Game hangs loading observer mode

Here's the problem: Rainbow Six 3 will hang whenever I try to play any SP game in observer mode. The screen will go black and stay black, and a hard reset is needed to get the computer working again. At first I thought this was a bad install issue, but I've moved to a new hard drive and the problem persists.

Specs:
R63 fully patched
Radeon 9600 AIW 128MB, latest catalyst
768MB Ram
ASUS A7N8X Deluxe
Athlon XP 2700
XP Pro SP1, fully patched
DirectX 9.0b

I have exatly the same problem on a very similar setup. Does anyone know what the problem might be?
