Are rank changes in the program based on an international standard formula that I can look up? For instance, is getting dumped off the server while winning the same as losing outright? (On a side note, how do you know if your opponent 'forced' a win other than a rank change?) Sorry if this is covered in the manual. I'm not good enough to be too concerned about it, just curious really.

I'm not sure how Chessmaster does there ratings, but you can find the USCF formula in the official 5th edition handbook. Math isn't my greatest subject, it's a little over my head...ok, a lot!
