The configuration tool that comes with the game will not allow me to change assignment of the mouse buttons. This is just terrible! I use the mouse buttons for "forward" and "backward" in every game I play. I would not have purchased this game if Gamespot had not said the controls were "fully configurable." (Obviously, they didn't try to reassign the mouse buttons!)

If this was a peculiarity of the config tool and could be hacked in an .ini file, it would be OK, but the config tool saves the settings in some binary format!!!

Is there a software utility available that can remap my mouse buttons, or am I SOL? By the way, Prince of Persia DOES allow the mouse buttons to be reassigned, so the omission of this in BG&E is just silly.

Have you tried that tool used for mapping keys to joysticks? That may work backwards. I've seen some weird combos of buttons before, but that is the weirdest I've ever seen. Well, I use EDSF instead of WSAD because of the little bump on the keyboard...Let me know if the mapper works.

Downloaded JoyToKey but didn't get the gist of it at a quick 'n dirty glance.

Then, downloaded MouseWare, assigned mouse3 to click/select (required to have this function assigned). Assigned mouse1 and 2 to keystroke->uparrow and downarrow. Assigned uparrow and downarrow to desired functions in the config tool, and all seems well. Don't think there are any reidual effects (like automatically attacking when pressing forward).

My key choices are not so strange. This is an evolution from Doom2, where you fire with the spacebar, and use the arrow keys for forward/backward and rotation. Moving forward is the most common function in any 3D game, so most of the usual work is done with the right hand, which is limited to just a few mouse buttons, anyway. The left hand does all of the button work. I use D and F for strafe left/right, and (usually) A for jump and Z for crouch (opposite z-motion). Spacebar for fire/primary function (biggest button!), and S, W, and X for secondary fire/2nd function/use/reload, or whatever important functions you might need while moving. If a Lean function is available, they are assigned to E and R, directly above left and right.

This way, it is possible to be moving at a 45 degree angle and simultaneously jump, fire, and altfire.

Have a good one!
