Hi all,

just wondering if this link is the correct driver for my video card, which is an NVIDIA GeForce FX5200 (128mb), in a Dell: 2.8 Mhz Pentium 4, 1 Gig RAM. I am running XP (home).

I am having stutter issues (not on-line, just playing at home) so I would appreciate some help.

however--the article is greek to me. I am a total noob when it comes to technical stuff. What I'd like to know is whether drivers are known to correct graphics issues.

And I don't know how to do a diagnosis. /i/smilies/16x16_smiley-surprised.gif

I am new to PCs and computers in general--my last PC had two 5 1/4" drives. I've had macs and no problems or games for six years. That's not a "diss"--I just don't know what I'm doing! /i/smilies/16x16_smiley-happy.gif

What are your settings for anti aliasing and anisotropic filtering in the video drivers menu? They have a huge influence on the performance.

Also, got to Dell's web site and go to...

and enter your service tag number. Make sure your computer's bios is up to date. I also have an 8200 and it uses the A09 bios. Don't automatically assume this is the correct bios for you, so check it out!
Also, make sure you have the best driver for your sound card as well.

Then do the following...

You will benefit from adjusting your hardware acceleration on sound. You might not be able to get away with sliding the sound acceleration all the way to the left (reducing). Should you encounter sound problems, accelerate the sound (to the right) in stepped increments until the sound returns to normal. If you have XP Home Edition you go...

Start>Control Panel>Sounds and Audio devices>under the volume tab you will see at the bottom "speaker settings" click the advanced option>click performance tab and slide hardware acceleration to the left. I would try standard acceleration first.

Another thing to do is stop print spooler. Start>Control Panel>Administrative Tools>Services and stop print spooler before you play game. Do not disable it or you won't be able to print later on. This will free up memory that dumps everything to the spooler like you're going to print it.

Also, download, update and run spybot (DO NOT DOWNLOAD THE W32Spybot VIRUS) Spybot found and removed over 250 spyware programs (on my system) that AD-Aware missed.

For XP users, the following site has some easy to apply tricks to improve performance..

These steps, combined together, will give you conservatively about 20% better performance in IL-2 Forgotten Battles over the less efficient configuration that XP is set up with in default setup.

It took six months before I got brave enough to update my bios. Took several attempts and first time I thought I`d killed my PC. Heart stopping situation!

Fortunately, Dell's site makes it easy for Dummies like me to update the bios. You put in your service tag number and then do a search for bios update and it gives you complete instructions. It is a simple download to a floppy disc that you install by going next>next>next! So easy, even I can do it!!! This is an important thing to do to any Dell computer made before May 2003 due to them mistakenly installing a beta bios version at the factory that is much less efficient.

I don't know if I can really help you, as I have neither a NVidia card nor an English language Windows version. I'll try, maybe the names are different on your computer:

Right click your desktop, chose Properties > Settings > Advanced > OpenGL or Direct3D, depending on what you chose in FB setup. Or simply look it up in the help file of your video card.


Another standard question if you have stutter issues: Do you use a firewall? Sometimes Zone Alarm causes problems. Always disable Zone Alarm before you run IL-2/Forgotten Battles. That's a lot easier than updating your BIOS! /i/smilies/16x16_smiley-happy.gif
