I copied this from another thread because it's something I've been thinking about as well.

I think this line is part tongue in cheek from the developers and part an understanding of Farah's. I think Farah knew that eventually the dagger would reset time. She knew that everything they did, the fighting and struggling, was, sadly, meaningless. It was a game to her, to stay alive long enough to get to the end. Maybe she allowed herself to care for the Prince for this same reason. It was her opportunity to follow a path she never would have thought of taking. I think her sacrifice, to let go of the dagger, was very meaningful because she trusted the Prince to finish their task. She made a choice of saving everyone from the Sands of Time over her love for the Prince, trusting that they would somehow meet again.

Okay, I think I'm going to put the game down for a while because I've been playing it and pondering it way too much. But I love it! Any other thoughts?

very very good!!!

But you might want to put in the title that there are spoilers in this thread because that part about her letting go of the dagger is a bit of a spoiler.

I like your thoughts on this. I personally feel that it really was an innocent joke from the developers, but your opinion really intrigues me, as it's quite thought-provoking.

But it wasn't *so* meaningless -- I mean, they struggled so that they *would* be able to go back...but I don't think the prince knew this for real. He was just going because, for one, he had the impetus of wanting to kill the Vizier, and Farah seemed to know what she was doing so he kind of had to follow her, though I think throughout the game he felt he was the leader of the pair.

For me, when she let go of the dagger it was so incredibly emotional -- it showed how she loved him so much she would sacrifice her life so as to release him from the pain of holding on to the blade. It was just...amazing...there's so much to say about this game and that particular scene.

The only thing I didn't like was his blood was pink. lol

(oops, thanks, I changed the title)

Yes! You're right, it wasn't meaningless for them to struggle. I like thinking about the characters reasons for doing stuff, even the unspoken motivations, and I like your thoughts on this.

Lol! I forgot about his blood! Maybe the glow from the Hourglass made the blood color change.

(Or, the developers didn't want to get an R rating, or something like that, and so his blood is pink! Like how aliens on TV or movies have pink or green blood. We live in a weird culture.)

Thanks!

Interesting thread. What about that verse she read to him just BEFORE she said "It's not that kind of game?"

It was something about love and death...

Unfortunately, I don't have a save at that point anymore so I can't go back and hear exactly what it was right now.

I'll write it down the second time around (because I am that pathetic.)

I remember the second part of the verse went something like this:

"To die in love"

Foreshadowing, hmm? Farah died in love...

Thanks to you both for the recording and the script!!

(Augh, choke me in the shallow waters before I get too deep! But, here goes...)

I think I see the foreshadowing a lot better now. When the Vizier temps him with eternal life, the Prince doesn't want to live without the people he loves. So, he follows what Farah wanted, and follows his heart, and plunges the dagger into the hourglass, unsure of the outcome. This is a very different action from the Prince we see at the begining who wanted to plunge the dagger into the Vizier's heart.

Maybe she's saying life is a game, a variety of events to deal with and learn from. And, we all need to make love a priority, to die in love, to get through it. Hmmm.

Cool, thanks Ershadi_choice.

And, if anyone out there does help aN-online.db with the walkthrough (would that make it a "Pop Video"? /i/smilies/16x16_smiley-tongue.gif ), which I think is a great idea, try to leave in some of the dialog and emotional stuff, too, if you could. Figuring out how to get to point B from point A has been a lot of fun, and seeing it as a whole movie would be cool, but figuring out, as Farah would say, what kind of game this is, is why I'm obsessed with this game and not doing my work!! /i/smilies/16x16_smiley-very-happy.gif

First time poster ^_^

i actually just finished the game, and i was so totally blown, that i simply had to share my feelings (despite having many finals to study for :P).

I thought the game was great, and the puzzles were all fun (not really that hard, but fun). Only thing about that is i really enjoyed the old PoPs for making you do a string of things correctly, because the ground was falling or the like. there wasn't enough of that in sands of time

it really turned out to be a tragic love story T_T makes me sooo sad. but u gotta love how the prince goes for the kiss, then rewinds time after she yells at him. LOL i was on the floor. such witty writers.

anyway, i am really interested in helping with the walkthrough. Honestly, i was considering capturing it all, or at least the really cool scenes, anyway. what is the best way? can the PC version capture video as it goes? i'm currently using my friends xbox, and am thinking about getting the PC version for myself. i guess i could hook up the xbox to my tv card, but the quality isn't that great...

Thanks for your input, rossic! Maybe someone could start a thread on the general discussion board on creating a walkthough and how to do it, equipment needed, video capture software, etc. I think you're right, a PC will help you do this, but it's mostly a mystery to me.

Although I wanted the Prince and Farah to get rewarded for their struggles by being with each other, I loved the tragic ending because it was an expected departure from the previous stories. I loved the kiss, too! Yeah, that Prince was lucky...he got to kiss her and still leave looking like a good guy!

