Not an Il2 prob but I figured there are alot of xp pros around here so.....if I could ask .
I'm getting about a 30-45 second "hang" in the start button/task bar on start up . Desk top icons works fine but if you move mouse pointer to start button/taskbar it turns to a hour glass . On the task manager I've narrow it down to 3 applications that shut down (from 30 to 27)before start button/ taskbar works . Last one that shutts down before task bar works is a NORTON app in prefetch . Ive tryed reistalling Norton and vid drivers(app that stops before Norton was ATI) . I have XP Pro .
any sugestions ? Thanks

Try stopping some of the services that start automatically at startup. Go to start > run > type msconfig and hit the "startup" tab. Uncheck everything that you don't need to be running in the background at startup (Most of these are your quick lauch icons on the right taskbar). Then go to services, check the "hide micorosoft services" box, and uncheck the apps remaining. None are essential for XP to run.
This will not keep anything from running, just stops them from loading at startup. You might want to keep Norton checked/on, but try it with it off to see if that's your problem. Uncheck any ATI service--it does not affect your card performance, just preloads the control panel and whatnot. It'll still work normally.
My money is that Norton is hanging it up. It's a bloat *****.

Try deleting the files in your temp folder and prefetch.
C:/windows/temp
C:/windows/prefetch
And clean your registry of strays with regcleaner.
That's all I can think of. Has this been going on a while, or did this start happening recent enough to where you can do a system restore?

Thanks for reply Wheather Man
I did try prefetch / temp deletes already .
Jv16 pwr tool reg cleaner dosent work any more . Any suggestions on a good reg cleaner for XP ? . I did try hand editing Norton from reg .
I hate to do a clean install ....... ouch !
I have thought about Windows "repair " off of XP disc . If I do that do I have to refomat RAID 0 array(at start were you normally press F6) ?
I will try system restore first ....

You can still get regcleaner here: http://fileforum.betanews.com/detail.php3?fid=963771680
If you do a repair operation, You won't need to reformat. It will only replace the windows files, and keep all your other data intact. Though you probably have to still F6 for the raid driver. You proceed like you are doing a fresh install (skip the very first recovery option and choose new) until you come to the screen where it asks for which type of installation you want. Choose (R)Repair.

Greetings.
I don't know if this will help, but Norton, on Jan.7'th had a problem with an issuance of a particular certificate. I'm not very computer literate but the problem that manifested itself was a drastic slowdown in the way your computer ran. It also affected Word and Excel. Wouldn't let them open.
There is a fix. I myself experienced this. It would take forever to open things and when it did they ran very slow. I d/l'd the patch and everything is back to normal.
The link to the explanation and fix(forgive me I don't know how to put a link here) is

If you use a Lan cable with an IP service that is not "always on" (example: DSL) then when you start up it will hang because it thinks you are part of a network so it looks for an IP till it gives up.
To stop this, go to the services menu and disable "Workstation"

Greetings all.
Fortunately, I didn't have to reformat or do anything serious to fix this problem.
Just go to the link I provided and it will take you throught the fix.
My computer is running just as well as it did before the problem manifested itself.
