The secret of success in the Exile game is to explore, explore explore. Look at and touch everything. That is how you find the clues to solve the puzzles. Sometimes things you see, hear or touch, you wont realise are clues until you find the puzzle later on.
Check around the laboratory and look for clues. Read the books. Examine the workings of the lift. It will come clear!

i just cant get the lift working
Lift in the main tusk.
You need to look around in Saav's lab and get a book from the hammock.
Once the lift is raised (without you in it) apply the clues to the gadgets in the pit under the elevator.
The most worrysome are the pendulums and the other is the three armed thing with rotating things on the end of each arm. The other two things are pretty much right or wrong.
