throughthe A2A ordnance, you'll see that each has it's own min and max ranges.
Happy hunting,
Rich

I should mention Russian aircraft have two "radar" displays, one is the MFD in the lower right, the other is the HUD. If there is an A-50 or an EWR of the same nationality as the player, there will be a datalink from the A-50 or EWR transmitting the contacts of the long distance radar to the MFD. So a contact in the MFD is not neccesarily one of your radar contacts.
You cannot target datalink contacts. You need to find the corrosponding bar in the display on the HUD, and it may be neccesary to point the radar up or down to make it appear. Then move the target designator as Ironhand described.
Also, as Ironhand mentioned, aircraft can't be locked at the extreme range of radar detection; currently the lock range is 65% of max range, so your contact will travel down the screen quite a bit before you can lock. Lock range will increase to 85% in the 1.02 patch.
