SUV, Maine-style!
If it looks crappy that's because I got lazy and let photobucket (my pic host) do the resizing. Digital Cameras are great. They really are.

Anyhow, I didn't catch any fish, but I saw a lot of large salmon caught today, by a guy who decided to put himself well within my casting space (he decided to get 10 feet away from me which is well within the minimum safe distance for fly fishing, let alone too close for comfort). There's not a lot a places for people to go right now since there's still a lot of ice and the fish tend to stay in certain areas. Worst of all the guy kept cursing and throwing his cigarette butts in the water (I was downstream) so I decided to go elsewhere. When I got to elsewhere there were absolutely zero fish and decided I'd just practice casting (It's been months after all and fly casting requires practice). At some point I backed into a rock, tripped and took a spill in 34 degree (farenheit, that's about one degree centigrade for you Europeans and Australians) water. I wasn't hurt, my equipment is fine but my God was it COLD! But that's ok, I never would've got to take a picture of the crazy SUV I saw in Calais (pronounced locally as Caliss, not like Calais in France) which in right on the US/Canadian border. I don't mind though, I'm going fishing with friends on Saturday (ones who won't scare the fish) and I'll get to go out with my wife Sarah tonight for dinner. I think I'll order trout or salmon.

Lap, there's still nothing but ice and snow on the back roads (this was a somewhat mountainous area) this was next to a highway. Digger, I didn't see it move at all, since winter is just about over I presume it's not going anywhere and it's just out on display. I took a good look at all it and it should be functional. However, I'd have to worry about that SUV being unstable if you put it on a snow covered hillside. This SUV looks top-heavy IMO.

Sure those things work. Toyota has had the same system available for their Land Cruisers for years now.

It is quite funny seeing that Blazer with tracks on a regular road, though. "Here we are. Ready to embark on a journey involving miles and miles of... errr... asphalt road."

Thor,
Sorry about swearing, throwing my butts in the water and scaring the fish. I didn't realize what a horses butt I was being. http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/images/smiley/16x16_smiley-wink.gif

I don't fish, but I'm pumped reading your story.

I forgot to mention the redneck I was fishing next to kept saying, "It's Seabiscuit!" when he hooked a fish or saying that the next one he caught was going to be 'Seabiscuit'.

I haven't seen the movie, and I'm not a big horse-racing fan does anyone have any idea why he would say that?

Bah, Wombat, the worst part by far is that you got within ten feet of me. I could've taken your ear off or hooked your eye had I made a bad cast. http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/images/smiley/16x16_smiley-wink.gif

LOL. You're not saying your dangerous with rod and reel like GH is with nades? j/k http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/images/smiley/16x16_smiley-wink.gif
I haven't seen the movie "Seabiscuit" either.
Maybe that yoyo meant it was going to be a winner. If he gets to close to you again, throw a large rock in the water and scream, "alligator!". Maybe it will take him by surprise and he will leave the area at a high rate of speed.

Hope you catch a big 'un.

Digger the Bass Derby is designed to remove an invasive species (in this case Bass, which were illegally introduced) from one of the last fisheries for large brook trout in the United States. Basically any water that the bass invade loses all of it's trout population within a few years because bass will eat all of the baby trout. It's a small wonder that some people would love to take a .357 and exact some revenge on the fish that have been destroying our state's waters. In June, hundreds of fishermen are getting together to go the Rapid River to eliminate as many bass as possible (myself included). We even have Jimmy Buffett as one of the sponsors of the event (apparently he's really big on fly-fishing and even comes to Maine to fish).

Take a look at the pictures and you'll see why someone might be angry enough to want shoot bass with a .357 magnum.

A typical Maine Brook trout (This is as big as the get in many, certainly not all of the rivers in maine). These fish probably won't be around in a few years.

My bad.

In the forum link you supplied above in the first post is this link (http://www.nytimes.com/2004/05/11/national/11FISH.html?ex=1085276373&ei=1&en=8c4b0b7744725036) which is the one I read.

In this story they shoot "quill-back suckers and red-horse suckers" which are native and co-habit with trout as they are bottom feeders.

ps.. Have another read of your post, "extract revenge"... on a fish with a rifle??? I still don't get it, but then again that's the beauty of democracies, I don't have too! http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/images/smiley/16x16_smiley-wink.gif
