View Full Version : The only way to truly fix ravenshield is to patch the unreal engine to the current optimized version

All the problems ravenshield are having are tied to netcode and FPS. These two issue are due to the fact that ravenshield uses a very old build of the unreal engine. The engin is the foundation of this game. Build a game on a bad foundation and it will have problems not matter what you do. If UBI can patch the engine to the current build it will make a huge difference. Raven shield uses build 927 (i beleive) while the current build is two thousand something. I have played the new unreal game using the current build and its rock solid in FPS and netcode.

they said they would have to pay more to update or patch it again more with "cheap" issue, if you ask me.

Price out the cost of a license from Epic for the Unreal engine, Transient and then come tell me how "cheap" it is, alright?

So UBI would have to pay for a patch to the unreal engine? Since UBi got the engine when unreal game was a beta i feel Epic should at least give UBI a free patch that would bring the unreal engine to a non beta state. Its not fair to have ubi pay for a beta version and not get a patch.

k wit says he didnt remove the post I posted last night so I'll restate what I know i posted last night.
BTW I do defend this company, and I can state that I OWN EVERY CLANCY TITLE EVER PRODUCED FOR THE PC. Also, for those in the "tarded" state I now have 3 copies of rvs.
While I agree that updating the engine probably aint cheap, its still gotta be cheaper than rebuilding a five year old community.
When I say cheap I mean:
You ever play Splinter Cell for pc? You know no matter what you pick up its sounds like an empty beer can? Thats cheap to me, sounds like cost cutting cheapness.
ou ever notice how all ops are the same pathetically small size? Thats cheap.
ts cheap that all opps speak in american english no matter where they are from. Theres like 2-3 dofferent voices of both genders.
Its cheap that theres only like 6 orignal maps in sp.
Its cheap that I can no longer pick all the options in the game like unis.
Its cheap that I cant pick my ops fate with respect to being tkd in game, why cant I pick my fate, rather than some crackhead? Thats pathetically cheap.
Are there more options or less than RS/UO?
etc, etc
Again Ill still get Athena Sword, and probably get Pandora Tomarrow, but man after that who knows. Maybe Ubi should licsene this game out like the did for Operation Takedown, do you have that game? Probably not since it was never sold in the US. Anyway, the company Kama Digital did a real good job with that game, didnt seem to have a problem focusing on the game .
Call me psycho, and thats ok cause at least I know Iam not perfect but is it just me or does it seem Ubi just think that well theres a bunch of people who like this game theyll prolly buy it anyway just get it out the door any concentrate on Splinter Cell.
Again I dont hate Ubisoft, but if youd like to have me be your customer you need to do more as far as bettter quality in the games.

That's correct. The license they have is for Unreal build number 927 only. Anything beyond that, Ubi pays for.

Dear Ubisoft,
I have two propositions for you, and I can nearly gaurantee one is going to have to happen:
"Entire community hating you and never buying your games again."
OR
"Paying for a better version of the unreal engine so the community loves you and continue to buy your games."
Hmm. Toughie, eh? I mean, come on. You'll be losing more money if a large community just gets up and ignores you for the rest of eternity, than if you put out the money to make them happy. You'll pay some now, but people will actually buy Ubisoft games.
As far as I can tell, an upgraded version of the unreal engine would NOT cost more than what you'd get from about 10000+ people buying your games and expansion packs.
Now, I'm no economist or whatever, but I know simple business sense. You put down some extra money to make your customers happy, they will buy more from you.
Take this into consideration- Your future income may depend on this.

More than likely neither will occur. The majority of consumers who have purchased these games will still buy their games regardless of how the drama unfolds with RvS. The vast majority of players aren't entusiasts like us; the ratio of single player people to multi is still 3:1 for Raven Shield. They're the biggest part of the fan base and most of the junk that bothers us doesn't even happen to them. They're almost completely unaffected and many never even patch the game...

they need to list that on the boxes when people buy the game, they would know .......... naw thats like an admission of incompetence. Still communicate that check online for support might be of help. Seems like you want to let the customers know there is alot online.
Did they ask what it would cost upgrade the engine befroe they bought it, maybe shop around a little, who knows. Look at COD, it plays good till you see the guys jump OMG thats totally realistic. Whats the thought proceess for decideding to build your engine or buy someone elses?

Have you thought of the oppurtunity cost of fixing the mplayer though? Perhaps a nice fast, almost buggy free mplayer will even out that ratio? Perhaps bring it down to 2:1?

No it won't even it out. Besides, UBI now has the CryTek engine and will probably be using that in future games since it was developed in house. From a business stand point, we will never see a newer build of Epic's engine in RvS.

Do any of you feel screwed like me - I bought the game because of a promised R6-style game and expected the promise on the back of the box to hold true.
UBISOFT please respond to this and let us know what you meant on the back of the box when you promised:
"Feel the force of combat powered by the latest UNREAL technology."
Seems to me like you have pulled a bait and switch.

