Was wondering whether any human has been able to defeat the King engine in chessmaster 10?

how much more advanced is the AI in the 10th edition compared to 9000?

Hmmm. I beated chessmaster 10 but very unfairly. Chessmaster had 2 minutes and I had 2 days. I did not used any computers, but I used a lot of books. It was not a fair game, but I think that I learned from this game a lot. I had to studie and I had to think long and hard. You should try it. Its quite a fun.

Already have hehehe you can look at the game in the first thread Best games at the very top and at the bottom it has me vs. Chessmaster 9000 but not 10th Edition. I had about 30 minutes though and he had 1/min per game.

If anyone has beaten 9000, then they can also beat 10th ed, since 9000 played stronger then 10th on their highest level.

can you please annotate as much of this game as you possible feel like? the more the better... especially the two piece sacrifices in the beginning.. but if you could find the time to annotate everything, that would be great.

Great job, btw!!

I don't think chessmaster actually plays at 2940 like it says on my computer. The elo's of the computer players seem slightly inflated.

I know I play at nearly 2400 ELO, but I should be no match for Chessmaster, at 2940. However, I am 2-2 against CM so far. Unless my rating has magically risen, CM is weaker than 2940. He made clear, subtle mistakes in the games I beat him, however, the two I lost CM completely pounded me into the floor lol. So I'm not sure, maybe CM plays closer to 2700 and i've improved/got lucky.

However, the first time I beat Chessmaster it was clearly very confused. It actually popped up saying I had made a blunder. Chessmaster was oblivious to the long term effects of my move; I won easily. It was CM's blunder, not mine.

How do you record the game so others can watch? I have a screenshot I took of me beating shakespeare (2708). The game is over at this point, he can't get out of checkmate. It's quite beautiful actually 8)

CMX's rating is definitely inflated. I think at slower speeds Chessmaster would probably be more like 2600, around the strength of a strong grandmaster. However, CMX is much, much weaker in bullet games and faster blitz games. I'm not sure exactly where the transition occurs, but that is probably be what you're experiencing.

Tomski1981
09-30-2006, 08:55 PM
so the fact that you kicked CMs butt, does that mean your playing strength is GMs?

c1arinetboy
09-30-2006, 09:07 PM
Lol, of course not! Just because I beat Chessmaster once or twice doesn't mean I could beat regularly.

True, Wikipedia says CM plays at about 2715, but that's assuming the engine has time to think things out properly.

It appears when you pressure CM on the clock it tends to make a blunder. However, if it doesn't blunder, the strength of CM is pretty obvious, and I wouldn't doubt it plays at 2700.

I wouldn't be able to beat it in a classic game. But then again almost noone would. I'm happy as it is with my 2-2 against it.

FIRST of all im orignially from tawian an island near china. i learned english, and i just type to fast and make too much spelling 'erors' (noticed how that is spelled wrong)
next, u can beat chessmaster, but out of a long term 50 games? another story. and um...CH10 rating is around 2750 in real official ratings.

If you recognize that they are errors, typing too fast is no excuse. We have as much right to be annoyed at you for those errors as we would if you were American http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_wink.gif

and um...CH10 rating is around 2750 in real official ratings.

Look, I've played against chessmaster many times, and even though I'm not at the engine's level, I can tell you it's nowhere near 2750 (what are these "real official ratings" anyway?). Chessmaster may be strong tactically, but it can be very weak positionally when you get it into the right position.

next, u can beat chessmaster, but out of a long term 50 games? another story. and um...CH10 rating is around 2750 in real official ratings.

I'm going to experiment with this to see how powerful chessmaster is in the long run.

Chessmasters ELO probably is near 2750 in a classical match, due to it being a computing monster, with the extra time it wouldn't surprize me that it would find moves the human player cannot and foil any human attempts on it. The computer also won't miss a potential checkmate.

Chessmaster plays a very strong blitz, however, it is not blunder free, which is chessmasters problem. It is definitely a stronger player than me (2400~) but, it made a very big blunder I would not expect a human player to make in our second match. It was a very human oriented move, CM completely overlooked the checkmate and felt the move was OK because of a material advantage. Seems like CM started flipping through moves and simply saw the material advantage, and simply grabbed it because of pressure from the clock... and then after 10-20 more seconds of looking through moves realized it had just lost XD

I did my best http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif. I'm pretty tired, but I think it should be readable. Actually, now that I think about it, I forgot to explain those two sacrifices. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/1072.gif I'll go do that now...

Tomski1981
10-02-2006, 11:33 PM
wow, thanks.. i appreciate that.. that was a fantastic game and it definitly deserves to be up there on the user game java viewer. and the annotation is a real help... i'm surprised chessmaster made some moves that it did.. but that shows that it was very confused by the attack it was facing.. it couldn't decide between position or material strategy and because of that it got burned. i know i have questions, but it's mostly about the subtle moves... and why the smallest move can make the biggest difference... i'll post them tomorrow, because i, too, am tired right now.

Also goes to show chessmaster doesn't understand the clock XD

It didn't have to force a draw, but chessmaster didn't want to lose his position and give me the advantage, so I quickly abused that to force draw, even though CM could have easily won simply because of the clock ;o

We can also see some rating inflation there >.>

The game is fun. I have somehow ended up drawing by threefold repetition in 52 moves at 2204 Elo US. If you add the computer side too, it is actually 104 moves. I never thought I could even come close to this level. Until I can do it consistently, I still am no good because 2246 total cremates me!hehe I have never won a single game above 1600 in my life so far. I am starting to go over the academy section to learn more about the theories. It is interesting. Even though unlikely, it gives one hope of maybe winning at least once. Thank you all for sharing your winnings. By the way, the game lasted about two hours and forty-five minutes. So, according to my understanding... 2200 is considered a low level master.

why chess master froze the game when hes about to get beat up

KHollister

That's not true... Chessmaster doesn't "freeze" in a losing position. My guess is that there's something about your game (or your computer).

I was studying a game by two masters in history in the database of Chessmaster 10th Edition. The one master decided to fold. I decided to carry out the game to see if the side that seems to be the winner could be won even by me. I set the level to Chessmaster, and after about an hour and a half of playing the end-game, I won. So Chessmaster is beatable. You just have to be able to get to the position where you can have a won-end-game.
