View Full Version : Bear witness to history...what would you chose ?.

The other morning I was listening to a local radio morning show 97.7 CHOM FM ( www.chom.com (http://www.chom.com) ) and they had this really cool call-in portion that was way too short, they had the general public calling in and replying to the following question:

"If you could bear witness to any particular event in history what would it be?."

Some of the responses were so cool I thought that I would pass the question here just to see what everyone's interest would be.

Post Away!.

Too many to consider, great question though!

A single event? Like the Kennedy assassination perhaps? Or the crucifixion?

Or something longer, like WW2?

Ah, a ww2 fetishist?/i/smilies/16x16_smiley-wink.gif

You'd take that over every other event in human history?

Robert Heinlein wrote a short story about a man who invents a device that can 'tune back' through history, to any single time and place, viewing as if through an old television: grainy, etc, but with sound. (the government finds out and wants it destroyed, but the inventor does something extremely clever, especially considering at the time of the writing the medium he uses hadnt even been inventeed yet, but Heinlein thought of it. Truly another HG Wells IMHO, one of tyhe most intelligent writers (and controversial) anyone could ever read)
Anyway, that's what I would like. A history viewer. One event is too few.
But I still ahev not decided what to choose yet.
(I love it when I have literally nothing to do at work, and no inkling to 'find something'. Ahh, fridays! The best!

hmmm....a very tough call indeed.

For me, it would probobly be the signing of the declaration of independance...like really...that would be a BIG thing so see! the future that a single document determined...amazing!

I would have to say yes, not as a fetish but as the defining moment in "world history"where the true unity between 3 crucial allies embarked upon the most important event in world history and neither one backed down to the task at hand.

The signing of the declaration of independance was no doubt the most important point in "American History" but would have basically become an I.O.U. on paper, if Hitler had accomplished his overtaking of the world.

if its a WWII event it would no doubt be the largest tank battle in the history of warfare: Kursk, or Stalingrad, the house to house fighting during the summer.

but then id love to have seen some of the ancient battles the Romans fought.

Sure, it's fun and all playing BF1942 and busting Nazis, but to actually mean that you would want to be there and witness thousands of deaths, pfft. I'd probably want to witness Martin Luther King Jr's speech at the Pool of Reflection.

I would agree with Smee and Oleg. Not as some kind of "game" but to try to get some small inkling of what they went through. The courage to move forward when you are numb with terror, when every muscle is screaming to run away and hide. Also to remember - thousands of those heroes pass away every day now. Soon, who will remember their sacrifice? It will just become a chapter in a history book. And finally, my sorrows and woes, and most peoples', are nothing compared to theirs - I think about that and shut up and move on.

And Hornet, what happened on September 7, 1941?

/i/smilies/16x16_smiley-happy.gif Buc, why the kangaroos?

Hehe, on a serious note: You'll have to go farther back than biblical times to see that then. That's if the story is actually real, they've found it to be an almost copy of a story written by the Babylonians, and that was probably from another store from even further back.

Yes there are many great flood stories and legends in many cultures. Some say that it is proof that the bible's "great flood" actually happened and use it to support the biblical story of Noah and the ark.

The reason why I would pay special attention to the kangaroos is because I really would like to know how Noah managed to get those animals of a continent that wasn't even discovered yet.

Emu's or wombats would be fine too /i/smilies/16x16_smiley-happy.gif

lol, and yes, I know what you mean, they try to claim the bible's ultimate originality that way, even though it doesn't work, since the timelines are way off, and the timelines of the previous stories originate before the timeline of the bible. Also, the names are different, so it's not the "same" story, it's just a story with the same exact events, but written by different people. It doesn't prove it didn't happen, but it proves it wasn't the writers of the bible that started it, they got it from someone else and incorporated into their own terms.

Anyway, it's all good for good morals in my opinion, whether or not they really happened is irrelevant.

Also Buc, there are several occassions in the bible where we either started out, or had to start over from just two or a single family of people. Now, especially with Noah's arc, doesn't that suggest that all humans and all animals are the result of incest? /i/smilies/16x16_smiley-tongue.gif

ok it would be kursk.

But I couln't possible cover the carnage that took place that day there.

Over 1 million soldiers died in the clash at kursk so that's why I would be there.

It's also as someone noted the largest tank battle.

Imagine being there in the most famuous tank battle of all time.

When around 600 tanks from both sides clashed in a few square miles of ground.

The carnage was huroundous.

If you could show just a fraction of it to everyone I wounder if we would still be gungho about going to war as we are?

It's not about witnessing death...it's about witnessing a focal point in history to which all would not be as it is today, if that single event didn't take place by the Allied forces on June 6th, 1944.

So if I could also add another interesting point to history...I would also like to bear witness to whom was the instigator that started our rapid technological advances...all of a sudden after man being present on earth for thousands of years all of a sudden we take off like a rocket in less than 100 years we explode with technological advancements that would have made previous socities heads spin?...and please...electricity and semi-conductors are the culprit behind it all (not)....then why not somewhere within the first 4,000 years ?.

being a classics student i have an endless amount of historical events /times i would have wanted to have seen.

personally i wouldnt like to see a war or violent event, I would want to sit in the athenian assembly and voted on an important issue then just sauntered around ancient athens and look at all the buildings and speak to all the people about what their life is like etc etc.
