View Full Version : How to make the Catalina land.....? AAAGH!

Can it be done?
I spent about two hours messing around on this one last night and finally had to admit defeat.
Take-off is fine but landing is a real night-mare (for me).
Has anyone solved this one.

I'm not sure about landing on any random piece of water, but there are a handfull of new "water airbases" on the new maps that act just like land-based airbases. Make a waypoint a landing WP near one of these water airbases and it will latch onto it. Then the catalina will communicate with ground control and line up for a landing and even taxi to the shoreline.

I've been able to get the Catalina to land in the water pretty near where I want it to go. I've set up waypoints to give it a fairly long, straight approach and then set the final landing waypoint in the water. I've not used marked seabases. If I remember correctly, when you first assign "landing" in the water the waypoint seemed to automatically move to the nearest airbase. I then click and drag that waypoint back to where I want it. I have wanted to have the Cat land near ships at sea. I've been able to get it pretty close to the ship I wanted after tweaking the approach, the landing point and the object I wanted to land near. There are a couple missions (one each to each campaign)that do this in the campaigns I have uploaded here
http://mudmovers.com/Sims/FB/fb_campaigns.htm
It was'nt perfect but it was close enough to get the idea across I think. Hope this helps.

The only place those floatplanes land consistently is in the proper airstrips!
Where are these waterplane landing strips?
Here is a tiny section of the summer map Gulf of Finland, showing one of the islands in the eastern end of the gulf.
The wet strip is the airbase icon in the water.
Note there are TWO wet airstrips shown - each one has a single icon.
There are a few more such airstrips near the other islands and on the coast.
For some reason, it seems the floatplane stations are closed when the gulf is frozen solid...

Touchdown on the southern strip on above map:

Yikes! I was wondering why they put those extra markers in, thought it was a mistake. Thanks.

Your Gonna Love this one Guys,
Ive created a South Pacific Black Cat Mission, where a Black Cat Stealth PBY transports Australian Commandoes deep into Japanese held territory, and lands in the Sepik river.
Ive used the Kuban Map to simulate the Owen Stanly Ranges in Papua New Guinea South Pacific 1942.

I have tested and re tested in 20 mission launches the Pby takes off from the Coast flys accross the Ranges, swoops in low over the country side and lands in one of those little rivers you see on the Kuban Map 20 times with out a hitch.

Its part of a Coop Mission among other Coop Missions I have created using Pacific Skins.
The Missions and skins will be included on a down load site I will be creating shortly.
The Missions are for Australian American or other squads that want to fight in South Pacific Coops Online.

Cheers

On the subject of seaplanes: Why does the MBR behave strangely (flying up and down at low altitude) and the PBY fly normally (at the appropriate altitude and no oscillations)?

I don't know why people are having so much trouble landing seaplanes in the FMB. (This is the second thread I've seen about this today.)

I've never tried it before but I set up a quick test mission and got it to work correctly in about 3 minutes. In the other thread, it was the MBR-2. I just went back and changed it to the PBN-6 (Cat) and it landed on the water just fine. This was on the Crimea map...no 'water-strips' there.

Just pay attention to your waypoints/airspeeds and you should have no problems.

Something related for the Catalina's: Why do they sit so oddly in the water when placed as a static object? They sit extremely nose-low in the water. (forgot to grab a screen-shot, but I'm sure you folks can see what I mean by looking at one of your own missions with a static Cat in it).

That is a known bug, I read it would be fixed in some later release. Affects a few other static aircraft too.
