View Full Version : Ottawa - anything special to visit?

Off topic - take it this is an OK place to ask.
My daughter (22) will visit Ottawa for 3 months starting mid/end of January and she asked me "what's worth seeing in Ottawa?".
To which I replied: "How/why should I know, but I know a place where there's some mighty fine guys who can help you out".
We live in Denmark so Canada is far away in more than one way.
Any suggestions that could make her stay memorable in a positive way?

Cobaka, as much as I love playing host, there's a line somewhere.... /i/smilies/16x16_smiley-wink.gif
EDIT: Seriously, what sort of things would your daughter enjoy? Historic? Nightlife? I realize she's your pride and joy, but it's a loaded question if you don't provide some extra info. /i/smilies/16x16_smiley-happy.gif

Thanks Dannik.
It's a combination.
She took a course for tourist guides and she wants to follow up on this on her own before she decides what she wants to be. One of the options is "city guide" so definitely museums/historic places/buildings have her interest.
She likes making friends so if there are any popular places for young people, be it nightlife or cafés, names of those will be a great help as well.

I really don't know Ottawa that well, even though I live a few hundred kilometers west of it. Some other forum members may be able to provide better local ideas.
In terms of history, it is Canada's capital, thus has some wonderful historic sites.
I know that Ottawa is expensive a place to live/work/etc. Hull, Quebec, which is literally a walk over the bridges from Ottawa (literally, you could probably throw a stone over it) has a much more active social scene, especially considering her age.
If I can find resources for work/play, I will certainly pass them along. I again have no first-hand info, but we'll see. /i/smilies/16x16_smiley-happy.gif

As a basis, she took an au-pair job but it involves little work and leaves her lots of free time to get to know Ottawa and surroundings.
So your info on Hull and Quebec were also useful.
Thanks again.

GreyHaired,
I use to be an avid skater and read long ago they have a river that runs thru Ottawa that appeals to many for this reason. Apparently, it is an ongoing carnival on the ice.
I never had the opportunity, but it intrigued me.

Grey,
I'm a Yank living just north of Boston and have been to Ottawa several times. Fantastic city and as someone else posted, Hull PQ is just over the bridge. Hull is/was an option for those looking to continue into the wee hours with the nightlife though (atleast it was for me).
Ottawa IMHO is one of those cities that is best explored on your own in relation to what interests you. The varied architecture alone is worth the trip. There's loads of cultural and recreational activities in all the seasons.
ie; Tulip fest or whatever its called in the spring, I went to a few outdoor concerts in the summer...there's skating and such on the Rideau canal system in the winter, canoeing and paddle boats in the summer ...the city seems to be extremely well kept and protected (general appearance and crime rate/safety). I have loved every minute of time spent there... Great Parks and Forested areas in, and short rides from, the city. (The Gatineau, MacKenzie King estate trip is very nice)
You're daughter will have a spectacular time. If it were my daughter I couldn't be more pleased at her destination.
I'm waxing poetic I know, but I don't have a bad thing to say about the city, to me it's what a city should be like.
If I was twenty years younger I'd be driving up there to give her a tour lol. (hey..all you buggers keep those thoughts to yourself! ;> )

I know Toronto is probably a good trip from Ottawa, and I don't mean to imply that Dannik should play host (/i/smilies/16x16_smiley-wink.gif ), but I was only in Toronto briefly, and loved it. Very beautiful, clean and safe, I thought. Having grown up near New York, I hate cities, but Toronto is one that I definitely want to go back to.

Ottawa! Don't send your daugter to Ottawa! You have obviously never been there. The local women look like troglodytes and really hairy ones at that. If your daughter is even remotely attractive then she'll have dozens if not hundreds of rowdy Canadian men attracted to her like moths to a flame. I hope you never have to see what a young Ottawan man in heat can do to a pretty young thing. . . I'd sooner send a girl into a pack of coyotes than Ottawa! If you decide to let her go there don't say I didn't warn you. . .
And don't let these horney bastids tell you otherwise!
I think that's the funniest thing I've written in ages. /i/smilies/16x16_smiley-very-happy.gif

LOL guys. You all did a good job, thanks for the feedback.
Thanks Knife - sounds good.
Thoramir, she's as ugly as the winters are short in Scandinavia, so no worries there /i/smilies/16x16_smiley-wink.gif
The alternative to Ottawa was Australia. From frequenting the forums here, you know what she could risk run into, "down under". /i/smilies/16x16_smiley-very-happy.gif

I live in Ottawa. Not a bad place however I do refer to it as a glorified pee break between Montreal and Toronto. It's a safe town by in large. Can't smoke anywhere in doors which blows. There are lots of museums and plenty of historical sites to hit up. I'd recommend getting a place downtown, Bank Street area. It is expensive living for what your $$$ gets. People are friendly but definitly not outgoing. Anyways hope this helps ya out a lil
Cheers
more questions?
