Kha'tie,

I'm a big fan of good music. And that little piece on the website is BEAUTIFUL. Any chance of posting the mp3 for the whole piece?

I think that's a lot to ask on the first day... but it doesn't hurt to try. http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_razz.gif

yes, very ambient, for some reason parts of it reminded me of Freelancer. And there are some chords reminiscent of the original Myst.

I loved it, too. http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/images/smiley/16x16_smiley-happy.gif I knew I was gonna be impressed with the soundtrack when I heard Jack Wall was doing it again. I have the Myst III: Exile soundtrack, and all I can say is that Jack really knows how to write music! http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/images/smiley/11.gif I can't wait to hear more!

I thought that it sounded a lot like Exile, although I heard some myst chords too. It sounds good. I heard Peter Gabriel is going to be doing something with Jack Wall for it too.

Hey, from the few small samples of the Revelation music I have heard so far, I have to say I'm really excited about the game's score! It sounds like a hybrid of Robyn's original MYST soundtrack and Jack Wall's EXILE soundtrack... which is totally cool by me

Yes, I'm very happy about Jack Wall doing the music. Honestly, I think that about 1/5 or more of a Myst game is the music. At least it was that way for Exile. Myst music was great, Exile music was awesome, and that trailer music is definitely NOT disappointing, if y'know what I mean. http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

I hope Jack Wall has gotten a bit more into the Myst groove now that he's got one soundtrack under his belt. I love the music in Exile, but for general ambience and mood music, it's no match for Riven's. Exile's soundtrack is MUCH more theatrical, almost to a fault in some places (like the finales, where the music gives away the ending before Saavedro even does anything). I hope that Revelation's will be more of a return to the more subtle form of the Myst and Riven soundtracks.

Riven ROCKS!

Though I love the Gallery Music in Uru, my favorite tracks are The Bahro and Spore Me. The most ambient, I guess.

zepedro - isn't the music on the website just a loop of the first half in the teaser movie, up to where it goes into the dramatic part?

If you have a player that can do loops with crossfades, you could simply extract the soundtrack from the video. Even better, take it from the hi-res version at Uru Obsession - that's in stereo. http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

zepedro, I'm looking into it but you will probably have to wait until the soundtrack is released.

In the meantime, I'll talk to Randomos about hosting a longer piece of this music.

Thank you, sweetie. I hope Randomos authorizes it before the soundtrack is released. After its release will be useless for me, since I'll have to purchase the soundtrack anyway.

I really thoroughly enjoyed the music from all Myst games. It's tough to say which one I enjoy more because the styles are so different.

I though the theatrical mood of Exile fit it perfectly, and I don't think the game would have been quite the same without it. It truly felt epic while I was playing.

At the same time, Robyn Miller's ambient tracks from Myst and Riven had me looking over my shoulder in many places. This was especially true in Riven, because it always felt like Gehn was coming to get you.

Without a doubt, I'm going to buy the Myst Revelation soundtrack. I love Jack Wall's music anyway, so it all works out.

Oh, I love Riven's music. And I know what you mean by the saxophone--especially for the 'Fissure' track. It's so melancholy, yet so beautifully. I love Riven's music almost more than anything else I've heard.

Jack Wall is great, though. Although I agree with Alahmnat--some of Exile's music was a little bit too theatrical, especially the latter ones with Saavedro. And I really would have liked a more peaceful, conclusive credits song in that game--not the singing like was in the intro. Still, the main theme of Amateria is one of my favorite songs ever. So, I'm REALLY looking forward to Revelation's music.

I really like the theme from Amateria, and also "The Airship Chasm" in Voltaic was very haunting. I hope the Revelation music will be a little like Uru's. I really love the Uru music, especially "fall of D'ni", that brought tears to my eyes when I was wondering in that ruined pub http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_frown.gif Oh yeah, I also really love the theme from Rime in RealMyst, not to mention the trailer music.

Hmmmm. I should invest in a Riven and a Myst soundtrack.

I liked that piece of music in Exile that was played in several different areas but in different ways. You know what I'm talking about.
It has 3 notes that are repeated twice and then the third time its the 3 notes but with three more elongated ones.

Anyways....ummm....yeah. You get the idea.

Ze Pedro
04-22-2004, 07:41 PM
Yes. And it looks like those 3 notes are spreading into other games as well.

For me, Riven was the ultimate game so far in the series (though I am not counting URU - that's something related, but different entirely - and for the record, I loved it and felt great sorrow for the loss of live). But as sound tracks go - for me by far the best is the Main Theme from Exile. Closely followed by (somewhat eclectively) by Temple from Riven.

I love most of the Myst games' music. But one theme (I believe it was in Exile) used that typical horror movie goth chant style. Puhleeeeeze. http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_rolleyes.gif That is so "Omen".

LOL

The rest of Exiles' music was great. I think I was thinking of Exiles' main theme, or one of them. It wasn't really related to an Age, more to the overall story. That's what leads me to believe it was a 'main theme'.

It was the only piece that seemed a bit "Hollywood", all the rest felt more personal.

Anyway, as much as I rave about 'visuals' & 'the beauty' of the games, I keep forgetting to point out how much the music in all the games lend So Much to the total experience. They really fit the sceneries so well. And they know just when to cue & sting them perfectly.

When they were designing Myst, they thought the same thing but when they tested it with some music on a whim, they found it added to the experience. So... the music adds to the experience, much like it did in URU.

I could not imagine a Myst game without music ... that would be so weird and certainly take away from the immersion qualities that the music adds to the game.

I think games have had music ever since Mario came to the arcades. Maybe even a little before. (I suppose if you stretch a point, you could consider the rhythmic background sound of Space Invaders to be music of a sort. http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_smile.gif)

Most of the earlier games that I remember used some sort of intro music, occasionally with background music during gameplay. It's funny to recall how tinny and synthetic it all sounded, although coming through a TV speaker might have had something to do with that.

That was one of the neat things about Myst, in that Cyan made a serious effort to create a serious soundtrack that actually supported the adventure. If you haven't watched the "Making of Myst" movie, there's an interesting segment on there in which Robyn explains his concept, and demonstrates how he composed the score.

It's only gotten better since, now that Jack Wall is on the scene, and they've gone to full orchestrations. But it certainly must be said that Robyn's original music was nothing short of excellent, and easily stands on its own as a fine collection of compositions. When you consider that Robyn wore several hats at the time; graphic designer, programmer, world builder, composer/performer, actor, and so on -- you really start to appreciate the genius behind Cyan. Not to slight Rand, of course! http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/images/smiley/16x16_smiley-wink.gif

How are you running games?
How did you play Uru - don't you need to hear people talking and such?
Uru did have quite a lot of music, and no it really hightens the gameplay.

Are you serious???? No sound card? Go buy one, mate!

Hehe its funny that you bring up Mario. As Robyn said in the making of Myst (I'll just quote the whole thing so ppl know what the music idea was about):

<BLOCKQUOTE class="ip-ubbcode-quote"><font size="-1">quote:</font><HR>"We didn't want music interfering with the gameplay, and so we weren't going to put any music in. When we finally did do a couple songs we realised it wasn't an interference; it didn't sound like Super Mario Bros. It seemed to really help the mood of certain places that you were at in the game."
