yeh kevin you can buy the engine But its only for sale for REAL game devolpers no commercial user can buy it company's can also buy POLYBUMP but for none commersial and studdent ussers its free of charge polybump cost $900,-

"Terrain: Uses an advanced heightmap system and polygon reduction to create massive, realistic environments. The view distance can be up to 2km when converted from game units."
Sounds like the landscape in the distance is low polygon, but you dont notice because it is far away?
Is that the right idea?
i read somewhere else that the far cry island was like 5km square...
anyone know??

well that culling down of polygons in the distans is some thing we in the modders wold and game devolpers word call LOD's LODS stands for Level Of Detail you have one model of a gun, But there are several LODS this have all the same shap only there is 1 1st person model that you hold in your hands and lets say 3 3rd person models and this 3 models are scaled so the 1st model you see ad a distanse up to 25Meters than LOD2 commes to work and that hase a lower Poly count than the LOD1 this can go on for ages well ofcourse you dont have to but lets say crytek uses 3LODS for the 3D person view and evry LOD is half the size in poly as the one befor that.
now the same thing hapens whit the land that is also scalled for distance in the mod and game devolper world we will use Screen fog most of the time to also bring back the View Range.

so do you have to create 3 seperate models for things to take advantage of LOD's ?? or does the engine do it automaticly?
I was also wondering about the size of map. So you can see 1 km (a very long distance) then the view distance fog kicks in?
and is it true that there is no real limit on map size??
would you need LOTS of RAM to have very big maps? or would big maps load into RAM only as needed??
Also, are buildings made using Sandbox tm. , or something like 3DStudio Max??

So, back to the original question, does anyone know how much the far cry engine licence costs? if there isnt really a cost what agreement would the two companys have to make?

well let me tell you this about a game engine i do know the cost of it is the Litech Engine used for NOLF2 it cost you 10.000 Per Person who uses the game devolpment tool and it cost you 25.000 on going gold. so it think you can think of a same price for the Cry-engine.
now back to the other question well for LOD meshes there is a trick you make 1 mesh and that is the 1st person model than you make the same model for 3d person and you do a smart culling down of polygons in 3D max here a example of what i mean

here you see a grenade that hase a high to low detail mesh i made this render some time ago to explain how to mod for BF42 but it always the same in evry game whit the lod so this mesh also works whit FC
now you that the last one is not even close to a nade thats cause it doesnt mather cause its so far away that you dont have to see al the detail.
now i know what there is more to know about FC but i cant tell you sorry m8 realy like to but i cant /i/smilies/16x16_smiley-sad.gif
but for the record THERE IS NO DISTANCE FOG IN FC for a REALY long range i have seen a pic of FC where the view just cuts of the map there is such picture on http://www.farcryhq.com

I had contacted there business office about licensing the cry engine but all they did was pass the e-mail through a few ppl and never replyed, all these guys had the same last name. hahaha
I think it would cost about a quarter mill. upfront for a small development team because they arn't interrested in a % of sales.

yeh you know why they all hade the same name cause they are brothers there are 3 brothers Faruk, Cevat and Avni Yerli.
and yeh THEY NEVER reply mails got the same problem but thats probly cause they are realy bussy /i/smilies/16x16_smiley-wink.gif
