Which version are you playing? I believe they vary somewhat.

Hmmm...never played that one. The menu ought to have a save option, though. Unless it save your game automatically? When you continue the game, what happens?

But when you return to the game, does it start you at the beginning again or where you left off?

How do access any game options? Or is that the problem -- since you can't figure that out you can't find the save? How do you quit? The three things I can think of to try are hitting the ESC key, putting the cursor up to the top of the screen to see if the FILE menu shows up, or putting the cursor at the bottom of the screen to see if any menu options show up. I only played the original version and realMyst, so I don't know off hand how to access the menus in the Masterpiece edition.

I'm playing the Masterpiece Edition too (on Windows XP) I can save my game but it isn't very elegant and it "appears" as if nothing happens when I save the game. I DON'T use the Alt-S suggestion that comes with the instructions for the game. That just boots me right out of it. I mouse over in the upper left of the screen where the menu appears. Under "File" you will see several choices including "Save" or "Save as". When I click on "Save" my screen freezes up for a while and then the game continues. I assume then that my game is saved but there's no indication that my game was saved.

Here's the second part of the story. When I return to Myst, I start the game and just as the opening graphics come on, I mouse over the upper left and look under File. I click on "Restore Game". A screen comes up giving me the choice of which game to restore. In my case, it's only the one--I don't keep multiple saves. I double click on the file or just open it and when the game returns, you will be returned to the world that you last saved on. You have to click on the book I think. You will not start at the point where you were last standing. It will always return you to the starting point for that world. However, all the changes you have made (switches clicked, puzzles solved etc.) should still be activated. Then you can keep playing even though you have to walk back to where you left off.

I hope this helps. Write back if what I wrote doesn't seem clear.

OK. Myst Masterpiece and Myst Classic are almost identical - certainly the game itself is the same and that includes saving.

When a game is saved, all of the data, including the positions of all switches, codes any doors you have unlocked, pathways you have opened, and also zip-mode data is stored. Also, the age you are currently in is stored. However your location is not.
The thing about Myst is that it isn't really about how far you've moved (you'll note it is very easy to get everywhere on Myst Island), but what you've unlocked. When you load, you simply move back to the start location of the age and keep your settings.

Unfortunately, this will severely limit you in two cases. In the Mechanical age (with the rotating fortress) if you have rotated the fortress, the rotation will not be saved. In the Selenitic age (rocket ship) your position in the maze is not saved. So these are the only positions this system causes a problem.

Hope that straightens things out.