I love the personal touches that went into this game...like if you go over and whack farah with your sword..she goes..."thats not funny" cracks me up..sometimes I just do it, to do it...specially after she dies in a fight or something..kinda like payback...and the part when she says.."dont leave me, my love" tears...*choke*

I love this game...simply love it...see the commercials for it all the time...omg...it was even in the tv guide this week...can you believe it! and madden won for game of the year....crap!

I did a written walkthrough, wasnt easy..but im also playing on ps2.

Interesting point but maybe you're looking at it a little too deeply?

This is the point of the conversation I found funny.

Prince:
"If you want to be useful try finding a book that will tell us how to get out of here!"

Farah:
"This isn't THAT kind of game"

If any of you played the original Myst game where you get into and out of worlds using books, I sure thought the developers were poking fun at us gamers with that line... I know I burst out laughing after hearing that.

XyZspineZyX
12-11-2003, 10:02 PM
Lol!! OMG, that makes total sense! Like, it's a reference to the Myst linking books (and they're in a huge library). Why didn't I see that? (Ans: I'm sappy) And I love Myst. How funny! Maybe it was all that talk about love that threw me, but still! Oh, well. In my heart, that line will still have a double meaning (or a triple or quadruple meaning). Thanks zeddic!

And I love the little touches in the game, too. I'm sure this has been mentioned elsewhere, but I remember running to the other end of the hall during the fight with the Sand King and Farah yells, "hey, wait for me!". Or, when I first tried to get over the gate to the zoo, I climbed down the wrong side and Farah asked, "Why didn't you open the gate?" She almost got a sword slash for that remark.

XyZspineZyX
12-12-2003, 04:42 AM
LMAO Zed, thanks for your two cents! I spent hours playing the original Myst back when it first came out but it didn't occur to me that those lines could have (and very well may have) been poking fun at that game. Now that you mention it, though, it seems obvious! That's really funny! /i/smilies/16x16_woman-wink.gif All those books with the red pages and the blue pages and so on and so forth... I think there were green pages, too? *shrugs*

Umwhateverdude, I'm with you, though. That line has SO many meanings for me, too. I also like the banter in the game. There was one part (I forget exactly where) in the game when you had to pull a switch that opened a door but also activated a lot of traps. There are quite a few of these throughout the game, but I was having trouble with this one. I got through all the traps just in time to have the door close in my face, and to hear Farah, who was on the other side, say, "Oh, no! Now you have to do it all over again!" So I ran back through the traps and pulled the switch again and ran to the door, once again to have it close in my face. The prince said something along the lines of, "DON'T even think about saying anything!" I thought it was hilarious! /i/smilies/16x16_woman-very-happy.gif

XyZspineZyX
12-13-2003, 02:00 AM
/i/smilies/16x16_smiley-very-happy.gif Now, that is funny, Jennelle! You must have been sooo frusterated to have that damn door close on you like that -- and more than once! Grr! I'm glad the Prince has the ability to recognize that Farah tends to point out the obvious, sometimes in a cute way and a lot of times in an annoying way! One of my favorite exchanges is after the broken bridge, where the Prince is risking life and limb to get to a balcony and she's casually strolling around, probably doing her nails, or something. But he deserves the abuse he gets...that remark in the zoo, "Can't you just crawl through a crack or something!" always makes me smile at his conceitedness.

To get back to the topic, I guess this IS the kind of game that's about memorable dialog, which is great since we never got any in the previous games (not sure about POP 3D -- never played it). I've been really enjoying everyone's input!

XyZspineZyX
12-13-2003, 06:11 AM
Yeah, it REALLY bit when that door kept closing on me, and Farah was narrating my failure for me. I'm glad the prince said something back to her, because having the door slam in my face was agitating enough without her little commentary at that point in time, so the comic relief kept me from throwing my controller at the TV! /i/smilies/16x16_woman-wink.gif

I like reading about what other people got out of the game, too! Some people would accuse us of over analyzing, but hey, the game is what you make it, right? Plus, and lot of hard work and thought went into this game, and the story is creative, so I don't really see anything wrong with letting the gameplay inspire your imagination!

If I had to pick a favorite exchange, I think it would have to be the one that occurs about halfway through the game when the prince and Farah get separated and he can't quite make it to where she is so she asks him to meet her at the baths.

He agrees, but once he is out of her earshot, he starts in with something to the effect of:

"Meet me at the baths! Oh, okay. I'll just ask directions from the first sand creature I run into! 'Excuse me, could you tell me the way to the baths?' 'Sure, I'll give you directions.' 'Thanks!' 'Don't mention it! I was an attendant in the baths when I was still alive!' ...Wait, WHY am I talking to myself?!"

I laughed and laughed.

Not only is the dialogue memorable, but I think the voice acting is great! It can really spoil things if the voice acting is bad, so I'm glad the actors put enough feeling into their lines to make them sound authentic!

