I'm not sure if anyone has ever asked this question before, and if they did, I can't remember what the answer was, but I have a simple question that has been bugging me for some time now and I wondered whether there is any solution.
When I first started playing URU back in November last year, before I joined the URU Live Prologue, I created my avatar and gave it my own name - only natural for a player who is only interacting with herself http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/images/smiley/16x16_smiley-very-happy.gif
Anyway, when I joined The Prologue I decided to call myself Cordelia (I hope no-one is too shocked that it's not my real name http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/images/smiley/blink.gif) and played all the way through The Prologue with that Avatar.
Obviously when The Prologue shut-down and I reverted to my original avatar, although all the progress stayed the same, she was no longer called Cordelia http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/images/smiley/cry.gif
Is there anyway that I can rename my avatar, without having to create a new one and start all over again? I don't really want to do that right now as I don't have the time to play URU from the beginning again, but I would like to be using an avatar called Cordelia http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/images/smiley/16x16_smiley-very-happy.gif
I am quite sure the answer is "no, you have to start from scratch with a new avatar" - but I thought I would ask anyway, just in case http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

There is a way to rename your avatar, but it's not quick or all that simple. Briefly, you disassemble the vault.dat file, use a hex editor to change the avatar name wherever it appears in the disassembled binary pieces, then reassemble vault.dat.
I use TechnoLogismiki's free Hackman Hex Editor, ver 8.01 (http://www.technologismiki.com/en/index-h.html), configured for left panel hex, right panel ASCII.
In detail:
1. Read the Clockwork Orange BBS topic Vault.dat (http://www.cobbs.ca/bbs/showthread.php?t=432&highlight=vault+block+splitter).
2. Read the Clockwork Orange BBS topic Vault block splitter (http://www.cobbs.ca/bbs/showthread.php?t=473&highlight=vault+block+splitter).
3. Download vaulttools.zip by clicking on the link in 'Attached Files vaulttools.zip (http://www.cobbs.ca/bbs/attachment.php?attachmentid=219) (14.0 KB, XXX views)' at the bottom of the page.
4. Unzip vaulttools.zip into a new folder, and copy your vault.dat from \sav\<hash>\current into the new folder. (<hash> is your avatar's name in hexadecimal code.)
5. Following trylon's instructions, disassemble the vault file using Splitvault from the command line. This gives you a subfolder containing the disassembled vault blocks.
6. Open a hex editor and search all of the blocks for your original avatar name, changing each instance to the new name. BE CAREFUL to maintain the position of the name in the block, as well as all punctuation, exactly as per original. For example, change "Cordelia's" to "Cordie's".
7. Reassemble the blocks using Joinvault from the command line.
8. Copy your existing \sav\<hash>\current to somewhere else on your hard disk as a backup.
9. Change the <hash> in \sav\<hash>\current to match your new avatar name. Check the hex editor for the new hex code.
10. Copy the reassembled vault.dat to \sav\<newhash>\current, overwriting the existing vault file.
11. Start PotS and verify that the avatar name has been correctly changed.

Thanks Heimdall, that sounds complicated http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/images/smiley/blink.gif
Maybe I'll get my husband to look at that as he's far more technical than I am http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/images/smiley/16x16_smiley-very-happy.gif

OR
if you have the python interactive console addition you have full power with your game.
<pre class="ip-ubbcode-code-pre">
from Plasma import *
#change your avatar name using
PtChangePlayerName("foo")
#where foo, is your new avatar name
</pre>

Almlys - got a link/URL for the console? Sounds like it's a whole lot simpler than what I've been doing!

Well, the easy click and install patch is currently only for, Uru To D'ni.
But reading the instructions at this page (http://www.cobbs.ca/bbs/showthread.php?t=774), you can manually enable it in any version.

Update:
"From Almlys Studios, here comes....
ChangeAvatar 1.0
ChangeAvatar is a small tool that will allow you to change
the avatar name, gender or type of your offline game avatar
in the games: "Uru: The Path of The Shell" and "Uru To D'ni".
Now you can copy avatars, rename avatars, change the gender of your
avatar, and play as a DRC character."
ChangeAvatar 1.0 is available here (http://www.cobbs.ca/bbs/showthread.php?t=933&page=1&pp=15).

Or you could get the shard owner to change your name using the CCR function in the Vault Server. This is accessed by the shard admin using a browser. They just type in your current name, search it up and then enter your new av name.
Done... Can't make it any easier than that. I have changed several peoples names this way. Takes about 10 seconds.

Yeah, that'd be easier. But it requires that a player be able to contact the shard Admin with a request, and that the shard Admin be willing to do the deed.
Which shard are you the Admin for?
