Ok, Driv3r has nothing to do with BGE at all, but i saw something in the game today that was sooooo cool, that I have to tell about it.

ok, so I'm driving down the streets of Miami in a Corvette, probably doing close to 100 mph, if not more. Im zipping around traffic, you know, the usual reckless driving stuff.
I come up to an intersection and i notice that the light is red. Red means stop, and there was absolutely no way i was going to slow down this great ride for that light. I flew thru the intersection. Then it hit me; more like i hit it. a four door sedan drives into the intersection on it's green light, and just intersects my route. There was absolutely nothing i could do. I couldnt slow down, because i was too cool to stop. I broadsided the right side of the sedan, completely crushing the right rear door and quarter panel, the trunk flew open, and the rear windows shattered in a spectacular shower of sparkly particles. The car flew back away from me at a fierce speed, pulling into a 180 spin. Then the sedan caught air underneith, and went airborne, still spinning. The car flew a few feet, and came down nose first into a concrete barrier, smashing the hood up and cracking the front windshield. The sedan then rolled backwards a final few feet, and came to a stop...

My car continued to roll though the intersection after the collision. The engine died on the impact, and my lifeless car rolled into the far concrete barrier doing about 30 mph. I slamed into the barrier, pushing the front of the car a few more inches closer to the interior, as if it wasnt allready bad enough from the intial impact.

Once my car was stopped, i got out and walked over to the sedan, to see if the driver was allright. I was shocked at what i saw. A completely destryed car, all my fault. and when i looked inside, threre was the driver, slumped over at the wheel. He was dead. The impact was so incredible, it killed him instantly. I opened his door, and his lifeless human mass fell to the concrete.

A few seconds later, the cops pull up, and inspect/clean up the accident. I felt so bad, i couldnt believe it! This was one of the most incredible displays of real-time gaming i've ever seen, and a constant reminder of the consequences of my decisions. And the worst part of it all, i forgot to save the replay!

Ive heard that the game is a mediocre experience. That bit sounded interesting, though.

That does sound cool, and uh, to keep it on topic, I wonder if they could implement stuf like this in a sequel to BG&E to have local troops come help after a major vehicle accident, or, uh, something.

thatd be good--it would make the world seem even more realistic. i always thought it was cool how the police would fine you for shooting other boats...but after the first time, i learned my lesson http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/images/smiley/16x16_smiley-happy.gif

Well, i've heard decent/good reviews, so here's mine: a review you can trust.

Before you dig in, you must know this. Im a car crashing nut. Any game with realistic depictions of cars being smashed and thrashed i absolutely love. Driv3r is almost more than realistic in the car damage department, so its allready starting off with high points from me.

First off, i have the PS2 version, which i've heard plays better than the xbox version. My first initial impact of this game is that its absolutely gorgeous. The sun shimmers on cars and asphalt, and glints in the decent looking ocean. Shadows are cast very realistically on even the smallest of objects. To me, its this advanced shadowing that makes the whole experience immersive to me.

Second impression, the cars handle incredibly. They all have their own feel and sound, and they slide around corners, topple over, plow through objects, all depending on their weight/mass, velocity, top speed and such. Its the most realistic driving experience i've had in a game. It still feels like the original driver, just very beefed up.

Cruising around the city, and causing trouble is tons of fun in take a ride mode. The only thing about it is that theres nothing to do other than drive, crash, and shoot people and poliece. Unlike GTA, theres no little mini delivery missions, hidden packages, special missions, or missions at all. Take a ride is all about you and the road. I love it. Despite there being nothing to do, Ive logged over 15 hours of game time in take a ride mode alone, thats in two days.

The film director is amazing, with a much respected added slow mow adjust for the camera angles. This can lead to some very interesting cinematic setups. Saved replays average about to 99k on a PS2 memory card, each.

controls on your feet feel a little akward at first, because Driv3r treats it like a 3rd person action game, much like max payne. Its difficulty is much appreciated once it's mastered, because this leads to much better gameplay action, and overal superiority of control when compared to GTA's simple control style. Shooting accuratly is a little tough with the control sticks.

