I successfully installed Myst Masterpiece on Win98SE, but it will not launch properly.

I insert the CD, click on "Play" and CPU utilization goes up to 100% without ever getting any response from game.


Dell XPST-500
384MB RAM
DirectX 9.0B


I've tried disabling DirectDraw, and Norton AntiVirus. I've also searched the forums, but it looks like I'm the only one with this problem.

First, don't disable DirectDraw.

Second, if you are connected to the internet, try either disconnecting the session (dial-up) or unplugging the cable from the back of the computer (cable or DSL modem) before playing. Same thing applies if the computer is networked to another - temporarily disconnect it.

Finally, if that doesn't help, post a DXDiag report here (cut and paste into reply). If you're not familiar with how to do that:

<UL TYPE=SQUARE>1. Start &gt; Run &gt; type "dxdiag" in the box &gt; OK

2. You'll see a progress indicator in the lower left part of the page - allow it to finish before proceeding.

3. Run all the tests from the Display, Sound, and Music pages, and then click "Save all Information" at the bottom.

4. Open the saved text file, copy the entire text, and paste it into a reply box here.[/list]

It is an unusual problem you're having, yes, but not one that can't be resolved, I'm sure.

I enabled DirectDraw, and disconnected my LAN connection: Myst Masterpiece did not launch properly.

I ran DxDiag per your instructions: the results are at the end of this reply.

FYI: I installed Myst Masterpiece of on WinME system, and launch it with no trouble.

In your C:\WINDOWS folder should be a file named "Play32.exe". It's what Myst uses to play the Quicktime videos within it. Check the version by right-click &gt; Properties &gt; Version. It should be 4.0 or higher.

I see you have a SoundBlaster "Live" card installed yet the default audio device is "DirectSound". Either your sound card drivers aren't properly installed or are incompatable with something and Windows made the switch. Judging by the date on the audio drivers you have, they are probably outdated and it wouldn't hurt to check http://www.creative.com for more current ones.

I recommend setting the SB "Live" as the preferred audio device (Start &gt; Settings &gt; Control Panel &gt; Multimedia) first and trying to run Myst again before doing anything with the drivers.

Your not alone!!!! I have been trying to get myst to play for about 3 weeks now! Riven plays just fine,But the game im after is myst! My computer does the samething as yours (It just locks and is a bugger to get out of it)! if i find out what is causing it i will let everybody know!!
