Just when you thought your life was getting easier BulletTooth. Some of these maps are killing our frames, something has to be done about it. Its just unplayable at times. Show your support here if we want to have UBI do something about it.
Other than that, i liked athena sword alot. Especially the Capture The Enemy Mode.
Now go yell at the president of UBI BT, we appreciate your hard work! http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif

Yeah, optimize them!
I mean, it's like you took all of the laggy elements from Meat Packing and Banking House, and combined them all into 90% of the AS maps! WHY!?!?

I dont have AS, so I cant comment on performence or the construction of the maps. What is it you feel is UN-Optimized in (The Maps)
What is it? to few zones? to many static meshes? Too much bsp in the Lines of site?
All your saying is OPTIMIZE THE MAPS!
If you know what your talking about, then POINT OUT were they suffer rather then shoot your mouth off the way you are.
If you dont understand map optimization... You DONT HAVE a VALID opinion on it. And you should save your breath for someone who CAN point out were they lack attention, Or sufffer.

yes please optimize them. I really like the maps in Athena Sword and it would be nice to be able to play them with better FPS.

Thing is that the maps may be done to proper Unreal engine spec its just the age of the rendering system that is showing. I'm sure some of the maps on UT2004 are bigger but the engine has been optimized to the last bit and Raven Sheild hasn't been.
It'd be great if they focused on getting the engine optimized even with 10-15% gains in framerates...I'm fairly certain that they can't just drop a new renderer in...they probably have custom code for RvS that doesn't exist for Unreal Tournament but they probably should try and clean the system up a bit.

you guys expect maps 2-3 times the size of normal rvs maps to run the same?? The way the maps are laid out you cannot optimize them, only way would be removing fancy textures and reflections, and maybe some trees here and there. Other than that it would mean recreating the maps and doing all those neat portal tricks and what not. I run the game on somewhat 'average' computers and get around 40-60 fps which isnt bad.
It must be something to with certain computer setups.

lets just say unreal2k3 and 2k4, on a crappy system and a good system i get very nice frame rates, even in big maps... the only maps i might have had a problem with is custom made maps like "Rats" maps that were extreamly huge, and that was due to the creator not making them as great in optimizations, and even then it worked on my slow hardware (btw its repaced with current high quality hardware now).
now ravenshield/athena issue with frames. ... for the most part the outside area's DO lag and pritty bad too. low end or HIGH end, doesnt happen for everyone which is STRANGE, i think more people have the problem than do not tho.
if some of the mappers can open up the maps and take a look at them, see if they did correct optimizations, that would help.
but as its said above (or elsewehere) we need a little increase in frames, because some people are having a lot of problems playing at low fps, even with the required hardware.
could be that a debug command was left unchecked or something, but i dunoo. the dev's didnt give us a product that was promised in the time it was delayed.

If certain maps are not optimized properly then I fully support optimizing them. And yes I suffer from FPS issues, but only on some of the AS maps.

I do not know if maps can be optimized to improve FPS dramatically as much as to notice a big difference than before but this FPS issue is my one and only reason why I'm holding back on buying this game. If I hear good news, meaning improved FPS, then I would definitely be getting it in a heartbeat. I suffered too much in Raven Shield and I don't wanna break my heart having to play such a great game in low FPS. Sob.

This is a qoute from an article!!, I read and im a bit, taken a back by it, Cause it got me thinking if UBI really knows this!!, it seems like other game developers is actually trying to get their games to not go under 72 FPS or as close to.
QOUTE:
So what is the answer to how many frames per second should we be looking for? Anything over 60 fps is adequate, 72 fps is maximal (anything over that would be overkill). Framerates cannot drop though from that 72 fps, or we will start to see a degradation in the smoothness of the game. Don't get me wrong, it is not bad to play a game at 30 fps, it is fine, but to get the illusion of reality, you really need a frame rate of 72 fps. What this does is saturate the pipeline from your eyes to your visual cortex, just as reality does. As visual quality increases, it really becomes more important to keep frame rates high so we can get the most immersive feel possible. While we still may be several years away from photographic quality in 3D accelerators, it is important to keep the speed up there.
QOUTE:

Funny seeing you start this one Seal...I thought you lived in the UK?
Anyways, I'm awaiting my pre order of the UK version, so I cant comment on the performance, but if there are problems, lets hope they get fixed soon.

No, i live in the US. Florida to be exact. A few maps (cant remember which one). The map with the yellow car on top. For some reason some parts of the map that you look at lock up the computer like crazy. I dont know if its the wall textures or what, but its awefull. Most of the maps are good though, my frames are fine running in the 70's

You're probably thinking of Seal's teammate Soul, he lives in the UK I believe.
The map you're talking about Seal is called Back Alleys. I also notice it on Italian Warehouse, both day and night.

The UT series uses a different texture compression I believe...at least when I play UT2k3 + 4 and then goto RvS that is the difference I see. What that means is the textures in RvS for the most part look better but cause lower fps. If you notice on outdoor maps of UT2k4 especially the textures on everything get very soft and low res. I'd say instead of *edit* at Ubi to optomize it we ask the map modders to look into this. This may not be the problem but it is a start. :P I still have to re-learn my UT map modding before I can help but I'm working on it. lol

Actually- the textures on UT2004 are compressed in the same way as UT2003, but are of slightly higher resolution. The texture resolution on Ravenshield is, I believe, equal to that of UT2003. In terms of scene complexity, I would have to say that because of the lightmaps and detail on the weaponary, Ravenshield has the edge. The first beta demo of UT2003 ran pretty slow for me, but UT2004 runs as fast as lightning, and clearly has an optimised engine.
One thing I want you lot to try, since I don't have AS myself. Go into the system folder and open the "Ravenshield.ini" file. Press ctrl+f and type in "min". Keep searching until you find "min desired frame rate". Set this to 40 or so, see if there is any visible degradation in Ravenshield, and compare this with the framerate (just a thought).

i see textures in custom maps compressed the same way they are in unreal2k3.. the modders already KNOW about this and use it.

Seal just doesn't want to uninstall all his stuff and reinstall from scratch because he'll have wasted all the $$ paid to Torm.
I have another post in here bellyaching about the same stuff as Ms. SEAL b/c my game went down the crapper and it's a pretty good rig and all I did to fix it up is:
uninstall ALL RvS files
unistall ALL AS files
defrag drive
reinstall RvS
apply 1.0 > 1.55 patch
reinstall AS
apply 1.0 >1.1 patch
do the 3 main cache tweaks to optimize to my 128mb v/c
do the one cache tweak in the athenasword.mod file - open it with notepad.
Voila, the game started to run better. Was still seeing more ylw frames than I'd like but no more red 16-26 fps and that's what was killing me.

How excessive. Formatting is too much trouble to do it for one game. lol. Plus it rarely fixes anything that can't be fixed with an uninstall and reg cleaner.

not really, people really dont know how to fix much of anything. i really dont know many people as skilled as my self, and other tech's (hell some techs dont know anything about some things as well.. they think if they have an A++ certificate their qualified for everything, bah).
but for some people it may be excessive. as for formatting for ONE game, mabe they didnt have much on their computer, their was a time where i formatted about every month or two because of windows and the software etc. its a good practice to backup your work and formatt on a regular bases, that is if you own windows and do many things. i no longer do that much anymore, because i use my linux box for most things, and trying to find out whats wrong is a long task, but if u format with linux you have a LONG time to configure everything again, so its worth the learning to look for the problems and fixing them.