The undercover mode is excellent. The FMV is rendered wonderfully, and each sequence is dripping with style and noir. The biggest complaint: it is short, as you've read on all major publications. Once this short but sweet mode is finished, theres not much left for those who don't enjoy take a ride mode.

There are a few glitches that i've encountered. Ive seen cop cars appear on top of my car, out of nowhere. I experienced bad framerate slowdown when i was in a huge 5 car pileup, but i was laughing so hard that i didn't really care. Thoes are the two big gameplay glitches ive seen. The third problem i've seen involves saved replays. I saved an awesome replay of a pedestrian on a motorcycle getting slammed by a police car, and his body flying against a building. I watched the replay about 4 or 5 times, and then i saved it. When i re-loaded the replay later, its as if the traffic conditions were completely different. Near the beginning, my car blindly runs into the back of a stopped car that wasnt' there before. The turns that i input into the game were still there, but the car wasn't on track, its collision with the car throwing it off. My car ended up just running into a house until the police destroyed it. It was completely different than what really happend. It was odd, and very frustrating. I lost a really sweet replay for good.

Overall, i doubt the game will be a GTA killer, allthough i would admit that it probably is for me. I dont think anyone who enjoys racing/driving/action games will be disapointed in Driv3r. Go ahead, buy it. You'll enjoy the realistic carnage you cause, its a welcome change from GTA's cartoony fakeness. The game is a little buggy, i wouldnt be surprized if Atari's working on that right now.

My score for me: 9 out of 10

My score for most everyone else: 7.5 out of 10

Driv3r is darn good if you dont mind a short undercover mode, and enjoy mindless car smashing and stunt driving.

the voice actings is great. Really top notch, it adds a ton to the cinematic qualities of the FMV. Now, if only the lips looked as convincing as the voices do http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_wink.gif

The Driver games have always been extremely hard, the cops ability to track you down in the original bordered on insane, not to mention the level where you had to go through without taking too much damage to your car because it was to be sold on the black market. You don't like the level of difficulty, tough beans. http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_wink.gif

I was talking more about mission mode really. They'd be forever popping up in one lane bridges. I found the best way to avoid them in the original is to drive alongside most roads, behind the cars in the normal lane. But yeah, there was some to be desired from the AI, since they were pretty much dropped in at spawn points, but they were incredibly HARD spawn points. http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/images/smiley/icon_twisted.gif

actually as far as i know, cops are supposed to follow traffic laws, even in pursuit. (at least thats how it works here in the states, correct me if im wrong.)

Well falcon, even though ive got the PS2 version (would love to take screenies on the PC version, but i couldnt wait for it, and plus i have a crappy gamepad.) i decided to take some screenshots anyways. I took these using my digital camera, on my new tripod. I took the shots in 2.0 megapixels, and resized to 640 X pixels. pic quality does not represent quality of final game :P

And as an added bonus, heres a short 2 meg mpeg clip of the semi smash replay, i drove an 18 wheeler into crosstraffic, completely destroying a little 2 door coupe. fun stuff to watch in frame by frame.

Back when I was a kid (hahah, man I sound deceptively old) you had to wait a whole year before a movie went from cinema to video tape... sometimes even longer. These days, movies go to dvd a couple months after, and a couple months after that... what were top titles once, are now bargain bin material. Same for games.

hahah, well im not exactly one to talk... I'm the master of impulse buying and slow regret. Besides, I have a philosophy of paying full retail if something is worth it, be it a CD, DVD or Game. It's only fair to pay that small price considering the production cost for something you will value and appreciate. And it is nice to feel good about helping the production team continue doing what they love.

If I ever make a break into games industry, I will appreciate people like... err... ME http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/images/smiley/88.gif

depends which site you mean. If it is PayneKiller, then it's all done in a programming language called PHP, it allows me to store user details and do other stuff like guestbook, forums, login, etc. Not all web-hosts/providers allow you to run PHP so unfortunately not everyone can use it http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_frown.gif

If you are talking about the main site, then that was done in Flash. I did that because I was bored, and I anyone who visits there should be forewarned that it is not meant for mass public viewing... i just thought it would be better than "under construction" http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/images/smiley/16x16_smiley-very-happy.gif