XyZspineZyX
12-13-2003, 07:01 AM
Oh yes, Jennelle! That part was truly hilarious!! I really love long-lasting comments like that, how he kept talking and talking for a long time -- in fact, he didn't stop talking to himself until I took a wrong jump off a pole and fell to my death, lol!

this is a little off topic, but I've got a question... or maybe more of a being picky moment. I loved the story, and it got me totally emotionally overwhelmed, which made me mad to see dumb things happen, like:

when the prince is falling into prison... ok, is it just me or is this game based mainly on time control... hit the switch, moron.

and also, the part that really made me upset was when farah is just starting to fall to her doom. she goes for the dagger, and slides into the hole, with one hand on the dagger, and the other holding the edge. now... i'm pretty sure she climbed a few ledges throughout the game, just by grabbing on to a ledge, and lifting herself up. why can't she a)let go of the dagger, then b) pull herself up? i got mad seeing that. everything would have been fine T_T

and finally, the whole time he's telling farah the story, right? so, when he's telling her the story of when the future farah said "my secret word is kakolukia (sp?)" why didn't she just believe him then, and why was it a suprise that he said "just call me 'kakolukia'"? i don't get it...

sorry for being picky... i just wanted the happy ending between those two. All i can hope for is that the prince goes back to his father and says "instead of attacking let me marry the princess" and then happily ever after...

- in fact, he didn't stop talking to himself until I took
- a wrong jump off a pole and fell to my death, lol!

Well, Ershadi, I guess that's one way to get him to shut up! "Don't mention it! I was an attendant in the baths when --- AAAAUUUGH!" *splat* LMAO

- when the prince is falling into prison... ok, is it
- just me or is this game based mainly on time
- control... hit the switch, moron.

OMG, Rossic, I can't believe that never occurred to me! Now that you mention it, though, it does seem pretty stupid that he didn't use the dagger, hmm?

- and finally, the whole time he's telling farah the
- story, right? so, when he's telling her the story
- of when the future farah said "my secret word is
- kakolukia (sp?)" why didn't she just believe him
- then, and why was it a suprise that he said "just
- call me 'kakolukia'"? i don't get it...

Wow, Rossic, I asked the EXACT same question in another thread on this board! I'm glad I'm not the only person who was slightly annoyed by that (seemingly) inconsistent ending. However, when I brought it up, someone said to me, "Well, maybe he just left that part out. After all, he did make a few nasty comments about the princess to himself when she couldn't hear and I doubt he told her that part, either!"

I can buy that, but the part about the bridge collapsing and not using the dagger, now that IS weak! While I never thought of that, I always wondered why that fall didn't kill him. I mean, if the prince had fallen that far under the player's control, he DEFINITELY would have died, so what gives? /i/smilies/16x16_woman-wink.gif

XyZspineZyX

You're all making great points! Lol! I would love to see a sequel, too!

I love the voice effects. Like, if Farah's indoors, her voice sounds "echoey". BUT, quickly zoom in to 1st person perspective while she's talking and her voice gets much closer and louder. My question is: Does the Doppler Effect happen if the Prince is talking and falling? /i/smilies/16x16_smiley-wink.gif

So, my interpretation of the prison fall is he hits a ledge or two on the way down, which slows him enough without killing him. (Um, yeah...) What would have made a little more sense is if the fall was a short one, BUT he dropped the dagger and then got hit by a rock.

I've got another annoyance. At the beginning of the fight with his father, the Prince calls to Farah and does this really cool vertical wall slide. There are SO many rooms that would have been so easy to get though if the player really had that move!

Hmmm, maybe Farah was panicking and her sweaty hands prevented her from gripping and jumping up the ledge? KINDA explains using the dagger to get a better grip. Maybe? Welll, no matter how implausible, whenever something doesn't make any sense, I just try to remind myself that its emotion that keeps people interested, not necessarily logic. Although, it helps to make it believable, hello UBIsoft!

Maybe, as the Prince told the story, he was trying to engage Farah, to get an emotional response. He certainly got one from us! He must have left out the secret word to the end because he didn't think he had to convince her, until she practically called his story childish, just like he did to her. But he definitely left out the mundane parts. Can you imagine him saying, "so, I had to reverse time, like, a hundred times because those guys with the big swords kept killing me!" /i/smilies/16x16_smiley-happy.gif

lol... very true. and also, your point about how he slides down the column before the sand king fight is a good one. you'd think that the prince should have that as one of his abilities. i mean... running up a wall like he does is just as hard to do (i imagine)

XyZspineZyX
12-18-2003, 10:41 PM
I know! And that wall running looks so cool. I've noticed there's other games out there that have the same move, but I'll always think the Prince does it best.

He has another amazing ability: The Prince can run around for hours, fight a ton of creepy monsters, drink gallons of water, and not take one pee break! Wow!

Yeah. i agree with all. Nearly screamed in agony when i saw the end and they didnt got eachother.I demand a sequel. hey! Ubisoft! Can we get a statement here? hello? hello?.

Lol! If I was in the game, my "standing still animation" wouldn't be dusting off my pants, it'd be panting for breath and collapsing onto the floor!

Totally! I'm so glad people are talking about sequels because I so want to see what happens next! How will they cross paths? Will the Dagger of Time be involved again? Maybe this time, the Prince will have to permanently live with his mistakes, i.e. releasing the sands, and that kiss!
