I have tried many things but every time I start multiplayer it gets to the flash screen then silently quits to the desktop. I have tried changing system settins, shortcut settings, compatibility settings...nothing works. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Does single player work? It may be that your video card is not supported by this game.
Minimum Requirements:

Windows 98/ME/2000/XP (only)
1GHz Pentium III or AMD Athlon Processor
256MB RAM
64 MB DirectX 8.1-compliant video card (list is below of supported cards)
DirectX 9.0b

Recommended:

Windows XP
1.8 GHz Pentium 4 (I recommend at least 2.4)
512 MB RAM
128 MB DX 9.0 video card (List is below)

Supported video cards:

ATI Radeon 8500/9x00 family cards and newer
Geforce 3/4/FX series with the exception of the MX series cards and the laptop models of the aforementioned cards. These cards will NOT RUN THE GAME.

I am afraid I do not have any experience with the multiplayer issues. Anyone else?

Do you have any CD emulation or virtual drive software? You may need to disable it if you do because of anti-piracy enctyption on the game. Things like Alcohol 120?
