I am going to build a new system and have limited finances and would like some feed back on which direction to take, either AMD or Intel. Would I be better off going with Barton 2500 or P4 2.4 with 800mhz fsb? The Amd is $156.00au and the P4 2.4/800 is $294.00au. Forgotten Battles is going to be running on it 7 days a week or as near too as possible L0L. Thanks fella's

My sugestion/advice is to wait just a lil' longer and get Pentium4 800FSB with HT when their price drops down a bit. I've had a Pentium4 2GHz 400FSB and when I got Pentium4 3GHz 800FSB with HT, it was a major performance boost in IL-2... I even got my new CPU for AUD$515. 2.4GHz is indeed sufficient to run IL-2 but extra cycles and HT will make even more out of it /i/smilies/16x16_smiley-happy.gif

One downside is that if your video card is not of higher end you'll still lose on the visual end... oh and you'll have to get matching motherboard and RAM with new CPU.

If your on a limited budget, AMD is the way to go.

AMD on Nforce2 mobo would be my choice.

P4 2.4g (c ,I think) is best of Intel ................
Overclockable to 3.2 plus with great stablity .
If you have the dough its the best .
Besides AMD will go under ...........

Chech for prices at Pricewatch. As a couple of examples: a Barton 2500+ is $81 and the P4 2.4 800 is $162; these prices include shipping.

And if your into overclocking, heed the other advice, either choice you'll probably have a good-deal a screamer.

Good point Hawg_Dawg, I overlooked it. He must be referring to Australia and I've read other's comment its very difficult to receive any trans-continental shipping - I think he's stuck. Sheesh...

Best bang for the buck is an AMD system with nForce2 mobo. nForce 2 boards are really the buisness. I suggest an Abit
or Asus. Great performance from mine!

Well here itâ´s. An average overclocked 2500+ BARTON system and an average overclocked 2.4c system the 2.4c system will be slightly faster. But bang for the buck there is absolutely no question. Go nforce 2 ultra 400 and 2500+ Barton. You would probably get about 95 % of the performance of the Intel based system that way...

But it all depends on what chip you get. There is very poor AQXEA Barton cores out there. (I know since I got one.) I am watercooling and can hardly get my 2500+ Barton to do 2200 Mhz stable. Most with air cooling do 2300 Mhz.

That or my Abit NF7-S rev 2.0 was a really poor one... Hardly even wonâ´t do stock speed at stock voltage stable. Most of these do easy 210 fsb at least mine doesnâ´t do 200 (or CPU hard to tell...)

Thats not good about your barton. Hsve you tried relaxing memory timings? Increase vcore & chipset voltage?
I have a tbred-'b' 2600+ with same board as you. I can take it up to 10x215 with RAM timings of 6-2-2-2, and its 100% stable.
At the moment I am running 11x210 (2315MHz), but my cooling is not that good (globalwin CAK4-88T), so my temps are ~57 under load, a bit too high.

But yes, really its luck of the draw with chips and mobos.

Nice board though.

I left the "D" off the au, it should have read AUD Australian dollar's.

Thanks for all the replies Fella's, plenty of info to help me. Bang for the buck is the way to go for me atm, and I will also wait and see how prices go over the next couple month's, also the vid cards are sure to reduce in price as the new x51 and the 9850xt are released. this is gunna be heaps of fun http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

Are you really great at putting computers together ***correctly*** then you can really save some $$$...I knew I would screw it up big time if I attempted to do it my self (without any help)....
So I had a computer place put together:
Gigabyte mobo 865pe 1000 pro,
2.4ghz cpu
1024 mb ddr ram
for $585 which included labor & cutting a hole in the side of the case so I could put a big-ol-fan blowin directly on my ATI 9700Pro ($300@PC Club) and I used my 400 watt power supply & the SB Audigy Gamer which I had upgraded to earlier...
It was a bit over my budget, but I'm glad I did it now that the final payment is about to be mailed in..lol..
I only wish that I could have afforded the 2.8 or 3.0 ghz cpu at the time, but NOT!!!
anyway, I can add that in a year or so if I feel the need.
what ever you do...make sure that the MOBO & memory are conpatible...I believe that was the problem with my Gateway setup...
