I've installed Splinter Cell many a time on my computer and each time when the installation finishes i try to play the game and its starts to load and then all the sudden I get an error. Cannot locate CD-ROM is the heading to the error and the message reads: Please insert the correct CD-ROM, select OK and restart the application. Well, I do that and it gives me the same error. Ive even tried putting in all the other discs that came with it and same thing happens. I'm runnin XP with an GeForce FX5200 video card and just downloaded all the latest drivers for all my hardware. I can't figure out the problem. Could someone help me out?

Ok, I notice that you have a DVDRW and CDRW drive. I know SC doesn't like either. Make sure you have CD3 in one of the two drives. If it doesn't work with one, then try the other. If I may ask, where did you obtain the game? I know Fileplanet has it, and so does Creative.

I've tried puttin the cd in both drives, even installing from both drives and still got the same error. I got the game from a store so i dont think its a problem with that, especially since it worked on the system before.

Are the disks scratched? Have you gotten any errors during installation?

the discs are almost like new with no scratches and i dont get any errors whatsoever during installation. its like it recognizes the cd the whole time up until i actually try to start the game then it gives me the error. i know the game works on this comp though cause the demo works fine...

Yeah, it should work on your computer. You said you've already beaten it, or were you referring to the demo? Perhaps you need to get a replacement, the disks may be bad.

If you have a DVD or CD burner and it crashes in both, try using a regular CD-ROM. The copyright protection used on the CD has problems with burners not reading the disks proplerly.

sounds like you have the same problem as me maybe? does the splinter cell screen pop up and then the game just doesnt load and you get a windows error? or does nothing happen at all?
also.. did the game come bundled with anything? Customer support had me try a beta patch for mine that was bundled with creative, though it wasnt made for the creative bundled software, it was made for a different companys bundle. If it is bundled, try giving customer support a call, and maybe they can let you try out a beta patch.

yea it was suggested to me that i should use a reg. cd-rom to play it but i didnt want to have to resort to that cause id have to go buy one, but ill try it.

yeah the splinter cell screen comes up and then the error pops up before anything else. and no i bought the game so it was by itself.

thx for the help if i have some more problems ill post'em, 'preciate it.

do you think unplugging my cdrw and leavin the dvd-rom hooked in will work, having the dvdr act like a cdrom? fi so does it need to be primary or can it stay as slave?cause my dvdrom is just a player not a burner and i dont see why it wouldnt work...
i dunno, i was just thinkin that maybe takin the cdrw out of the loop might help some...?

WhiteKnight77

If the DVD-ROM is the second on the IDE chain, it will have to be set for master and not slave. It may run on a DVD-ROM, but I cant guarentee that that it will. Macrovision's SafeDisk copyright protection is pretty strong and has been known to play hovok with drives both old and new (with games from Ubi, it started with GR AFAIK and has been plaguing gamers for at least 2+ years).

Well, I tried unhooking the cdrw and installing the game on my dvd drive and it gave me the same error, then i tried (still leaving the cdrw out of the loop) making the dvd drive master, still got the same error...I don't know what it doesnt like in my computer but its definitely something and i cant figure it out and its really gettin to me. for now im stuck playing the demo of the game over and over on my comp, see that shows its not the video card or anything cause it can handle the graphics and all that...so i guess its the cdrw and dvd drives or the cds...

seminole432

Alright, So everything thats happened...

I've tried reinstalling drivers for my graphics card trying the latest one, and also rolling them back...
I tried switching the drives around(dvd and cdrw) makin one mast and other slave and takin one out of the loop etc...
I've tried copying the cds and then installing from them and same error...
Ive tried burning the cds onto my HD and installing and I still got the error b/c it asked for the cd when I clicked on the game icon...
I've cleared out the registry of any ubi software stuff and then reinstalling, which didn't help...
I recently had Windows XP Pro on here and then switched the comp over to Home edition. Even then, with XP Pro I had the same problem and then after switching everything over to Home Edition I got stuck back in the same place...

I just don't know what the deal is...

Man...this is frustrating and its been like this for a few months now...

If anyone knows what I could do or knows of another suggestion please help...Thx

You haven't said if you have tried to use a regular CD-ROM like I suggested earlier. Not a DVD-ROM or a CD-R/W like you have but a plain jane model.

See if you can get a LiteOn LTN-526(D/S) (http://www.liteon.com/prod/getProduct.do?xml_id=4_2&menu_id=4_2_7&cid=1_7_1) as described in the provided link.

I am sure this is an issue of copy-protection software.

As illegal users have all those silly stuff removed this kind of software appears to be designed against legal users only. Just get your money back and tell UBI how client-friendly they are.

21st century in multimedia industry. You buy a game that does not run, a music CD which does not play on your player or a game so screwed it is announced later as beta.

Well, this suicidal tactics does not mean you have to be a victim.

And final piece of advice: try to visit a gamecopyworld website and download protection- free executable for splinter cell.

Yes, only 3rd party can help you run a game you legaly purchased. Sad but true.

would it be safe to d/l one of those off of the net, im just curious i dont want to download something that will either be a virus or be pornographic...do you know of a place that i can download the splintercell.exe file for sure without a virus?

I don't have the same problem as you guys. My CDs for SC install and run just fine. I can't imagine how frustrating it is for you to wanting to play a game but cannot because of a technical copy protection issue. I would never drop to illegal means of obtaining it though. That's my personal view. I would rather get a refund for the game. If it came bundled, I would be a pain in UBIs side calling weekly and being more persistant until I got some kind of answer. If I got no answer from that, I would be a PR nightmare for UBI. Only if UBI didn't give a good faith effort to correct or rectify the problem though. Failing all that, I would boycott them. No game is worth being trampled on - IMO.

There is a quote that applies here:

The reasonable man adapts himself to the world; the unreasonable one persists in trying to adapt the world to himself. Therefore all progress depends on the unreasonable man.
-George Bernard Shaw

download it and run a virus scan on it. You can get a free trial from norton, make sure you update the virusscan ahead of time. You cant put a virus on your system withough running it. So downloading it should not be a problem, its just what you or any program does with it after its downloaded