Once again I must quote UBI's own promise to gameholders:
"Feel the force of combat powered by the latest UNREAL technology"
This is on the box (check the back) - notice it does not say "Feel the force of combat powered by the latest UNREAL technology that we felt was profitable" or "Feel the force of combat powered by an old build of the Unreal engine"

At the time, it was the newest build.
Build 927 was the first commercial release of the Unreal "Warfare" engine. Considering AA:O was using the same build, and that Unreal 2k3 wasn't even released yet, it was the lastest Unreal Engine AT THE TIME.
Ubisoft cannot change what happens after they print everything up.

My bad then - I guess UBI should have written it this way:
"Feel the force of combat powered by Build 927 of the Unreal Engine, even though this engine will be obsolete by the time the game goes to market, and we will not be patching it ever to the latest build"

1) For UBISoft's "biggest online game" it sure seems like they dont give a crap about it
2) Cry Tek Engine? They can't even MOD an engine they licenced, how the hell do you expect them to code their own and make it work?

Couldn't agree with you more - especially since unreal scripting makes things such a breeze.
Question to devs - will Rainbow Six Four be using the same build 927 of Unreal, or will you pony up and purchase a current license? (this is a very hypothetical question based on a pretty big assumption that the R6 community will still be around after AS is released)

Look at it this way. These forums are for people that need to complain. Nothing of your suggestions will happen, simply because Tom Clancy is on the Yaght we all paid for, and doesn't give a rat's *** about what we all think. HE'S on the yaght. WE'RE here. IF he looks at these forums and sees around 200 peeps are not happy, he'll be happy. It means 600 are happy or unaffected. I say leave the Unreal Engine alone. It sux. On the next Rainbow serie (or next stand alone game) use a different engine, which they can update.

Here goes - I have to get this off my chest!
Where is the replay ability ? Where is the 3rd person/2nd person view ability ?
When I 1st purchased Rainbow6 I thought how unique it was compared to all the other run around shoot anything stuff that was available. So I purchased game after game thinking these guys and gals would just not build intricate maps but would add some more unique features - I was a fool as it seems they did not add but took away the only parts that I felt made it playable (as a single player game that is) so I feeel robbed and surely I am and although the Unreal engine has added some crispness to the imagery the lack of integrity with the developers and their evident grasp for a quick dollar will I believe serve only their immediate interests(money) and as the saying goes Once Bitten Twice Shy- they and so many more will financially fail due to this I am sure.
Pity but I suppose this computer industry has been quite corrupted and corruptive since its inception.

Well, uhh legally, that would be false advertising right? So some1 is probably gonna sue them for more than $350,000 US. Best they buy the damn engine and live up to the advertisment http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/images/smiley/16x16_smiley-indifferent.gif

You really should at least research the concept before you start claiming what is and isn't false advertising.
If a company sells a knife and the boxes say it's the sharpest knife ever, then a year down the road someone else makes one sharper, that does not mean the first company has falsely advertised their product. Nor does it mean that they must come and personally sharpen your knife to make it better than the new product sold.
At the time this game shipped, it was based on the latest Unreal Technology. This is not false advertising. They never promised to continually update the game with every new version of Unreal that comes out. Anyone that actually expected that is nothing but a complete fool. There's a copyright date on the box that tells you WHEN the statements were made.
I have a box from TES2: Daggerfall here that advertises itself as "Revolutionary". It's not revolutionary anymore... I want my money back! False Advertising! WAAAH!!
As for the question someone posed about whether or not they'll 'pony up the dough' for a new version of Unreal if they use the engine again, THEY DON'T HAVE A CHOICE. Do you people understand what licensing an engine is? They didn't buy the rights to use it for the rest of eternity. They bought the rights to use it FOR THIS GAME. Any future games they make means they pay Epic another $350k if they want to use the Unreal engine again.

Ok, I've got to say something...
Old rainbow community expected a better and improved version of RS when RvS came out.
The problem is that the game now is more focused on GRAPHICS, NUMBER OF GUNS, AND MAPS.
Alot of useful and cool features had been removed (e.g. breach command key, cover and replay ability) and useless features are been added in (e.g. PILOT mode in MP) So many people as well as me stopped playing SP because it wasn't fun. To get a better sense of realism people now plays MP of the game.

Hello!
I also merely played this game for a few weeks after I bought it. I was very disappointed in the framerate and the network code, and to me, the game definetly feels like a beta.
Doesn't Ubi have several Unreal Engine licenses? They did release Splinter Cell as well, didn't they? They should be on good terms with Epic and thus negotiating for a newer build shouldn't be impossible.
But the last time I visited these forums, it didn't seem like Ubi was doing a good job at all, so maybe they don't care. They already have our money (but they won't get anymore from me, and I didn't buy the mission disk either)!
